U.S. Tennis Round-up: Venus Out, Ginepri Advances

Posted on October 7, 2008

Florida's Venus Williams has an unlikely nemesis in the form of Italy's Flavia Pennetta.

The Italian upended the reigning Wimbledon champ 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Tuesday in Moscow, the third straight victory for Pennetta over Williams after 2007 Bangkok and the 2008 French Open.

The younger Williams sister, Serena, withdrew from the event citing a knee injury. Venus' exit marks the departure of all Americans in the field.

On the men's side in Moscow, Robby Ginepri moved into the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Czech qualifier Jiri Vanek.

Bobby Reynolds was the lone U.S. representative in the men's Stockholm draw this week, but made a hasty 6-1, 6-1 exit against top-seeded David Nalbandian.

Most of the American men seem to be opting for a late start on the European indoor season as the draw in Vienna is totally void of U.S. participation. The men's Masters Series-Madrid begins next week, where Roger Federer has indicated he will likely sit out due to further recovery from a bout of mono early in the season.
