Haarhuis Beats Ivanisevic for 2nd Straight Senior Masters

Dutchman Paul Haarhuis, who didn't win a single title this year on the senior tour, won his second consecutive year-ending Blackrock Masters title Sunday in London with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-7 win over Goran Ivanisevic.

The first set went to a tiebreak, where Ivanisevic tried a crowd-pleasing between-the-legs play when he had plenty of time to go with a more conservative selection.

"It's me, an idiot," Ivanisevic said. "It just comes into my mind that I have to do it and usually it works -- but not today."

Ivanisevic had won their three previous meetings in third-set tiebreaks, including one match in the round robin, and led 5-2 in the breaker before Haarhuis took charge.

"I'm thrilled to be back here and winning it again," Haarhuis said. "I feel a bit guilty for taking out all the big stars, but it's a competitive tour and we want to win. I've lost some times to Goran and to Rios, but maybe I will become a bigger star if I win this BlackRock Masters a few more times."

Ivanisevic said nerves played a part, including some key double faults.

"I was serving well most of the time but people don't realize that it is not easy," Ivanisevic said. "It was the final -- sometimes you get a little nervous, even now. But it's ok. I had a lot of fun this week."

Haarhuis only qualified for the year-end finale to the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions because Richard Krajicek withdrew with a knee injury.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Mary Pierce
is scheduled for knee surgery today, according to Tennis.com...From Ron Cioffi of TennisReporters.net: "The pistol is cocked and it surely is loaded. "Pistol" Pete Sampras is firing like a 24-year-old. After defeating Robby Ginepri in back-to-back exhibitions, the all-time Grand Slam record holder told the crowd, "I still have a few tools in the shed." Sampras' return to tennis -- a few exhibitions and sub-par play in the '06 World TeamTennis season -- hit a high point this weekend. After thumping Ginepri in straight sets in Boise, Idaho on Friday, Sampras flew into Atlanta for a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory. The 35-year-old was giving away 11 years and hometown advantage to Ginepri, who lives Kennesaw, a suburb in the sprawling Atlanta metro area. "I don't care if you're the hometown boy," he shouted to Ginepri after easily holding his first service game. What bodes well for American tennis fans is Sampras' comments that he considering joining Jim Courier's Outback Championship Series tour next year. The Sun-Sentinel reported Courier said his friend, Sampras, is "very interested in playing, and he seems eager to be on that path." "Jim's talked to me and I am considering it. Nothing's planned right now," Sampras said in an Atlanta press conference. "You never know," he added. "Who would have thought Jimmy Connors would be coaching right now?"...Jelena Dokic after quitting the Munich tennis camp of former coach Niki Pilic to get back with former coach Borna Bikic, father of her boyfriend: "I'm facing hard times and will have to be terribly strong."...From the AP's Howard Fendrich: "The U.S. Tennis Association is making a multimillion-dollar investment in The Tennis Channel in hopes of promoting the sport, The Associated Press learned Sunday. The deal, to be announced formally Monday, will give the USTA -- which runs the U.S. Open and other events -- a say in the cable network's future and could eventually lead to other deals between the two. Neither the USTA nor The Tennis Channel would say exactly how much is being invested. Two people familiar with the deal said it involves less than $10 million, describing the financial terms to the AP on condition of anonymity because they're not being announced publicly."...From Sportinglife: "Gustavo Kuerten is considering participating at next year's Australian Open to once again challenge himself against the world's best. However, the three-time French Open champion is currently ranked 1,079th in the world, and would need a wildcard in order to compete in Melbourne. "I have two options to start the new year," said Kuerten. "I can fly to Australia or warm up to play the Sao Paulo Open and some other Challengers we have here (in South America). Now, it's time to schedule to compete more and more." The 30-year-old returned to action last month after nine months on the sidelines, and reckons a grand slam event might be just what he needs to step up his comeback. "If I have the opportunity to go to Australia and be with the other guys, train along with higher standard players, it could be a good experience and it may motivate me to play my best tennis."
