USTA Florida Region 1 News: QuickStart Workshop, Leagues Begin

The Tallahassee Tennis Association's (TTA) Professional Women's Tennis League wrapped-up in February, with an 81-player increase over the previous season, featuring players at levels 2.5-4.5. Players were invited to participate in determining which charity or community project any leftover league funds would be donated to. In past years, players voted to donate leftover funds to various children�s community programs such as First Serve and the Special Olympics, and to establish memorials for women tennis players who have passed away during the year.

In senior news, the first Tallahassee Men's 6.5 Senior Combo team advanced to Daytona Beach for sectional play in January, with the team comprised of Bruce Allaire, captain Tom Bahorski, Bill Rothas, Jim Everington, Steve Cutright, Paul Dirks, Dave Arciaga, Jay Tiedeberg, and Tim Clancy.

A Recreational QuickStart Tennis Workshop will be held at Winthrop Park in Tallahassee on Feb. 22, and the spring season of the QuickStart league will begin on March 7, call 219-2069 for more information.

In NICEVILLE out on the panhandle, the lone North Florida adult age division tournament will be held, the Bluewater Bay Adult Championships (Designated) at the Bluewater Bay Tennis Center on Feb. 20-23.

The University of West Florida, under coach Derrick Racine, held the University of West Florida Team Challenge Fundraiser in Pensacola in early February to raise money for the UWF women's team.
