Defending Champ Golovin Pulls from WTA Amelia Island

Posted on March 28, 2008

Still recovering from surgery to remove a cyst that was causing her back pain, France's Tatiana Golovin, the defending champion, has announced she is withdrawing from the Bausch and Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

"I am recovering well after my surgery last week," Golovin said. "I will be back on the practice court soon and look forward to returning to competitive play in the coming weeks. I am disappointed not to have the opportunity to defend my title in Amelia Island but I plan to return there again many more times where I have such great memories."

John Arrix, tournament director, commented "Tatiana is a bright star for women's tennis, however she has had her challenges staying healthy. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to having her back at Amelia in 2009."

Headlining the 2008 Bausch & Lomb Championships field will be No. 6 in the world, Anna Chakvetadze. Along with Chakvetadze, Venus Williams, Marion Bartoli, Elena Dementieva, Patty Schnyder, Nicole Vaidisova, Dinara Safina, Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva and Lindsay Davenport will all compete for their place as the 2008 Bausch & Lomb Championships titlist.

The 2008 Bausch & Lomb Championships returns to the oceanfront resort of Amelia Island Plantation on April 7-13, 2008.
The tournament is also still searching for a title sponsor for 2009, when Bausch and Lomb will step down after legislative changes that won't allow the company to entertain doctors at the event.
