USTA Florida Region 3 News: New Tennis Center, Programs for Children

Posted on February 25, 2009

By Nancy Morgan
Region 3 kicked off the New Year just like it ended 2008 -- with an abundance of activity. In this first edition of regional roundup, it seems fitting to highlight each of the five counties in Region 3.

Leading off with HERNANDO County special events, Louise and John Downey report that the city of Brooksville has donated land to the Nature Coast Tennis Foundation (NCTF) for a 10-court center. The NCTF also brought in $1,700 for youth  scholarships from its 4th annual Junior Invitational Singles Tournament. Nearly 40 players competed on the Delta Woods Park courts in Spring Hill in the two-day tournament. The foundation tripled its sponsors from seven last year to 22 this year, including gold-level sponsors Spring Hill Dental and Ace Performance Tennis.

The 18-month-old HILLSBOROUGH Community Tennis Association (HCTA) is beginning spring sign-ups for USTA Jr. Team Tennis this month. Area pros plan to include QuickStart tournaments in this year's schedule after receiving national QuickStart training from USTA national trainer Craig Jones. HCTA also supported a charity tournament that was held around the county for 130 league women and raised over $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
