Four Americans Into 2nd Rd at WTA Charleston; Tuesday Schedule

Vania King led four unseeded Americans into the second round on Monday at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

King upset No. 14 seed Olga Govortsova 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-3 in the only seeded upset of the day.

Other unseeded American winners were Julie Ditty, Varvara Lepchenko, and qualifier Melanie Oudin.

The first three seeds to take the courts were all winners, with No. 10 seed Peng Shuai topping wildcard Anastasia Pivovarova 6-0, 6-2; No. 11 seed Alona Bondarenko beating Anne Kremer 6-4, 6-0; and No. 13 seed Virginie Razzano beating American wildcard Mallory Cecil 6-1, 6-2.

Seeds scheduled for Tuesday in Charleston include American [12] Mattek-Sands vs. Duque Marino, [3] Zvonareva vs. de Los Rios, [6] Bartoli vs. [Q] Sevastova, Mayr vs. [4] Petrova, [1] Dementieva vs. Ditty, [Q] Perry vs. [15] Zahlavova Strycova, [Q] Spears vs. [9] Wozniak, and [16] Lisicki vs. [Q] Pelletier.

Defending champion Serena Williams is sitting out the event this year with a thigh injury.
