Rafael Nadal won his third straight three set match today in Basel, turning away Marin Cilic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. It wasn’t Nadal’s best stuff, but after an early break in the third the former No. 1 cruised to victory over the 2014 US Open champ, and continued to rebuild his confidence.

On a long day in which all four quarterfinal matches went the distance, Richard Gasquet kept his slim London hopes alive saving a match point to beat Ivo Karlovic in a final set breaker 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(6).

Karlovic falls to 0-9 this year in final set breakers.

Gasquet, who has to win both Basel and Paris to have any chance at London, moves on to face Nadal in the semifinals.

Jack Sock continued his rise beating compatriot Donald Young in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. All three wins this week for Sock have come at the expense of fellow Americans.

“It feels great. I didn’t expect to play three Americans in a row coming over here to Europe in the fall,” said Sock who also beat Denis Kudla and John Isner. “But it’s good for American tennis. Unfortunately, I had to play three friends in a row. But it feels good to be in my first semi.”

Awaiting Sock in the semis is 6-time champion Roger Federer. The Swiss superstar needed to three sets to brush off David Goffin in a match that ended close to midnight. In the rematch of the 2014 Basel final, Federer won again this time 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Federer beat Sock in their only meeting earlier this year at Indian Wells 6-3, 6-2.

jane Says:

sorry i don’t know where to put this, but for novak fans here’s his possible opponents in paris:

R32 Kolchreiber or Bellucci
R16 Paire/Monfils/Simon
QF Tsonga/Agut/Karlovic/Berdych
SF Wawrinka/Andreson/Nadal

all the frenchies in that quarter!

Humble Rafa Says:

I feel it…I feel it..oh..the great rivalry..and total uncontested ownership…the break points on the ad court…I feel it

madmax Says:

Well,Staff, I think that Federer has been “toughing out” a few of these matches himself! Don’t leave it just to rafa.

Well done to both for coming through their respective matches. It has not been smooth play for either player.

FedExpress Says:

if gasquet only had a solid FH

but he leads with a break 2-0

jalep Says:

Come on Richee. Hang in there. It’s a bleak h2h with Rafa but – maybe get a set?

Rafa likes to play Richard. oh my.
Thinking Sock will take out Federer to spare me the Fedal, maybe.

Daniel Says:

Gasquet lead 4-2 only to lose the set 6-4.

Nadal’s return is getting better and apart from the first game when he had game point first and was broken, the match is in his terms. Gasquet managed to stay with him due to first serves.

Expect Nadal to win easy now. Gsquet only shot was to maybe have won that first set. We could fast forward to Fed’s match and hope for a Fedal tomorrow.

FedExpress Says:

Gasquet useless as it gets. Mug

FedExpress Says:

Shake hands gasquet and go home. What a useless talent

Okiegal Says:

How do the cameramen know when to zero in on coaches’ coaching?? I believe Gasquet’ s coach was caught giving him a few pointers???

jalep Says:

Hi Okiegal — hope you are doin’ ok.

Okiegal Says:

Back at cha’Jalep…..I’m getting by….good days and bad. It’s rained for two days at my home….I’m rather gloomy atm…..but there will be sunny days at some point….Thanks for asking!

Daniel Says:

Gasquet again breaking for 2-0 lead, deja vu. How long will it last? I say 2 service games.

Okiegal Says:

@Daniel: I say…”I hope you’re right!”

Wog Boy Says:

Oki,
I think they have cameras that are permanently zoomed on coaches, it is up to the the person, whatever his name is, who has the control of all the cameras in action to choose which one he is to show us.

Margot Says:

Hi OKiegal :)
U doing OK gal?

Wog Boy Says:

Is Gasquet about to chocke, looks like it…as of late they are all chocking;)

Daniel Says:

This is starting to get pathetic now, will it happen to Federer as well tomorrow should they meet?

Gasquet serve 5-4 (led 5-3) and risk losing 7-5, my bet.

FedExpress Says:

hahahaha
what a mug this gasquet is. mentally strong like a chicken

Okiegal Says:

I had to step away for a few minutes and Rafa dud break back! Spot on Daniel!

Okiegal Says:

^^^^Did not dud, but Gasquet might have thought it was a dud! Lol

Wog Boy Says:

Bloody chokers..

FedExpress Says:

rafa should have lost every match he has played
this week

played known chokers so far

Daniel Says:

The only positive for Fed should they meet tomorrow is that everybody broke Nadal’s serve multiple times this week, so if he doesn’t, than things will look really bad for him. If he is n a great serving day than he should have his chances, but I rather see him losing straight out than lead and lose like all those guys.

FedExpress Says:

and when nadal sees fed across the net he will play like a man possessed

FedExpress Says:

wta tour is more competitve than these mugs

jalep Says:

Rather see Sock win this tournament, Daniel. Beat both Federer and Nadal? yessssss!

Daniel Says:

Wow, Gasquet surprised me and forced a tiebreak with some nice serving.

FedExpress Says:

why hold now?

Wog Boy Says:

Here we go, TB, who is going to choke?

FedExpress Says:

god did injustice to give a beautiful BH to such a mug

jalep Says:

This is a better match than Cilic v Rafa by some margin, imo.

FedExpress Says:

but choking left and right jalep

MB for gasquet now

and he will choke it

FedExpress Says:

2 SPs for richi hahahahah

Daniel Says:

Nadal had a mini choke in tiebreak leading 4-1and going 4-6 down, 2 set points Gasquet, but now 6-6.

FedExpress Says:

both wasted. mug buy some mental toughness

FedExpress Says:

the world is a choke

FedExpress Says:

moonball FHs from rafa and richi has now clue

Wog Boy Says:

Well, Gasquet choked.. one step closer to Fedal.

jalep Says:

Just gorgeous, Richee…dtl backhand. Can’t ask for more, FedEx. You really can’t expect him to win.

Congrats Rafa fans!

FedExpress Says:

hahhahaha
rafa in the final.

gasquet, no words to describe u , u mug. serving for the set. has two SPs. led in both sets with a break. just retire

FedExpress Says:

most undeserved finilist ever

Daniel Says:

Inevitable. Now seems we are finally getting first Fedal of 2015:-)

And Nadal having a decent fall season, finals in Beijing, Semis in Shangai and at least finals in Basel.

The match with Fed tomorrow could be a turning point. If Nadal wins, 6th straight win over Fed, and first HC title since Doha 2014. If Fed wins, 7th title, break the streak if 5 losses (the most in their rivalry so far( and maybe can even get anther win in London. Because if he can’t beat this Nadal who is struggling against everybody, he won’t get any more good chances on fast courts.

FedExpress Says:

completly agree Daniel. fed should seriously consider retirment when he cant beat this nadal. every1 could have beaten him if they had some balls between their legs

Rick Says:

Fed would gets a cheap win Over Rafa in the final. Imagine if Sock suprise Fed!

Giles Says:

We don’t all get what we deserve! Life is a boitch and then you die! 🤑

Daniel Says:

Also Nadal felt somthing innhis right knee during end of second set, it was with a tape later on. Hope is not an issue.
Long time since he hasn’t complain frok knew or needed to use those bands anymore.

Rick Says:

Bargain for Fed! Told you that Rafa is silly, he trained like crazy for the end of the year! And will not rest much for the end of the trar. By the time, French Open finish next year. He will ended up in hospital.

Giles Says:

Rick. If you carry on with this type of post you might end up in hospital, no? 🤑

Rick Says:

You should know that, for many years his year ended after the French!

FedExpress Says:

monster hitting between fed and sock

fed with the break

FedExpress Says:

fed is a lucker

FedExpress Says:

where did sock buy this BH

FedExpress Says:

RIP Feds FH

Okiegal Says:

@Rick…..
Why would you say his season ended after the French??? He’s won two Wimbys and two US Opens after the French…..slams at that……

FedExpress Says:

feds serve finding their marks

in all fairness he should beat nadal tomorrow.

FedExpress Says:

feds Fh is a mess

FedExpress Says:

fed wanted ti kill sock

beware by sabring

Daniel Says:

Still think Fed is slight faborite tomorrow. He is still servinf great and if he get rhytm he should attack net and shorten points. He won’t play too much into Nadal’s way (as Nadal was able to dictate in the past). Also Nadal’s serve is vulnerable and he is still making a few errors. Fed still didn’t play this new Nadal so unless Nadal has a super performance (which I doubt with courts and indoor) or unless Fed really feels mentally he should win.

But the prt I don’t like is Fed is shakimg a few FH way too long, he needs to clean that stroke. When his serve and FH are clicking even with ocasional top spin to his BH he should be more relaxed. Also crowd support.

FedExpress Says:

feds fh is a shadow what it was

FedExpress Says:

hahahahah. feds FH is a joke

elina Says:

Sock is playing ridiculously bad.

If Roger can’t beat this version of Nadal on a sunless court in his hometown, he should give up trying.

elina Says:

Federer looping balls back into play and Sock can do nothing.

elina Says:

Sock should have played in 2003-2005. He could have been No. 2 in the world.

jatin Says:

Fed is playing some good tennis. Just 2 games away from fedal.
Finally………It felt like eternity.

elina Says:

As bad as Sock is playing, he still isn’t making Fed look good.

Sock couldn’t beat Serena.

elina Says:

Federer still looping balls back and will loop his way to indoor victory against Shoeless.

FedExpress Says:

come on

elina Says:

Federer’s second serve is a joke.

FedExpress Says:

fed is a joke

elina Says:

I take it back. So is his first serve.

Sock couldn’t gift the hold to Federer.

elina Says:

Nadal must be laughing for ten minutes watching this.

elina Says:

Sock is trying harder to hit the ball out now and it’s still close.

elina Says:

This is a horrible excuse for tennis.

elina Says:

Swiss fans deserve a refund. One sock missing.

FedExpress Says:

epic choke coming up

elina Says:

perRFectly bad tennis. Maybe Roger is reading too much.

FedExpress Says:

victory

come on fed. 6-0 6-1 beatdown plz.

elina Says:

Anything less would be an epic failure.

FedExpress Says:

all mental i think

elina Says:

Big chance for 11-23.

The glass is almost 1/3 full.

jatin Says:

Finally its FEDAL. Hoping for a good match with fed coming down as a winner :)
Bring it on…. Roger vs Rafa

elina Says:

Novak smoked Nadal 2 and 2 in Beijing.

But he’s much better than Fed.

elina Says:

Rafa has only lost one set in the last 12 vs Roger winning the last five matches. Roger hasn’t beaten Rafa in 3.5 years,

It’s been almost two years since they played.

Fed in 2.

elina Says:

Nadal is a moonballer yet Roger rarely beats him.

all mental i think

jane Says:

maybe we’ll see a poll on who people think will win.
i missed both matches today… can anyone say if they foreshadowed a result tomorrow?

Okiegal Says:

@Rick…..I re-read your comment….You said that many years his career ended after the French….I guess by some people’s estimation you could say it ended. But most everyone is in agreement that with his style of play, he was usually tuckered out by the last half of the season. Having said that, he won some masters series titles after the French, if I’m not mistaken…..
