Venus Williams, Davenport on Collision Course at WTA Memphis

by Richard Vach

Americans Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport are the drawing cards next week at the mouthful ‘The Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and The Cellular South Cup’ in Memphis, where the two former No. 1s are likely to meet in the semifinals.

The pair have faced each other 27 times on tour, with Davenport edging 14 wins over 13 losses to Williams.

Also seeded are Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin, Israel’s Shahar Peer, Belarus’ Olga Govortsova, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, Swede Sofia Arvidsson, and American Laura Granville.

Lower-ranked Americans will have a chance to shine in Memphis, with Bethanie Mattek facing the No. 2-seeded Golovin, Mashona Washington starting against the No. 5-seeded Govortsova, and Ahsha Rolle debuting against the No. 3-seeded Peer.

Other Americans in the field are wildcard Amber Liu, Vania King and Lilia Osterloh.

Wildcards went to Liu, Portugal’s Michelle Larcherde Brito and German Julia Goerges.

In last year’s final Venus ran through Peer 6-1, 6-1 for the championship.

Alaine Says:

Speaking of lesser ranked American women, has anyone heard from Marissa Irvin lately? Is she still in the game?

rogers twin sister Says:

How can you call Venus Williams “lesser-ranked????” Don’t you know that she’s in the top 10?

Tom Kosinski Says:

Actually Mr. Vach, the full name of the tournament is:

“The Sony Ericsson Women’s Tennis Association Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and The Cellular South Cup” or for short “The Sony Ericsson WTA Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and The Cellular South Cup”.

Quite a mouthfull considering its only a Tier III tournament. I wonder how much each sponsor put up for the prize.

rogers twin sister Says:

Venus will soon be a “lesser-ranked” player. She was knocked out in the first round by an relatively unknown player.
