Day two at the WTA Finals in Singapore had two darkhorses cruising to wins in the White Group. Favorite Petra Kvitova was taken out by Kerber 6-2, 7-6(3) while Garbine Muguruza defeated Lucie Safarova by a similar score of 6-3, 7-6(4), in a battle of two Finals debutants.
“It was a very tough match, I was very nervous as it was my first time here playing singles,” Muguruza said afterward.
Tuesday’s schedule features Agnieszka Radwanska bidding for her 500th career match win against US Open champion Flavia Pennetta as both seek their first victory of the week. In the main event, Simona Halep tests Maria Sharapova in a rematch of their 2014 French Open final epic.
Sharapova leads 5-0 but Halep has won a set in their last three, though this is their first meeting of the season. The winner could also claim a berth in the semifinals.
“I have positive thoughts about this match against Maria here,” Halep said over the weekend. “Of course I can lose it, and I can win it. It’s not very important the result. I just want to play my best against her and to do a better game than in the final of the French Open last year. I know how to play against her now.
“I hope and believe I have my chance against her. I think it’s good timing to face her again.”
Sharapova is the lone former champion in the field having won the title in her debut in 2004 beating Serena Williams.
