Sharapova Added to Stellar WTA Tennis Amelia Island Field Posted on April 3, 2008
Maria Sharapova pulled this week from the Sony Ericsson Open, the biggest event of the year on the WTA Tour calendar outside of the Grand Slams, citing a shoulder injury.
The Russian superstar has obviously come across a miracle shoulder cure as, before the Miami event is even over, Sharapova will be back on court at the Bausch and Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, which starts this coming Monday.
"This is one of the biggest player announcements this tournament has made in its 28 year history," said Tournament Director John Arrix. "It is fantastic to deliver such a stellar player field. Having Maria make her inaugural appearance at Amelia Island is an absolute can't miss event."
The event now boasts four former No. 1-ranked players in Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Sharapova.
Sharapova has already captured titles this year at the Australian Open and Doha, but will be tested on the Amelia Island clay, her worst surface. Sharapova has won 18 career titles, none on clay.
Other players of note in the field include France's Marion Bartoli, Swiss Patty Schnyder, and Russians Dinara Safina, Anna Chakvetadze and Vera Zvonareva. Russian Nadia Petrova was forced to withdraw from the event with injury.
