McEnroe Goes Ballistic at Blackrock Masters

"Mellow with age" and "John McEnroe" have never been synonymous terms, demonstrated effectively Wednesday at the Blackrock Masters seniors event where the 47-year-old American went ballistic after some bad linecalls en route to a 7-6(9), 4-6, 10-7 opening-round win over Swede Anders Jarryd.

McEnroe was warned for firing a ball at the Royal Albert Hall's organ pipes, berating the chair umpire and linespeople, and almost (almost the key word on the senior tour, where McEnroe runs rampant) given a point penalty when he smashed a racquet on the court, bouncing it up into the crowd.

"If anything, they woke me up," McEnroe said of his meltdowns. "I got more into it and played better. I was trying to just play tennis, but I did get angry with some of the line calls and then the crowd fed off that, and we both started playing better. It got a little bit wacky out there, but it was still fun."

Both players received standing ovations after the prolonged battle.

"The crowd reaction was really nice," Jarryd said. "It was a really competitive match and we both really wanted to win. I feel pretty exhausted now. I know how he reacts out there sometimes and I had to stay pretty cool. It was still a lot of fun."

Jarryd's loss means McEnroe and group member Cedric Pioline will both advance to Friday's quarterfinals.

Marcelo Rios also won his debut match, pounding Jeremy Bates 6-2, 6-1 and sending a warning to his opponents.

"I didn't even hit the ball that well tonight, but I'm on fire this week and I'm going to do some damage," Rios said.

Sergi Bruguera beat Thomas Muster 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, and defending champ Paul Haarhuis defeated Carl-Uwe Steeb 3-6, 6-2, 10-2.

On court Thursday are McEnroe vs. Pioline, Muster vs. Leconte, Rios vs. Cash, and Ivanisevic vs. Haarhuis.

Yes, you heard me correctly. I had more exhilarating fun coming back this summer than I had had before. It was almost comparable to when I was first coming up when I was seventeen and had everything to prove. I don't think I will ever take winning for granted again. It was a learning experience that I won't forget anytime soon. I also want to thank all of you fans for sticking by me. It was tough to keep up a strong exterior with a lot of negativity and questions swirling what felt like all the time."...From Austin360.com on the new Pretenders box set: "But most revealing are the song snapshots sprinkled throughout. Hynde reveals tennis bad boy John McEnroe to be the inspiration for "Don't Get Me Wrong"...Swede Joachim Johansson has split with coach Yerko Muller...Maria Sharapova has posted on her personal website that she hates liver meat...From the Idaho Statesman: "In retirement, Sampras found lots of things he enjoys -- golf, poker, quality time with his two young sons -- but nothing that gives him the same satisfaction as a day of hard work. "Every man needs to work," Sampras told the Idaho Statesman during a telephone interview last week. "I'm not much of a business coat-and-tie guy, not much of a computer-and-phone guy. I'm an athlete." The 35-year-old Sampras, who holds the record for most Grand Slam titles with 14, will return to the court Friday at Qwest Arena in Downtown Boise as the headliner of the St. Luke's-Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Services (SLIERS) Tennis Shootout. Sampras faces American pro Robby Ginepri in the second of three exhibitions between the two this year. Since his retirement after the 2002 U.S. Open, Sampras has played very few public, competitive events."...From the AP on the Williams' family lie-o-thon in court: "Attorneys for a pair of promoters suing tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams and their father over a tennis match accused the three of perjury. In a motion filed Tuesday in Palm Beach County Circuit Court, the attorneys accuse the sisters of 'a repeated pattern of deception and falsehood.' Promoters Carol Clarke and Keith Rhodes, owners of a company called CCKR, allege that the sisters' father, Richard Williams, signed a contract on their behalf committing his daughters to play in a 2001 'Battle of the Sexes' match. The promoters claim they lost millions of dollars after the sisters reneged on the deal. Despite tax returns that show payments to Richard Williams for management fees, Venus and Serena Williams have both testified that their father has never been their manager and had no authority to commit them to a deal. Attorneys for the sisters and their father claim the payments were mischaracterized for tax-deduction purposes and that Richard Williams was paid merely for coaching services."
