Federer fans, take a look at the above article on the BBC website.

And a happy un-Christmas to other atheists on the forum – if there are any!

Hippy Chick Says:

Colin nice article, and thank goodness, let the children decide for themselves what they wish to do with their lives, when they are old enough….

Happy Christmas to you,im not a christian,im a Pagan and we celebrate Yule between the 21st and 23rd of December, its all to do with the Winter Solstice anyway….

Colin Says:

Well then, Hippy, a Happy Yule to you!
Christmas originally was nowhere near Dec 25, as you can tell from the names of the months SEPTember,OCTober and NOVember : 7, 8, and 9. Thus the first month of the year was actually March.

Thomas Hardy(I think it was)wrote a poem about seeing some women praying at the grave of a relative, unaware that the coffin had been moved for the construction of a drain! Hardy makes it clear that it doesn’t matter – what matters is their tribute to the departed. Surely the same thing would apply to Christmas.

Colin Says:

Whee! I found the poem and it was indeed by Thomas Hardy. Here it is:

‘You see those mothers squabbling there?’
Remarks the man of the cemetery.
‘One says in tears, “‘Tis mine lies here!”
Another, “Nay, mine, you Pharisee!”
Another, “How dare you move my flowers
And put your own on this grave of ours!”
But all their children were laid therein
At different times, like sprats in a tin.
‘And then the main drain had to cross,
And we moved the lot some nights ago,
And packed them away in the general foss
With hundreds more. But their folks don’t know,
And as well cry over a new-laid drain
As anything else, to ease your pain!’

Hippy Chick Says:

Colin thanks for that info lol, this time of yeah i remember my departed relatives especially my parents, but i still wish everyone here a Happy Christmas anyway, but im really looking forward to the New Year and getting back to the tennis especially the AO,bring it on….

Okiegal Epitaph on the late great Spike Milligans tombstone read I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL! LOL….

Okiegal Says:

@Chick……LOL……I had a good male friend that passed away in his late 50s……young by my standards….. his tombstone epitaph was along those same lines…..”I told you I was sick”……I couldn’t believe it. He was also known to be a lazy sort….A man in town hired him to do a small job for him…..don’t guess he was earning his pay and the man said “Well, he’s a ball of fire”……that quote was on his tombstone too! Everyone gets a laugh when they pay respects!! Lol

Hippy Chick Says:

Okiegal its nice to see the funny side, even in the saddest of situations, anyway hope you have a a lovely Yuletide?i got an early present curtesy of Madamax on the Roger/Rafa/Courier thread a Bio on Mr Jackman,oh my be still my beating heart lol ;-))….

Hippy Chick Says:

^LOL Unfortunatly i didnt get him under my tree though^….

Okiegal Says:

@Chick…..My family has had a wonderful holiday season. Loved the little ones anxiety over Santa and then watching them open presents and then playing with the boxes and wrapping paper more than the toys! We had lots of good food and lots of laughter…..feeling blessed!!

Sounds like Madmax is looking out for you! Mr Jackman is nice in any way, form or fashion!! I missed it….Will have to search it out. I know his wife is older than him……but nothing wrong with that…..I’m older than Okieguy too!! Hope you had a great Yuletide too!!

Hippy Chick Says:
