Americans were 5-1 on Day 1 in Miami, with T. Martin (d. Zabaleta), Gambill (d. Koubek in three), Dent (d. Krajicek), Ginepri (d. Arthurs), and Fish (d. Voinea after losing first set 0-6) advancing, and wildcard Alex Bogomolov, Jr., bounced by Radek Stepanek. Other notables advancing were Escude (d. Hrbaty) and H.T. Lee (d. Mathieu in three). Highlights on court Thursday are Philippoussis vs. Lopez, Kiefer vs. Chang, Spadea vs. (Q) Rochus, Enqvist vs. (Q) Llodra, Gasquet vs. (Q) Lisnard, and (Q) Bjorkman vs. 0-7 Andre Sa.

WTA REVIEW/PREVIEW -- TMS-Miami
Qualifiers had a field day Wednesday in Miami, posting a 3-1 record with Sanchez-Lorenzo beating fellow qualifier Pelletier, Bartoli beating wildcard American Baker, and Schaul ousting China's Shuai. Wildcards didn't fare as well, posting an 0-3 record with Russian Maria Sharapova (l. to Callens), American Jamea Jackson (l. to Cho), and American Ally Baker (l. to Bartoli) dismissed. Thursday's highlights include Safina vs. Kournikova, Kruger vs. Gullickson, and Muller vs. Weingartner.
