On a packed scheduled, nine of the Top 10 men in the world will all be in action Wednesday at the Shanghai Masters.

Two-time champion Novak Djokovic seeks his 26th straight win in China against rising youngster Dominic Thiem in a first-time meeting. Rafael Nadal, who announced he’s battling appendicitis, faces friend and countryman Feliciano Lopez. Nadal leads Lopez 9-2.

Roger Federer makes his fall debut and gets a first look at Argentine Leonardo Mayer and Andy Murray, a winner today, tangles with towering Jerzy Janowicz.

“It’s very different conditions here than in Beijing,” said 2-time champion Murray after a win today. “Courts are different, very different balls. It’s quicker here. The ball goes through the air a little bit quicker. But I was hitting the ball pretty clean, so it was a good start.”

Djokovic, Nadal and Federer are locked in a 3-way battle for the year-end No. 1 ranking.

Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych are also all on court in second round play. Berdych tries to improve a 3-6 record against Richard Gasquet.

Earlier today, Mikhail Youzhny, Vasek Pospisil and Steve Johnson were among the first round winners. Ivo Karlovic, who upset Marin Cilic yesterday, also advanced. Seeds Ernests Gulbis (Youzhny) and Kevin Anderson (Kukushkin) both fell.

Shanghai is exactly 12 hours ahead of USA Eastern time.

Rave1955 Says:

How can you play if you are battling appendicitis. Is that not something that needs surgery?

jane Says:

well, not just cilic; dimitrov is out too.

Hippy Chick Says:

^And Stan^….

FedEpxress Says:

for 2 meter guy janowizc has one of the worst serves. serves like RBA

FedExpress Says:

for 2 meter guy janowizc has one of the worst serves. serves like RBA

where are the free points, where are the aces

Colin Says:

And now Nishikori goes out to Jack Sock! The race to the WTF is proving far from straightforward.

Andy played a few loose shots today, but he also played some beauties. I love that hooked cross-court forehand. Most importantly, he served well, producing a number of aces when they were needed. Janowicz had leg trouble, as these big heavy guys often do, and by the end he had little mobility.

Ferrer next for Andy, which will probably be a dour contest, which I expect Andy to win, but he’ll have to work hard and it will very likely go to three sets.

Wog boy Says:

Nole is through, exelent match, bright future infront of Thiem.

Sirius Says:

^agreed. Excellent for a 1st rd match.

I’ve become a fan of this guy, Thiem, today. Really liked his game

Hippy Chick Says:

Impressive from Andy, dissapointd about Kei,Nole looks unbeatable at the moment….

Hippy Chick Says:

Thiem great game,and a bright future ahead….

Hippy Chick Says:

Milos withdraws commies dont know why as yet,an opening for Andy perhaps?

Brando GOAT poster Says:

Completely agree re Thiem. Him and Kyrgios will probably duke it out for the next big dominant force. Nishikori, Cilic and co can be Slam winners for sure but they are tad too old and to close to famed 4 in terms of age/ era overlap to dominate. By the time Rafa, Nole and Muzza are in 30s I think Thiem will enter age 24: same age Novak stepped up and had his 2011, switch up a level year. Post this famed 4: there definitely will be a vacuum at the top a la early 2000′s. a talent like Thiem could be the one to take advantage. He’s impressed against Novak today, Rafa at FO and even Andy prior to that. Kids got talent for sure!

Brando GOAT poster Says:

Rafa down 5-2 and at 50% first serve in. Not surprised. With the rotation of the stomach during an appendicitis issue serving is not a picnic affair. The best thing would be a loss for him today and also withdrawal from Basel. Get the operation done since antibiotics can ease the issue but when you play matches in a sport like Tennis it will rear its ugly head.

Margot Says:

Gr8 to see Andy serving so well. Makes it look so easy when he does.
@Hippy
Guess Kei has played a little too much tennis lately.
Hands up- another Thiem fan here!

Daniel Says:

4 of the top 10 seeds lost today: Stan, Kei, Dimit and Raonic wothdraw (very odd).

Nadal down a set but it was just a break. Lopez serve ca als be broken if Nadal retunr a few balls and play to his BH.

The game Nadal was broken he was plang a lot to Lopez FH.

Berduch won and is looking like will be him and Murray to qualify.

Daniel Says:

But clearly he is not in his best condition

Brando GOAT poster Says:

Set one to Lopez. Feli playing well. Rafa as expected all things considered. I will be surprised if this goes to a 3rd set to be very honest.

Hippy Chick Says:

It must be the one occasion that i dont really care about the result….

Hippy Chick Says:

Not much celebration about breaking the Lopez serve either….

Hippy Chick Says:

People for once should actually give him credit for at least trying on this occasion, couldve pulled out put chose to play, win or lose Rafas given it his best shot here….

Brando GOAT poster Says:

And so it was: Lopez in 2. Get that operation and rest Rafa! Your fans don’t want you toiling away on court with such a issue being present!

Daniel Says:

And Nadal is out. Not expecting much from him after that news. Now he must get back to spain and decide further treatment. He will have at least 2 weeks before he plays his first macth in Basel if he decides to play.

The number 1 race is now between Djoko and Fed. Nada is now more than 2700 pts benind Djoko and he would have to virtually win Basel, Pari and WTF and hope Djoko loses everything from now on. Impossible.

For Fededer the potential semis between him and Djoko could determine his chances for YE#1 or if Murray beats Djoko in quarters.

Fed’s draw open up and he is safe for semis (Kei and Dimi out) but he will have to do his parts and win his matches.

Hippy Chick Says:

Big congrats to Lopez for a famous victory and big upset,i had no expectations regarding Rafa, and i do admire him for at least playing and giving it a try,Novaks pretty much sealed the number 1 ranking,so IMO he should pull out for the remainder of the season and have the operation to have it removed and rest and get ready for next season….

Felipe Says:

Another loss that does not count for Rafa (not 100% healthy, no)

Hippy Chick Says:

Jeez the guy has appendicitis for crying out loud, nobody was even saying that Lopez win rather than Rafas loss doesnt count, and read Daniels post above whos not even a Nadal fan,but i believe his words at the start of the post were not expecting much after the news, its called perspective, thats right perspective?….

Hippy Chick Says:

To add and read my post above,i believe my exact words were Congrats to Lopez on a famous victory and upset?

Gordon Says:

When’s the last time an appendix has troubled a top ATP player? Rafa must be so disappointed with all that has befallen him over the years.

As I’ve written before – the man is brilliant and he has all the tools. If only he had a better toolbox.

Okiegal Says:

Congrats to Feli! If my guy had to lose, glad it was to Feli!

Rafa, get home and make the decision about this health issue……we want you healthy for Aussie Open!! Best wishes and GET WELL!

In the meantime, Fed just got broken by Mayer…

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Gordon. great line.
Too bad for Rafa, I would guess he might be done for the year, but I really don’t know about appendectomy recovery.

Strange about Milos. Kei, I’m not surprised, but Dmitrov is a big disappointment. Rafa’s side of the draw has really opened up for Berdych.

Djokovic certainly seems every inch the world #1.

the DA Says:

Haha, Mayer is really taking it to Roger today. I can’t believe where he’s finding this level. Roger looks as perplexed as we viewers are.

Daniel Says:

Meyer with excelent returns in the corners

Daniel Says:

Federer done his part and hold serve. Meyer to serve first set, let’s see ifh will have a blip

Daniel Says:

Another BP for Federer gone, but Meyer almost DF

Daniel Says:

Federe level the set. Meyer nervous to close making a lot of mistakes. Experience rules smetimes.

RZ Says:

Andy vs. Ferrer in his next match. Winner will be in the top 8 in the running for London.

Lots of upsets and withdrawals today. Kei had played a lot of tennis and won his last 2 tournaments, so he had to come down to earth at some point. And no real surprise with Feli over Rafa all things considered. This is probably a blessing in disguise for Rafa, who can now take care of his appendix.

RZ Says:

^ I spoke too soon. No guarantee that the winner of Murray/Ferrer will move into the top 8 for the race to London (it’s more of a likelihood).

Hippy Chick Says:

IMO Mayer all of a sudden realized whom he was playing,so got tight and choked when serving for the set?….

skeezer Says:

Fed wins the first against an inspired Mayer. Great to see Fed back in action again.

Daniel Says:

Wow, another break and Fed takes first set. Meyer will probably think too much that he was leading 5-3 15-30 and than had set points. Expcg Fed to wn second but Fed is not playing great. Decent! But first mtches and he is seeking match rhytm

jane Says:

kei out too, and rafa, but considering his health issue this seems for the best.

Daniel Says:

Fed 1 set away from returning to #2 in ATP rankings.

Brando GOAT Poster Says:

Fed deserves the no.2 rank.

He was a set away from winning a Slam, won a MS at Cincy and reached the finals in IW, Monte Carlo and Rogers Cup. Also won Dubai and Halle.

It’s undeniable the Rafa scenario has helped the maths for Fed, but at age 33 for him to be even in contention he deserves that bit of luck.

He’s earned it. He would deserve it.

Not wawrinka though: barring AO, Chennai and Monte Carlo, for me personally, he’s been absolutely horrendous. I don’t think he’s even reached a single final outside those 3 events. Maybe even a SF. Shocking stuff from a guy who started the year with a bang 12-0.

Daniel Says:

Federer wants to complicated his life. This match has a lot of deuce games. He is misng a lot of volleys as well.

Daniel Says:

This year seems most players are struggling with consistency. Even Djoko had a blip in US swing.

We can’t predict anything and since there is a lot of guys who made a mark in some part of the season the ups and downs are more occuring. Wawa, Kei, Gulbis, Raonic, Tsonga, Colic, Dimitrov and even top guys.

FedExpress Says:

Everybody plays well nowadays against fed, even nobodies

RZ Says:

Come on Fed, don’t join the exodus…

Vinod Says:

Come on FED !!!

RZ Says:

Same advice for Fed that I had for him during his U.S. Open match with Monfils – just hold serve….

RZ Says:

Uh, going down 4-5 15-40 is NOT following my advice to hold serve.

Okiegal Says:

Mayer is hanging in there, but Rog will get r done!!

Felipe Says:

If nothing out of this world happens, Djokovic will finish as world number 1 for a third time (equalling nadal), will reclaim the year end number one after losing it the previous year (equalling nadal and federer), will likely ramain world number one at least until march 2015(25 weeks),thus equalling nadals 141 weeks at the top of the ranking. The guy is slowly equalling or surpassing significants records, and i think he has 2 more years of top tennis. But he must win the French open in order to be considered a top 5 all time champion. First, Shanghai and his 20 Master series trophy.

Felipe Says:

Federer in big troubles

the DA Says:

That miss on MP is going to haunt Mayer. Whatever happens, I’m seriously impressed with how he’s played today. Who knew?

Daniel Says:

TiebreK. This will be tense.

Can Fed win another mtch after sabing MP ala Monfios US Open?!

RZ Says:

Mayer did beat Ferrer in a clay final earlier this year.

Daniel Says:

Thought the serve was out too. Bad call!

Daniel Says:

His level didn’t drop the whole match apart from blip whne serving first set.

RZ Says:

@Daniel, I hope so, but I also hope that Fed stops using the saved match points and the resulting opponent demoralization as a strategy! Especially as it is not working today as Mayer doesn’t seem demoralized.

Hippy Chick Says:

Daniel sorry i like your posts and i dont know if English is your first language but can you watch your type Os as im sometimes struggling to understand what you mean?

Daniel Says:

Federer doing his magic and winning this point down 5-2

Daniel Says:

Wow, Meyer lost 2 mini pbreaks andplace Fed back in te match for the third time.

Daniel Says:

Can’t believe Fed did this. Wow!!!

Daniel Says:

iPad HC. :-(

Hippy Chick Says:

WOW Some choking by Mayer….

Daniel Says:

This tibereak isnsane. C’mon Fed. 4 MP saved

Daniel Says:

5 saved. If Fed gets a MP I think he will do it. ace Fed

Daniel Says:

MP Fed. first on Meyer serve.

Daniel Says:

Amazingggg lobby to close the match

Daniel Says:

What a match.
Congrats Fed back to number 2 next Monday.

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Oh, Mayer looks crushed!!

Hippy Chick Says:

Sad for Mayer poor guys in tears, class from Roger there at the end,5 mps saved wow….

RZ Says:

And phew….Fed, I go through enough roller coasters with Andy Murray. No need for you to keep doing that to me too!

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Remarkable mental strength from Fed, absolutely willing himself through all those match points.

TennisVagabond.com Says:

On-paper, easy road to semis now. See what RBA says!

Hippy Chick Says:

Roger showed a champions mentality, congrats on regaining the number 2 ranking….

van orten Says:

What Was that ????

Felipe Says:

WOW!!!….poor Mayer, this will haunt him forever

Skeezer Says:

Congrats to the Maestro still creating magic on the court and getting to the #2 int the ATP rankings @ an astonishing age of 33!! The ultimate GOAT herder.

Okiegal Says:

The maestro is clawing his way back to the #1 ranking…….willie make it?? With Novak’s little one about to be on the scene and Rafa’s latest woes……things could get interesting. Come on TX…..we need a poll!! The one where you wanted a bunch of tennis fans to decide whether or not Rafa needed surgery was weird……..

Wog boy Says:

Are we going to have thread about yesterday matches? It was few matches worth talking about.

skeezer Says:

^Yes! Thread on the tourney pahleeaase!
