Maybe the highlight of Victoria Azarenka’s Friday wasn’t earning her first career win over Venus Williams, but it was later meeting footballer David Beckham who was in the stands watching her semifinal victory.
Azarenka said she noticed the English legend during the match.
“When they showed him on the TV, everybody started screaming,” Azarenka said. “Of course I noticed that. I tried to show off a little bit of my football skills to keep the crowd entertaining.”

“I don’t know what’s not to love about him, to be honest,” Azarenka said about Beckham. “But I think it’s always there are going to be some people who like things, who don’t like things. I think the important is to have your opinion and stick to that. I appreciate somebody from another sport, such a top class athlete being here and supporting our game. I think it’s important for tennis, not just women’s tennis, but it’s important to feel that support from other athletes. Like we go to football games, to basketball games. It’s kind of return of favor if you can call it that. I appreciate it. I think it makes it more entertaining. Haters will late. Just let them do it.”
Azarenka will seek a fourth Doha title today against lefty Lucie Safarova. The former No. 1 has won her last 14 matches at the event.
