Wildcard Kim Clijsters, playing in her first US Open since winning the title in 2005, enters the final having won 13- straight matches at the US Open; and 19 of her last 20 US Open matches, with her only loss in that stretch coming in the 2003 final against Henin.

Clijsters advances to the final as an unseeded player. The last unseeded player to reach the final of a Grand Slam was S.Williams at the 2007 Australian Open (d. Sharapova). The last unseeded player to reach the final at the US Open was V.Williams in 1997 (l. to Hingis). Before Clijsters, the most recent wildcard to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam was Zheng Jie (2008 Wimbledon).

Clijsters is bidding for her second career Grand Slam singles title (2005 US Open). She is also a four-time Grand Slam runner-up.

Until this week, Caroline Wozniacki was the highest-ranked player on Tour yet to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal (now world No.18 Virginie Razzano holds that distinction).

Wozniacki is the first Dane, man or woman, to reach the finals of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. In the pre-Open Era, Kurt Nielsen from Denmark was a two-time runner-up in the Wimbledon men’s singles in 1953 and 1955. Among Scandinavian women, Norway’s Molla Bjurstedt won the US Open women’s title in 1915-1918; following marriage she went on to win further titles representing the USA as Molla Mallory.

Wozniacki has won the most matches on Tour so far this season (62), followed by Dinara Safina (54) and Elena Dementieva (51).

Wozniacki has advanced to the final conceding only one set, while Clijsters has lost two.

Clijsters is gunning to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam singles title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who went all the way to the 1980 Wimbledon title.

No player ranked outside the Top 10 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings has ever won the US Open. The lowest ranked player ever to win the US Open (since 1976) has been No.9 Svetlana Kuznetsova (2004). Besides Kuznetsova, only one other player ranked outside the Top 5 has ever won the US Open (1999, No.7 S.Williams).

Clijsters is one of only six players to have defeated both Williams sisters at the same tournament. Following her win over S.Williams in the semifinals, and V. Williams in the 4r, she is now the only player to have done this twice.

Reaching the semifinals saw Clijsters’ career prize money exceed $15 million, winning the title would push her past $16 million.

Wozniacki has passed $2 million in career earnings by reaching the final.

Wozniacki is aiming to become the 37th woman in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles title, but only the eighth to win their first at the US Open.

Belgium is represented in the women’s singles final of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2007 US Open, when Henin won the title.

Clijsters enters the final with a 101-25 (.802) record at Grand Slams. She is 93-9 (.911) when winning the first set of a Grand Slam singles match (NOTE: win-loss records are reflective of main draw matches only). (WTA)

59 Comments for Clijsters, Wozniacki Meet for US Open Title

Mary Says:

Finally, my own thread to talk about the important things in tennis:
Why doesn’t Mary Jo get bangs in order to cover up that five head of hers?

David Archuletta?! Why?

Mary Says:

Marines are hot. I would like to see more of them.

I know Archultetta does not have much of a career. Is that why has a job as a ball boy?

Mary Says:

Pam Shriver is a goddess. Pam, Tim Gunn, god of Project Runway, Diane Von Furstenbergare my three of my favorite people. They should start a cult. I would join.

Woz should hire Gunn and DVF to design for her.

Mary Says:

*are three of my favorite people.

Kimmi Says:

Good to see, they both look so relax. How can Woz look that relax playing her 1st GS final ?

but what a story for Kim, she try to win a GS so much and manage to get only 1 and now just coming back from a layoff she gets another chance…go Kim

i am it Says:

kim will win this match in straight set. grand slam title !
what a story !

blah Says:

Wozniacki looks tight and Kim can actually hold serve unlike 95% of the women on tour. They just showed Wozniacki’s path to here. Only one she played was Kuz and Oudin if you want to count her. She already got broken. WTA is going to look so bad.

Kimo Says:

Caroline is just punchdrunk. She’ll realize on what stage she’s playing in a few games.

Kim’s experience already showing.

i am it Says:

kim breaks woz. kim has been running woz from corner to corner. kim can hit on the run. woz is not comfortable doing that. kim’s shots are deeper than woz’s.

i am it Says:

and kim has bigger serve than woz.

i am it Says:

woz could not convert any of the three break chances. she is playing high bounce. that’s not how you can win a match.

i am it Says:

woz is a home-taught player as opposed to tennis academy trained. that she’s made this far is commendable.

Kimmi Says:

Woz can actually win this, she is forcing Kim to make erros…returning every ball….

Kimo Says:

Caroline looks composed…way to go!!!

i am it Says:

i may have made a mistake in writing off woz early.
she’s taken a break and the lead to go 4-2 if he holds here.

blah Says:

Just don’t let this turn into another typical ugly and unwatchable women’s match where they break more than they hold…

i am it Says:

woz just cannot hold like many of her fellow women players.

i am it Says:

woz holds to lead 4-2. she’s not going away easily. she’s gonna give a good fight.

i am it Says:

kim is tight and making a lot of errors.

i am it Says:

kim leads in unforced errors 13-7. almost by double.

jane Says:

Woz is a good fighter, as she showed against Kuz and Oudin; Kim may still be getting a handle on her game. Have Woz and Kim met before? Nice match so far, quiet, full of variety. Loving it! Don’t care who wins although slightly favor Kim as sentimental fave.

i am it Says:

kim and woz played once long ago when woz was 16-17. they were doubles partner once back then.

i am it Says:

what a point ! and a great smile from woz !

i am it Says:

the way kim can hit down the line consistently has impressed me.
woz gets broken with a double fault after all that hard work.

jane Says:

So many backhand errors from Kim, as commentators have noted.

Kimo Says:

Woz doesn’t look fazed at all. I’m impressed.

Go Woz!!

blah Says:

woo another break…

i am it Says:

woz takes the break that cat and mouse at the net.

i am it Says:

break that s/b break after that

jane Says:

Tremendous defense from Woz though; she gets her opponent on the backfoot with a lob and then comes in and finishes it at the net. She had Kim running all round. Woz is mentally tough, as is Kim. How refreshing. Even though there have been breaks, the rallies and such have been fun.

Kimo Says:

I was wrong before. The tennis is top notch.

i am it Says:

that was a long rally. good one.

jane Says:

Great winner from Kim there too end that 22 shot rally. This is fab ladies’ tennis, even if their serves could be stronger.

i am it Says:

why cannot woz hold?

i am it Says:

that’s really sad. i wanted woz to win the 1st set.

jane Says:

5 all – attacking and defending match up. Kinda classic stuff in that way. Great movement from both as well.

i am it Says:

can woz hold and force the tie break? not sure.

i am it Says:

1st set goes to kim.

Kimmi Says:

Yes Kim..big fight and she got the 1st set. Go Go Go..

jane Says:

Woz lost some key chances there, but Kim showed her champion’s mettle and experience.

i am it Says:

in the 3rd game that was beautiful backhand down the line from woz. 2 in a row. still she could not break.

Giner Says:

This has been a very high quality match, surprisingly. Wozniacki has shown no nerves, looks extremely calm and composed for someone in her first slam final. Both girls have been hitting quite hard and the rallies have been long and spectacular. I wasn’t expecting much quality from this but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

CWoz is a very good player, and she should have won the first set. She’s really taken it to Kim who probably didn’t expect this much resistance. I don’t expect her to be in too many more slam finals but she is one to watch.

If every WTA match was this good, I’d be watching it again.

jane Says:

Woz’s inexperience is showing more as the match wears on; two weak approaches to net, only to be passed twice by Kim’s sure passing shots. Those splits by Kim still make my jaw drop. LOL

i am it Says:

kim breaks and is on the way to hoist the trophy. as i initially predicted it will be straight win for kim.

i am it Says:

i agree this has been a high quality wta match.

i am it Says:

kim is just one game away from holding up the trophy.

blah Says:

The rallies have picked up and it’s better than a typical wta match. Like I said before, Wozniacki is a good promising young player and I think she’ll continue to rise in the rankings, but Kim is serving for it now (and down 0-30 already)

blah Says:

Championship point- Kim Clijsters wins the USO. Congrats!

junaid Says:

kim won the US open … Great Won

Kimmi Says:

WOWOOWOWOWOO What a story.. Congrants Kim

jane Says:

Nice job by Kim; kudos to Woz for making it a close match and not a rout. :)

i am it Says:

congrats to kim. she won her 2nd slam. she played a great tournament. what a comeback story !
woz showed some heart and played some beautiful tennis. runner-up is nothing to regret about.

Andrew Miller Says:

Wow. Kim Clijsters won the Open! I agree with what Virginia Wade said, “You have a sense that Kim Clijsters didnt just come back to play, but because she had some unfinished business.”

ShayHay Says:

Congrats Kim on the second USO Trophy!

The match lastd a little longer than I expected, but the outcome was the same. Kim win’s easily. I applaud her for her comeback. I always liked Clijsters, unlike the other Belgian.

Von Says:

Wonderful, my girl Kim won the USO again! I stated a few weeks ago that it would make a great headline if Kim were to win the USO, well, I guess it will make one now. Congrats Kim, you’re da bomb!!!!

i am it Says:

now clijsters won and fed will probably win tomorrow. if that happens, this US Open will be for one mother and father.

ShayHay Says:

For this tournament not be a total waste for me….Del Po HAS TO WIN!!!

VAMOS DEL PO!!!

i am it Says:

zeta is really cute. they did a smart thing by bringing her to the ceremony and letting her experience it. she seems to enjoying the moment playing with her mom there a bit. she will have a lot of pictures to look when she grows up.

i am it Says:

i think zeta made the ceremony so special for mom as well as the viewers. one happy kid and one happy family.
