Ernests Gulbis: “I Don’t Know if Being Recognized Helps Me at All” [Video]
by Tom Gainey

Here’s a fun interview the ATP conducted with Ernests Gulbis this week in Los Angeles.

Gulbis answers such hard-hitting questions like when he last bought tennis balls, when he last missed a flight and when he last went to concert.

Watch the video if you want those questions answered in earnest (?) from Ernests himself.

Gulbis is having his best week of the season in Los Angeles at the Farmers Classic. After upsetting Juan Martin Del Potro last night 62, 64, Gulbis plays American Alex Bogomolov tonight in the semifinals.

The 22-year-old from Latvia is currently ranked at 84. He has only once reach a tournament final, winning last year in Delray Beach.

For more insight on Ernests, James LaRosa of the Tennis Channel had a revealing Q&A here.

And if you haven’t seen it, here’s a bonus clip of Gulbis acting when he was a child! Click here to see it.

grendel Says:

Gulbis is one of those players who teases you every time he picks up a tennis racket. When he scores an upset – as someone with his talent is bound to do from time to time – gasps and whispers ricochet among the ever hopeful.

An element of unpredictability adds to the gaiety of nations, in tennis no less than other activities – no doubt about that. The main trouble with Gulbis, however, is that he is not quite unpredictable enough. This flattering only to deceive business has become a routine in itself.

jane Says:

Wooot! Ernests is in a final! Way to go Gulbis. :) I hope he wins it all, but probably Fish will win.

contador Says:

party muppet is on my blacklist!

until he shows consistency and enthusiasm for tennis, that is. it’s easy to get off a blacklist but i completely doubt him.

grendel Says:

well, contador, Gulbis is still around, having beaten the fella wot did for Dimitrov – one of the famous alex Bogwots. Will have to knuckle down against Fish, however – a strong opponent.
