Philippoussis, Dokic Forced to Play Aussie Open Wildcard Tourney

Former Top 10 players Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic, trying to regain their former glory after injuries and off-court drama, won their first-round matches this week in the Australian Open play-off tournament at Melbourne Park where they are attempting to earn wildcards into the January Australian Open.

The 31-year-old Philippoussis, who hasn't played an ATP event since January 2007, opened with a win over reigning Australian Open junior champ Brydan Klein 6-3, 7-5.

The 24-year-old Dokic was a 7-6(3) 6-0 winner over 17-year-old Aussie Alenka Hubacek.

The playoff tournament is a round-robin event guaranteeing players three matches in three days.
