Miami Tennis Women Beat Michigan, Rise to No. 6 Ranking

Posted on March 3, 2009

After a convincing 6-1 win over Michigan last week, the University of Miami women's tennis team advanced four spots to No. 6 in this week's ITA national team poll released Tuesday afternoon. Also released were the latest Campbell's/ITA Singles and Doubles rankings.

Miami (10-2) earns their highest ranking of the year with the leap from No. 10, where they had stood previously for the past two weeks. Prior to that, UM had been ranked No. 13 and 15, respectively.  The Hurricanes have gone 2-1 in their last three matches -- all against Top 25 teams, including mirror 6-1 wins in consecutive matches against No. 21 TCU and No. 18 Michigan.

In the Campbell's/ITA Singles rankings, sophomore Julia Cohen (15-4) moved up to No. 13 after sitting at No. 20 the past two weeks. Junior two-time All-American Laura Vallverdu (12-5) dropped from No. 34 down to No. 39 this week, while sophomore Bianca Eichkorn (25-5) vaulted from No. 51 up to No. 40. Fellow sophomore Michaela Kissell (21-6) dropped two spots to No. 63.

In doubles play, the team of Cohen and Vallverdu (9-3) earned their first ranking together on the year debuting at No. 15 after going 7-3 in their last 10 matches together, all at the No. 1 doubles spot for the Hurricanes.

The team of Kissell and Vallverdu, though not playing together in the spring, went to No. 32, while Kissell and Eichkorn moved to No. 37. Kissell and Eichkorn were previously No. 14 in the preseason polls.

Miami opens ACC play Thursday, March 5 as they host Boston College at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables at 10 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
