Sharapova Wins 1st Career Clay Title at WTA Amelia Island Posted on April 14, 2008
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova defeated unseeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 7-6(7), 6-3 Sunday in the anti-climactic final of the Bausch and Lomb Championships at Amelia Island.
"You obviously never know how you're going to feel and how things are going to turn out, so I feel pretty fortunate to win my first title on clay," Sharapova said. "I scrapped my way through those two early matches and played well in the final, and I'm leaving this tournament as the champion, which is exciting. For tennis this is a big event, so it means a lot to me to win here. It has been a really fun week. I really felt at home here."
Sharapova gained her first-ever final on clay when Lindsay Davenport pulled out of their much-anticipated semifinal after waking with an illness.
It was Sharapova's 19th career title, her third of 2008.
In the doubles final the American-Czech team of Mattek/Uhlirova defeated the Belarus-Russian pair of Azarenka/Vesnina 6-3, 6-1. |
