AMELIA ISLAND -- The resort destination of Amelia Island lost its WTA Tour event this year, but not its passion for grassroots tennis. The Kraft Athletic Club held its official grand opening ribbon cutting on Jan. 11, featuring five new Har-Tru tennis courts to go with two existing hardcourts. Built by the non-profit Kraft Tennis Partners, the site overlooks the Amelia River amidst a large grove of live oaks. Meanwhile a large investment has been made in the Amelia Island Plantation, former home of the former Bausch & Lomb Championships, to expand its resort options.
DAYTONA BEACH -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Men's Tennis Coach Dave Paschal was named USTA/ITA Coach of the Year for men's NAIA tennis programs during the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coaches Convention in December 2008 at Naples. In December, USTA Florida announced the association's new board of directors for 2009-2010: serving as the new president is Donn Davis of Punta Gorda, joined by Dan Casey of Palm Beach Gardens (president-elect), Robert Hollis of Lakeland (vice president), Nancy Horowitz of Pembroke Pines (treasurer), Barbara Manzo of Ft. Myers (secretary), Bob Pfaender of St. Cloud (vice president) and Celia Rehm of Jacksonville (past-president). Rounding out the board of directors are directors-at-large Bruce Boiko of Coconut Grove, Chuck Collier of Mulberry, Judy Foster of Clearwater, Phil Girardi of St. Petersburg, Karen MacFarland of Tallahassee, Sandi Pardon of Miami and Barbara Wong of Melbourne. Serving as regional representatives are Susan Allshouse of Delray Beach, Terri Florio of Jacksonville and Adam Ross of Plantation.
