Karatancheva Busted!

by Sean Randall

Sesil seems to like kids. Hmmm...One thing is for sure, budding Bulgarian prodigy Sesil Karatacheva can’t be feeling all fine and dandy right now. According to the French sport rag L’Equipe, the teen reportedly failed a drug test last spring at the French Open.

Karatacheva, aka “The Mouth”, made a stunning run to the quarterfinals at the French where she lost to Elena Likhovtseva in three sets. Well, now we may know why. The paper alleges that following the loss The Mouth was tested which turned up positive for a banned substance.

L’Equipe went on to say that The Mouth appeared before a drug panel last week in London where she denied the accusation and argued that the nandro was excessive due to that fact she was pregnant during the event - she says later she had a miscarriage.

Karancheva added that she was “shocked” by the findings.

Yeah, I am shocked too! Pregnant during the French Open? At 15 years of age. This kid has more than just drug problems to worry about. Has anybody told her about “contraceptives”?

At last check, 15-year-old girls shouldn’t be taking nandro and being pregnant during Grand Slam events. That shouldn’t happen.

Of course we all remember The Mouth for coming out a few years back as a 14-year-old and basically saying that she’d kick everyone’s ass on the Tour so who knows what really happened and if in fact she ever was pregnant. Unfortunately for The Mouth, if this allegation turns true - and more often than not where there’s smoke there’s fire - we’ll remember her for something other than her cocky attitude and fiesty on court play.

A decision from the ITF in this matter is expected in January, in this latest drug scandal which comes on the heels of French runner-up Mariano Puerta’s allegation that he too tested positive at Roland Garros last May. A ruling in the Puerta case may come by year-end.
