Loit Open Acapulco win a Win; Top Seed Bartoli in Action TodayPosted on February 27, 2007
It was a busy day on Monday at the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presented by HSBC, one of the handful of combined events attended by both the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars. On the women's end of things, the first round began with four matches, with Emilie Loit the most notable name to win.
Although she just missed the seedings, Loit will likely be one of the biggest threats at the $180,000, Tier III event, which is held on the red clay courts of the Fairmont Acapulco Princess Hotel. The Frenchwoman has a stellar record here, reaching the quarters or better in all five prior appearances including semifinal finishes in 2003 and a year ago. She improved to 16-5 lifetime with a 63 61 first round win Monday against Mexico's Daniela Muńoz Gallegos.
In other opening round matches, Estonian Kaia Kanepi downed Conchita Martínez Granados, 62 62; Spain's Laura Pous Tio beat Czech Hana Sromova, 61 75; while at night, German Julia Schruff rallied to beat Israel's Tzipora Obziler, 57 62 62.
All eight seeds - No.1 Marion Bartoli, No.2 Tathiana Garbin, No.3 Martina Müller, No.4 Severine Brémond, No.5 Flavia Pennetta, No.6 Gisela Dulko, No.7 Sybille Bammer and No.8 Nicole Pratt - will play their first round matches on Tuesday. (WTA)
