Sharapova to Return from Injury at Hong Kong Exhibition

Posted on December 1, 2008

Former No. 1 Maria Sharapova, who has dropped to No. 9 in the current WTA Tour Rankings, will test her injured shoulder on Jan. 7-10 at the JB Group Classic exhibition in Hong Kong.

Sharapova hasn't played a tournament since August 2008 after being diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff tendon. The Russian played much of the 2008 season with shoulder pain but managed to win the Australian Open, where she plans on defending her championship in January 2009.

In Hong Kong the exhibition will feature a team concept with four teams representing Europe, Russia, the Americas and Asia Pacific. Sharapova will represent Russia along with Vera Zvonareva and 19-year-old Alexandra Panova.

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic leads Team Europe with Hungary's Agnes Szavay and Portuguese teen Michelle Larcher De Brito. The U.S.'s Venus Williams, Argentina's Gisela Dulko and American up-and-comer Coco Vandeweghe will represent the Americas team.

China's Jie Zheng, India's Sania Mirza and Hong Kong's Zhang Ling make up the Asia Pacific team.

Each team meeting will feature two singles and a doubles match.
