jane Says:

wow, flavia has been cruising over halep and halep is the only person left in the draw with “1″ win over serena.

jane Says:

6-1 flavia…

jane Says:

and she starts with a break in the second. horrid. halep not even fighting. flat. no winners, just errors.

jane Says:

i thought halep was coming back, as she had the break, but flavia got it back. on serve 2-3 now.

jane Says:

flavia breaks at love. just a couple games away from us open finals.

i suspect serena is smiling. all the main threats were on the opposite side, and all have (almost) been eliminated: halep, kvitova and esp vika.

jane Says:

has to be said: abysmal performance from halep.
congrats though to flavia!

RZ Says:

That was fast…Wonder why Pennetta can’t sustain good form year-round?

Flavia Pennetta defeats Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3. At 33, she becomes the oldest woman to be a first time grand slam finalist in the Open era.”

“old” is the new trend in tennis.

Margot Says:

Awful match wasn’t it jane? What is up with Halep?

jalep Says:

Very happy for Flavia!

Flavia is at a great place in her career and life!
Forzaaaaa! Flavia

#Pennetta is the lowest seed to make the #usopen final since Serena was seeded No. 28 in 2011.

—-

yep margot, very poor for a grand slam semi. : /

jalep Says:

Simona was lucky to get past Kerber and Vika, Margot. She has an injured thigh and was cramping during the Kerber match. She only won that one because Kerber started cramping more than Halep was hurting in the decider set.

Not sure what happened in the Vika match but it also went the distance. Really think Flavia will be better than a wounded, worn out Simona. Flavia looks strong. Don’t give anyone much chance vs Serena, though.

Margot Says:

Saw a bit of Simona v Vika, jalep, and thought she was moving better than previous match. I like Kerber very much, it was a shame she lost, she played better I think. But que sera.
Simona has had this injury for ages, hasn’t she?

Daniel Says:

Halep should have let Vika win Quarters. Bet she would fought harder.

jane Says:

yep it’s too bad vika didnt come through that quarter, in hindsight.

it’s probably neither here nor there as jalep says but you want to see a decent match at least in a grand slam final. or it seems anticlimactic.

jalep Says:

Seems so Margot, about the taped thigh.

But Kerber unfortunately had issues with the conditions – cramping badly, which surprised me because I think of Angelique as one of the fittest.

Have no idea how Simona got past Vika and then has nothing today. And Flavia said after beating Petra that it was her(flavia’s) better conditioning/fitness that allowed her the win. And that I can believe because of Petra’s health issues since spring.

Pannetta is fiesty and will do her best, she has Fabio in her corner…life is good at the moment. Nothing to lose :D

Giles Says:

Well done Flavia! Goodbye Halep, sweet dreams.

RZ Says:

One of the theories about Halep’s loss is that she is currently being coached by Darren Cahill under the Adidas contract, and since Pennetta is also sponsored by Adidas, he was not allowed to coach for this match.

jane Says:

what a nightmare theory RZ. so sponsors control the outcome of tennis matches? if that’s the case, it’s horrid. :/

hope flavia can bring it in the final, jalep, and at least make a match of it.

Margot Says:

Have stopped watching Serena match
a) we know who will win
b) boring
:(

jalep Says:

Wow, RZ.

That’s some fuel for an already cynical mind. Nike and Adidas.

Stuff like that is common in cycling – UCI favors team Sky and makes sure certain rivals and their teams are weakened by finding a way to keep them out of competition for a Grand Tour or smears them in the press. Murdoch control at its best. The average cycling fan has no clue – it all looks legit.

Margot Says:

But when Andy was with Adidas Cahill just helped out with some coaching while Andy was coachless, surely he wouldn’t be the main coach of these two?

jane Says:

jalep fabio tweeted the most adorable gif of flavia’s reaction to her win. so cute how he’s cheering.

margot, same. just stopped. sigh…

Margot Says:

jalep, thought it was Tomas Hogstadt, unless she sacked him after two ticks.
So I don’t understand how the sponsors have any say whatsoever.

Jeez Says:

Vinci serving for SET 2

For

1-1 !!!

RZ Says:

@Jane and Jalep – actually I think that’s what they are trying to avoid. From what I understand, Adidas provide coaches for the players (probably more along the lines of a “coaching consultant”) but doesn’t allow the coach to provide advice/support/etc. when the opponent is also sponsored by Adidas. In some ways it sounds fair to me – the company is not going to go against their players but providing one with an advantage. But really for any player to lean heavily on a part-time coach with conflicts of interest is not a smart long-term strategy.

Jeez Says:

SET POINT

For VINCI

& She takes it!!!

ITALIA !!

Jeez Says:

And they say VINCI is a DOUBLES player!!!

Even if Vinci loses from here, she has done a GREAT JOB!!

Jeez Says:

DOUBLE FAULT

by

Serena

to give the break back

1-2

Vinci to serving in the 3rd !!

Ben Pronin Says:

Jeez, you’re watching? Is it really that Vinci is playing so well or is Serena screwing up?

Jeez Says:

DOUBLE FAULT

by

Serena

to give the break back

1-2

Vinci to serving in the 3rd

Jeez Says:

DOUBLE FAULT

by

Serena

to give the break back

2-2

Ben Pronin Says:

I watched Vinci play in the previous round. I wasn’t impressed. She has nothing to hurt Serena with. I can only assume she’s coaxing her into errors with that slice.

Jeez Says:

@Ben Pronin

I only turned on TV from SET 2, very SURPRISED to find a competitive match!!

Jeez Says:

YELLING HER WAY to 3-2 SERENA !!

Jeez Says:

Can the ROAR !! Rattle VINCI???

Jeez Says:

And VINCI breaks yet again

serving 4-3 up a break !!!

Jeez Says:

If Vinci holds for 5-3, ??

she may finish The JOB!!

Jeez Says:

2 Break back points saved by VINCI

DEUCE !!

Ben Pronin Says:

Serena isn’t the most graceful mover but she will get herself to the tough balls.

Vinci doing herself no favors with all these missed first serves.

Serena is just guiding the ball now though. This might be the most tight I’ve ever seen her.

Blows 2 break points.

Jeez Says:

Serena doing SABER!!

Ben Pronin Says:

Man this is tough to watch. I feel tight and I’m just sitting at my computer.

Jeez Says:

Serena doing SABER!!

Nö vail !!

5-3 VINCI!!

Ben Pronin Says:

Weight of the world on Serena’s shoulders, it feels like. Everyone was saying if not for Wawrinka, Djokovic would be in the same position but I have no idea how he’d handle this pressure. This is insane.

Jeez Says:

Serena hoping for a

CHOKE from Vinci to get through !!!

jane Says:

i don’t think it can be called “sabr” if that stands for “sneaky attack by roger”, unless serena can now transform herself too. ha.

y’all know she’s going to win right? she’ll hold, break, hold and break. or do it in a tiebreak.

Ben Pronin Says:

Would this be the biggest upset of all time?

RZ Says:

@Jane – she does sometimes call herself Rena, so SABR could still work.

Ben Pronin Says:

I have never been less sure of a Serena win before.

jane Says:

omg, okay i may have to eat my words?! 3 match points for vinci!

Ben Pronin Says:

Unbelievable shot to go up 30-0.

RZ Says:

All credit to Vinci who took advantage of a soft draw and a walkover to get to Serena, and then handled the occasion to get to the final.

Ben Pronin Says:

What the actual fudge.

Jeez Says:

Vinci SAVIOUR of WTA or VILLIAN(for SERENA)!!!

All ITALIA !!!

Ben Pronin Says:

This has to be the greatest upset in sports history. 300 to 1 odds of winning this match. Just wow.

jane Says:

ha, good call RZ on the return name.

and oh wow, what a win by vinci!! congrats to her! imagine stepping up to serve that out…

‏@carole_bouchard
Vinci head under towel. Can’t even imagine how she feels. Whole stadium/country against her.

and oh wow, i feel kinda sad for serena. :/

WOW!

Jeez Says:

Winners – Unforced Errors

SERENA 50-40
VINCI 19-20

TOTAL POINTS WON 93-85 !!!

WHAT !!!!!!!!!!!

Jeez Says:

Winners – Unforced Errors

SERENA 50-40
VINCI 19-20

TOTAL POINTS WON 93-85 !!!

WHAAAAAAAAAT !!!!!!!!!!!

jane Says:

someone on twitter was wondering if the italian president sold his soul in a faustian deal. the italians have had a great us open. one lady will be champ, and fabio took out a 2 time champ himself.

a chi vuole, non mancano modi!!

Jeez Says:

Not a BETTING guy..

Whoever won BETTING against Serena !!?????

Margot Says:

Well, well. Who’d a thought it? Not me for sure.
Fabulous court interview too. All Italian final…wow!
300-1 she was. Anyone on tx make some money…;)

Jeez Says:

UPSET galore in WTA

Will those SOOTH SAYERSstill believe

ROGER & DJOKOVIC are the clear Favourites ??

Jeez Says:

UPSET galore in WTA

Will those SOOTH SAYERS still believe

ROGER & DJOKOVIC are the clear Favourites ??

jane Says:

margot, yeah her court interview was so sweet. her smile. :D

RZ Says:

@Jeez – Fed & Djokovic were the clear favorites this time last year, only to lose to Cilic and Nishikori…

jane Says:

^ indeed RZ, lest we forget, a couple italian ladies just reminded us.

i suspect stan and cilic might’ve been inspired a little, no?

Jeez Says:

VOLLEY WINNER @ the end had to be the real statement of

TOURNAMENT, if not the possibility of wining with 1HBH – S&V

:-}

RZ Says:

An importnat thing to keep in mind is that Vinci and Pennetta are both former #1s in doubles and both hold several doubles slam titles. That experience has to have helped get them through tough matches.

As for Stan and Cilic, they are both current slam holders so if they win it wouldn’t be a huge upset, more of a mild one.

jalep Says:

dumbstruck.

… that subdued the commentators.

And…not that anyone had time to click on my link above, (I hope) but that was the wrong one and wrong coach for Flavia.( from 2009, that) gosh.

Salvador Navarro is her coach now.

yeah…sorry for Serena – that press conference was tough but she handled it well.

Emily Says:

Thought Vinci was really sweet in her on-court interview, though position to be in. she was just able to hold her nerve in a way Watson couldn’t, or maybe Serena was just so close to the finish line. Really tough for her, but it’s a great achievement for both Italians.

jalep Says:

Congrats to Roberta! May the best Italian win :D

Jeez Says:

Anyway gotta catch some sleep before waking up for

Men’s semifinal !!!

Zzzzzzzzz…….

jane Says:

if i had just bet 1 dollar i’d have 300 hundred! jeepers…

i am still shocked, esp after set 1. it seemed set in stone that serena would win it all.

just goes to show…..you never know.

Emily Says:

They compared this to the miracle win of the American hockey team over the Russians in 1980. Don’t think they’ll make a movie based on this, everybody was just a little too sure

Daniel Says:

Vinci on court interview was epic.

Serena leaving the press conference without any saying to journalist and not answering some question were bizarre. Ot took her 9 minutes from the moment she loss to leave the complex.

Seems Like she was suffering in this run while Vinci was just having fun.
