Can Serena Williams shake off her French Open disappointment? Does Venus Williams have one more Wimbledon run in her? Is Victoria Azarenka really back? Is it really a bad thing to break up with RedFoo? Is the Woz over her break-up with Rory? Are the American break-out grasscourt winners ready to bring the confidence to the All England Club? Can a Brit woman make it to the first weekend? Can a Brit woman make it out of the first round?
All these questions and more will start to be answered on Monday when play kicks off at Wimbledon, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the four sections of the draw and who will be going deep into week #2:
Top 3 seeds: (1) Serena Williams, (5) Maria Sharapova, (9) Angie Kerber
Floaters: (13) Eugenie Bouchard, Daniela Hantuchova, Tamira Paszek, Alison Riske
Watch For: Openers (13) Bouchard vs. the veteran Hantuchova, (24) Kirsten Flipkens vs. Paszek, and (26) Anastasia Pavlyuchenko vs. another American who likes grass in Riske…A (1) Serena vs. (2) Sharapova quarterfinal looms…Serena’s path is new American Anna Tatishvili, then likely another American in Christina McHale, (25) Alize Cornet, then Bouchard or (20) Andrea Petkovic…Sharapova’s road would be Brit (WC) Sam Murray, then likely (Q) Timea Bacsinszky, Pavlyuchenkova or Riske, then (9) Kerber.
Top 3 seeds: (3) Simona Halep, (7) Jelena Jankovic, (11) Ana Ivanovic
Floaters: (Q) Vicky Duval, Donna Vekic, (WC) Taylor Townsend, Madison Keys, Kaia Kanepi
Watch For: Halep’s easy draw…Tough openers for (29) Sorana Cirstea vs. (Q) Duval, (21) Roberta Vinci vs. Vekic, (31) Klara Koukalova vs. (WC) Townsend, and (7) Jankovic vs. Kanepi…Koukalova/Townsend winner will likely meet Keys, a grasscourt title winner this weekend…This quarter is a compete toss-up.
Top 3 seeds: (4) Aggie Radwanska, (8) Victoria Azarenka, (10) Dominika Cibulkova
Floaters: CoCo Vandeweghe, (Q) Aleksandra Wozniak, Caroline Garcia, Kimiko Date-Krumm
Watch For: The rusty Azarenka going out in the first couple rounds…Tough openers for (27) Garbine Murguruza vs. Vandeweghe in a rematch of the American’s win last week, (10) Cibulkova vs. (Q) Wozniak, (14) Sara Errani a fish out of water vs. the French riser Garcia, and the ageless Date-Krumm who will do her best to trouble (22) Ekaterina Makarova…(4) Radwanska opens against a qualifier, with (28) Svetlana Kuznetsova looming in the 3rd round…Great draw for Radwanska to dominate this quarter.
Top 3 seeds: (2) Li Na, (6) Petra Kvitova, (12) Flavia Pennetta
Floaters: (16) Caroline Wozniacki, (18) Sloane Stephens, (30) Venus Williams, Maria Kirilenko, Yanina Wickmayer
Watch For: Two former No. 1s and three former Slam winners making the bottom quarter the most interesting…Few tough openers but (18) Stephens will need to deal with the veteran Kirilenko to start, and (17) Sam Stour will meet the resurgent Yanina Wickmayer…Easy early going for Na and Kvitova…Delicious potential quarterfinals include (6) Kvitova vs. (30) Venus in a battle of former All England Club champs, and (2) Na vs. (16) Woz or (17) Stosur.
Keep your fingers crossed for the Serena vs. Maria and Kvitova vs. Venus quarterfinals, and the champions should unravel from there.
