Henin, Davenport Lead Miami Sweet 16 Today

Posted on March 31, 2008

It's a huge day for the women at the Sony Ericsson Tier I WTA event in Miami with all round of 16 matches scheduled for play.

Five of the Top 8 seeds are still on course to reach their projected quarterfinal berths; three Top 8 seeds fell in the third round Sunday, namely No.2 seed Ana Ivanovic (who fell to No.32 seed Lindsay Davenport), No.5 seed Anna Chakvetadze (who fell to wildcard Sabine Lisicki) and No.7 seed Daniela Hantuchova (who fell to Ai Sugiyama). Top seed Justine Henin avoided upset and is in action today against Elena Vesnina.

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Shahar Peer play in this round here for the second year in a row; last year, the Israeli upset Kuznetsova in three sets en route to the semifinals, but the Russian has won both their meetings since then.

Lindsay Davenport has now had two Top 10 wins since returning to the Tour last fall; she beat then-No.3 Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals of her comeback event in Bali and current No.2 Ana Ivanovic in the third round here.

Sabine Lisicki is now 2-0 against Top 20 players after beating the No.6-ranked Chakvetadze in the third round; in her only previous encounter against one of the Top 20, she beat then-No.16 Dinara Safina at the Australian Open. (WTA)
