Serena Williams Back to Form with WTA Miami Crown Posted on April 6, 2008
Serena Williams won the Sony Ericsson Open title on Saturday when opponent Jelena Jankovic fell sick in the third set, capturing the title 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third.
Jankovic received treatment from the trainer after suffering coughing fits, popping in her ears and nausea.
"I tried to come back. I tried to fight," Jankovic said. "I thought Serena really had trouble closing out the match. But she was very strong. When she's playing her best tennis, when she's serving well, it's just tough to match up against her. Even though I work hard physically, I can never in my life be as strong as her. She was the better one today, and she's the winner of this tournament."
It was the fourth Miami title for Williams, who en route to the championship match destroyed world No. 1 Justine Henin 6-2, 6-0 in a dominant display.
"I was definitely up and on my way to glory within an hour," Williams said. "But I started making a lot of mistakes and Jelena obviously started playing better too. Players who have nothing to lose are the most dangerous people in life on court. I thought I had like 15 match points; I'm glad to know it wasn't. It was weird."
Earlier in the tournament Jankovic came back from a 1-5 deficit in the third set, surviving five match points against Sofia Arvidsson.
"5-1 is a huge gap to catch, and it's a lot of games, but I wasn't scared at 5-1, because the girl needs to win four points, which is not easy," Jankovic said. "But I was scared when I was down 6-3 in the tie-break, because you only need one point and you can be lucky and hit some good shot and the match is over. It was a good thing for my confidence to get through that one, and reaching the final was just amazing. I just hope to continue playing like this."
