Venus, Roddick Win Into Semifinals This Weekend

Posted on October 3, 2008

Florida's No. 6-seeded Venus Williams upset No. 3 Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-2 on Friday to advance into the semifinals at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. In the semis the elder Williams sister will face the winner of the match between (2) Jankovic and (7) Vera Zvonareva played tonight in Stuttgart.

Her little sister was not so fortunate this week.

In her first match, world No. 1 Serena Williams made a shocking exit after winning the first set 6-0, going down 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 to China's Li Na. As a result the younger Williams sister will lose the No. 1 ranking on Monday to Jelena Jankovic.

"I just started to make a lot of errors," Serena said. "I pretty much gave it to her, it was like I said, 'Here you go, you have a win today.'"

Andy Roddick is on an Asian roll.

After last week capturing the China Open title in Beijing, on Friday the top-ranked American moved into the semifinals at Japan Open in Tokyo with a 6-3, 6-4 win over unseeded Serb Viktor Troicki.

"It's the best I have hit the ball this week," said Roddick, who lost to Troicki earlier this year. "I did not feel very comfortable during my first match here but now I know I can get through the weekend if I keep playing like this."

On Saturday Roddick will square off against No. 9 seed Tomas Berdych, which the other semifinal features (4) Richard Gasquet vs. (5) Juan Martin del Potro.

No coverage of the men's Japan Open this weekend in the U.S., but the women's Stuttgart semis will be shown Saturday on Tennis Channel at 8am live and rerun at 8pm, and the Sunday final will be shown live at 7am and repeated at 8pm.
