While the London ATP Finals field is far from finalized, the year-ender on the women’s tour is set. Last night Li Na grabbed the eighth and final berth in the upcoming WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
The event begins in just over two weeks on October 23 and final eight hail from eight different countries: Victoria Azarenka (Belarus), Maria Sharapova (Russia), Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland), Serena Williams (United States), Angelique Kerber (Germany), Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic), Sara Errani (Italy) and Li Na (China).
Winner of the last two majors, Serena Williams will be the favorite if she in fact plays – she hasn’t hit a ball since winning the US Open. Kerber is also fighting a foot injury. If someone does drop out Sam Stosur is the next player in.
As far as the No. 1 ranking goes, it looks like current top girl Azarenka will fight it out with Sharapova, with the winner of this weekend’s Beijing event in the driver’s seat heading into the final few weeks.
