Roger Federer announced today on Facebook that he was withdrawn from the Madrid Masters 1000 to be with his family. Federer’s wife, Mirka, is in her eighth month of pregnancy and due to give birth to the couple’s third child any day now at a hospital in Zurich.

“I’ve decided to withdraw from Madrid to be with my wife Mirka during these next few exciting weeks for our family,” Federer posted earlier today. “I apologize to my fans and hope to be back in Madrid next year. I’ll be training near my home, and am excited to rejoin the Tour soon!”

Federer, a 3-time champion of the tournament, made it known that he would skip events to be with his family for the birth of the baby.

He joins fellow past winner Novak Djokovic, who pulled out yesterday due to continued issues with his ailing right wrist, as late withdrawals from Spain’s biggest event.

Depending on the new born’s arrival, Federer may or may not be in Rome next week. Though with the timing, it hints he will play at the French Open in three weeks.

The couple welcomed their first children, twin girls, in July 2009. They announced a third child was on the way last December.

Perfect fan Says:

Bit sad but i’m really hopeful now that fed will play RG. I was worried for that.

Its rly a nice gesture by roger opting to stay with mirka, than playing in one of his fav tourney. I hope the couple get blessed with a healthy n beautiful child.

go roger !! :)

Giles Says:

Lol. “gesture”?

RZ Says:

Perfect Fan, I agree that the good news here may be that Fed will be back for RG. At least it seems assured that he’ll be able to play the grass court tournaments. He should have a top 4 seeding for Wimbledon as the 2012 champ and Olympics runner up and 2013 Halle champ. Hopefully skipping Rome (should that happen) won’t affect his RG top 4 seeding as those finalist points will drop off.

skeezer Says:

“gesture”.
Yes, gesture. Fed could have played anyway. He is playing hot right now, off to one of his better playing in years. Instead, he is showing his loving resolve to his family.

Hey giles,

Surprised you have posted a link to the latest news from Mallorca.

skeezer Says:

^haven’t

Giles Says:

Lol skeezer. Maybe you would prefer to play tennis while your wife is heavy with child and needs the support of her husband at this time. But but, we are talking about “a class act” here according to your hash tag. So, need I say more?
No news from Mallorca but plenty from Madrid.

Giles Says:

Tennis X. You should open a thread “When will Mirka give birth?”

Giles Says:

That’s an interesting link. At least they want to keep Mallorca decent unlike say the beaches in the USA for example. It’s a good thing.

Jack Lewis Says:

I’m sure bikinis will still be allowed on the beach.
What would a decent beach be like anyway?

Perfect fan Says:

@ RZ, TBH if roger happens to play RG this year….I won’t mind him getting seeded outside top 10 or 20 even. Its just so tough for me as a fan to imagine watching a GS without roger….it will be like having a deck of cards without the king of heart ;)

@ Skeeze, thank u

@ Giles, are u p!ssed off bcoz top guys r withdrawing from Madrid, leaving rafa with no real competition. Or u r worried that rafa may falter again. Dnt worry man, rafa gonna do it for sure this time. playing at home may be adding some pressure, but he handles pressure well. rooting for the rafa-wawa rematch. any guesses, who will win that (if it turns out that way)?? ;)

Frankie Says:

No bikinis but speedos…LOL!

Ben Pronin Says:

@Giles, yes a poll should be put up with the classic options: Tomorrow, Next Week, I don’t know, I don’t care. LMAO.

andrea Says:

wow….the names are falling out of madrid. just when i was getting pumped for this week. with novak and roger out there is a great opening for someone.

i guess after having to endure a long 2009 wimbledon final on a hot day, loaded down with two twins in her belly, mirka said ‘this time baby, you can stay at home’.

Roger Federer: Doubles specialist. (Okay, so I stole that one from Twitter)

Okiegal Says:

His little daughters are so adorable……can’t wait to see the boys! Roger will be a busy boy…..twins are a handful, but they have already been there and done that! Congrats to the Federer family!

Honfleuraise Says:

This is my first visit. Trying out for size.
