Serena Williams Loses 2nd Round, No. 1 Ranking at Stuttgart

Posted on October 1, 2008

It happens even to the pros. World No. 1 Serena Williams won the first set 6-0 against China's Li Na before collapsing to an 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 loss. Williams will now on Monday lose the No. 1 ranking she gained after the US Open to Serb Jelena Jankovic.

"I started making a lot of errors and I just gave it to her -- maybe I started doubting myself," Williams said.

The younger Williams sister said another shot at the top spot will come.

"Obviously I want to be No. 1, but I am not focusing on that," Williams said. "I am focusing on winning titles and that goes hand in hand (with No. 1)...I am not worried, it will come again if I win tournaments," she said. "I play to win titles and Grand Slams, although obviously the No. 1 is also on my mind."

It was the first match for Williams since the final at the US Open where she defeated Jankovic. Li had earlier this year beaten elder Williams sister Venus at the Beijing Olympics.
