Gael Monfils has been a shell of his of former entertaining self this week at the US Open and so far it’s paying off. The former Junior No. 1 has reached the quarterfinals without losing a set. And tomorrow night in a marquee quarterfinal he’ll face 5-time champion Roger Federer.

“He’s definitely the legend of the tennis,” Monfils said. “I think right now he’s the greatest tennis player we ever had, and for me it’s always challenging to play against him. It’s always great, because no matter what, you know, I will say to my children, you know, I played against him. Even I kill him, you know. And this is cool. And when you have this chance, you know, it’s why, you know, I think I play tennis for, to against a big legend, big court, short time. That’s what I train for. That’s why every day I wake up and I wish I could play those matches.

“For me it’s the best thing can happen is to play against that guy on that stage.”

Federer has beaten Monfils seven of nine times including a tough three setter this summer in Cincinnati.

The coachless-Monfils is trying to make his second career Grand Slam semifinal.

Humble Rafa Says:

I also have stories to tell my children and grand children. Actually, even if you are an adult, I will tell you my story.

Do you know what I own?

andrea Says:

Krishna Says:

Wow Wawa out of US Open ..

Okiegal Says:

Now, if Gael can tell his grand kids he beat him…..wow, that would be even better!! C’mon Gael!!!

Tennis Fan Says:

Gael is you know a tricky guy … he may just throw the match to throw Federer off … and that would make sense to him …

Casey Says:

Nishikori is playing well at the moment, but the acting is so farken cringe-worthy. The biggest faker on tour at the moment after Djokovic, no questions about it.

skeezer Says:

HR,
“He’s definitely the legend of the tennis,” Monfils said. “I think right now he’s the greatest tennis player we ever had..”
Rinse, repeat.
Ask the real Rafa, he would agree. You need to study more with your psuedo job.

Monfils has a real shot here, he is playing better than ever.

steve-o Says:

Monfils is indeed playing very well. But if Federer is playing his best tennis, there can be only one outcome, no matter how well Monfils plays.

Now’s the big test of whether he’s mastered the new racket. Go Roger!

Humble Rafa Says:

These two guys are playing like ladies, unable to hold serve. It’s not a sexist statement if it’s a fact.

skeezer Says:

Margot,
“These two guys are playing like ladies, unable to hold serve. It’s not a sexist statement ”
?

Kimmi Says:

It’s like they switch the tie breaker. Strange match

Michael Says:

And that is Monfils tribute to the legend and Roger has gained respect in the Tennis fraternity through his mind boggling achievements.

rogerafa Says:

@ okiegal

Gael has beaten Roger in the past. More than once I think.

Okiegal Says:

@Rogerafa

Good, I hope he can do it again!! If he does beat him, he will be so pumped up he could win the whole thing…….but I rather doubt it. If Gael would settle down and play tennis and stop being a show off, I think he would be more successful……more subdued like he was in his last match. I love to watch him play, the funny stuff is entertaining, but screws up his game, imo. Good luck Gael, you will need it!

Okiegal Says:

Who’d a thunk it, Cilic? Definitely did not see this one coming, good for him! Into the semi finals!!
