The middle Sunday features one of its best line-ups ever with four former champions in action. The women are on early with Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams just one win from a quarterfinal collision.
Sharapova begins the day with a first-time meeting against rising 18-year-old Belinda Bencic.
“An impressive player,” Sharapova said. “A newer generation that’s already established herself in the past season, beaten a lot of top players. It’s a tough fourth round. We haven’t played against each other before, but I’m sure we’ll be playing many times. It’s great that we can start here.”
Serena will take on Margarita Gasparyan and then fellow defending champion Novak Djokovic faces French veteran Gilles Simon.
In the evening, Federer gets David Goffin.
“It’s the fourth round of a Grand Slam,” said Goffin. “Of course if you want to go in the quarterfinal you have to play a big match and you have to give everything and to play wonderful match to go to the quarterfinals.”
So I just have to be focused on what I have to do, like every match, to be aggressive and take every opportunities as I can.
In a battle of Grand Slam finalist Kei Nishikori and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lock-up. Tomas Berdych rounds out the men’s matches against Roberto Bautista Agut.
“Every time we played, it was a good fight. We have a different style,” Tsonga said. “He’s really fast. He’s consistent. He never move from his baseline. That’s the most difficult things to do, is to push him in the backyard. Is difficult because he takes the ball early and he’s consistent.”
Youngster Daria Gavirilova is also in action as is No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
