Andy Murray: It’s Been A Difficult 2 Weeks, I’m Proud To Have Made The Finals, Now I Want To Get Home

For the fifth time Andy Murray came up short in the Australian Open. In a rematch of the 2015 final, the 2016 edition result was the same with Murray falling to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 61, 75, 76(3) in Melbourne Sunday night.

After getting his doors blown off in the first set, Murray played much better in the second and third, breaking Djokovic and showing little fatigue following a 4-hour semifinal win Friday.

Djokovic, though, better in the end and just too strong. Murray falls to 9-22 vs the Serb losing 11 of their last 12 and all five now in Melbourne.

Murray’s wife is expecting a baby imminently and Kim’s father collapsed last week, so it’s been a tough event for the World No. 2. After the win, he spoke to the press.

Q. Can you give us your verdict on the match?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, basically I saw some of the stats just at the end of the match. He won 25 more points than me, 26 more points. I had 25 or 26 more unforced errors.

You know, I think I didn’t hit my forehand particularly well at the beginning of the match. I started to hit it better in the third set. But, yeah, that was it.

Q. The level of tennis in the second and third sets was pretty high, judging by your standards?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think so. I mean, the end of the second set, obviously the game I lost 40-Love up, was a tough one.

You know, maybe I could have nicked that set. I was starting to have quite a lot of opportunities in the second. I had a few chances there when I got the break back I think. That was a tough game to lose.

Then obviously in the third I felt like towards the end of the set, after I got the break back again, that I was creating a few chances.

Then obviously, you know, in the tiebreak, I missed two second serves by a little bit. He had served an ace on the T, which was in by a little bit. That was it.

Q. Can you give us some insight on what the problems were in the first set? Just couldn’t get going?
ANDY MURRAY: A lots been going on. You know, I started the last couple of matches quite slowly, I think, understandable in some respects. Obviously, you know, it’s not good to begin matches like that against someone like Novak.

But, you know, I’m proud of the way I fought and managed to get myself back into the match and create chances for myself.

But, yeah, obviously didn’t start particularly well.

Q. You’ve had a good fortnight from the first point to the end?
ANDY MURRAY: I’m proud that I got into this position, you know. Just quite looking forward to getting home now.

Q. You paid tribute to Kim at the end. How difficult has the past fortnight been?
ANDY MURRAY: It’s been hard. Yeah, I spoke about it. Regardless of today’s result, it’s been hard. Had I lost in the third or fourth round it still would have been difficult with everything that’s happened.

She’s been, yeah, amazing. Handled everything unbelievably well. Yeah, I have to thank her for allowing me to play and sort of stay here with everything that was going on.

But, yeah, it was tough.

Q. Not we’re trying to get rid of you, but what time is your plane?
ANDY MURRAY: I think the earliest one was at like 1:00, but I was booked on — I’ve been held on flights for it feels like five days. I’ve been held on almost every single flight, so the first one out of here, I’m leaving. It’s at 1:00, I think.

Q. Do you think you’re getting close to the level of Djokovic?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don’t know how far off I was tonight. The first set, you know, I wasn’t there, but the second and third sets I do think were very close.

I do think I could have played a bit better, like I said. I didn’t think I hit my forehand as well as I could have done. When I did in the third set, that helped me out a lot. I was able to get myself into the net more. I was able to play more offensive tennis then.

Yeah, I mean, most of the matches we played in slams I think have been competitive. Whether that looks the same from the outside or not, I don’t know. For a three-set match, 2 hours and 50 minutes, it was a tough few sets.

Q. Can you say how close you came to packing your bags after Nigel’s thing on Saturday?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. It was a difficult one. I mean, yeah, I don’t know. It was close. I’ve never been in that position before, so it’s as close as I’ve sort of been to leaving a Grand Slam.

But I don’t really know how close that is. But, yeah, it was a tough, tough couple of days. Thankfully he’s fine now. Yeah, I just want to get home.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Best of luck to Andy for the rest of the season, hopefully with Murray junior on the way,i hope it catapults him to success by winning another of the remaining GS this year….

Margot Says:

Big congratulations to Nole and his fans. Incredible.
Big virtual sad hugs to all Andy fans first class especially Kath, RZ, DA and second class especially GG and OK, sorry to miss any folk out.
And to “even CDP” expect you are gnashing your teeth as much as I am about the land of missed opportunity. Not nearly good enough at key moments from Andy. Needs that old 2012 killer instinct again.
Au revoir for now petals xxxxx
GG at least “Poldark” is coming back…;)

J-Kath Says:

Taa Margot……not an excuse…but that Andy guy was tired.
See you at 6-Nations
Go Scotland
Wales, go get England.

BBB Says:

I think there are a lot of positives for Andy to take away, given the duress he was under and how much closer he was in the second and third sets.

Django Says:

Andy played as well as he could under the stress of family troubles, competitive two sets. Next year he just may do it.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Thankfully when it gets to clay and grass the baby will be here anyway,so hopefully no more off court distractions….

RZ Says:

Thanks Margot and also my commiserations to my fellow Andy fans.

I am thrilled at the 2 weeks that Andy had considering how many distractions he had off the court. He is truly a tennis warrior. But I can’t help being very disappointed that Andy couldn’t get the win here.

jalep Says:

And what if one cheered for Andy to win a set. Not quite steerage? ;)

J-Kath Says:

Django/BB/GG

I agree.

RZ
With you.

Gee Says:

Andy struggled to win sets off Nole since 2012, but fed fans talk about fed’s old age since 2008? Lmao!

jane Says:

kudo’s to andy, and commies to his lovely fans here. it still feels like he will win an AO sooner than later.

he was so close to winning sets 2 and 3, his first serves were especially great last night.

the best thing now is he can go home and be with kim for the birth of their baby. my stream stopped just as he stepped up to the mic during the ceremony and given that it was 4:00 am or later i didnt seek out a video of it yet. but my friend told me andy teared up talking of kim, so obviously he’s had her on his mind this whole couple of weeks.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Margot at least Poldark is coming back amen ill drink to that ;))….

J-Kath Says:

Nice message Jane. Enjoy Nole’s victory…well earned.

danica Says:

Good luck Andy!
I hope you are already home with Kim. It must feel great being together again and expecting the big event together. You deserve rest and some down time with your family. I also hope everything will go well and fast when the time comes and you will welcome a beautiful, healthy baby. As for AO, just keep trying and believing.
(Here I am writing as if Andy will actually read this :) ).

Wishing the Murrays all the very best! And good health and long life to Nigel.

Wog Boy Says:

Danica,

I don’t think he could make it to London so quick:) even if he left this morning he will be in London in another 12 hours from now, which is late evening London time.

danica Says:

You are right WB. I kind of forgot how long these flights take specially if there is a stop over.

Wog Boy Says:

Ask me Danica, first leg is a killer, 14 hours from Sydney (Melbourne) to Abu Dhabi (Dubai) and if you are unlucky to sit next to some restless kids, God help you:(

danica Says:

I hate those long flights. It took me once 27 hours to reach San Francisco from Belgrade. I believe I changed three planes. Never again. I will pay double if need be but won’t waste so much time and reach my destination exhausted.
:)

AndyMira Says:

Danica, along with GG,Jane and Okie were the most kind hearted posters on this site..and if there is an award to be given, they’re certainly deserve it..and i said this as if i’m matters to them..he!he!no matter…just touched reading Danica’s wish to andy above..it takes a very big heart to express such a honest comment like that..

Wog Boy Says:

Danica,

It took me 56 hours to make it for my father’s funeral when Yugoslavia was under sanctions in 90s, but I made it and arrived early morning on the day of funeral and it took me another 60 hours to get back to Sydney.

danica Says:

AndyMira,
thank you ;).

WB,
Sorry it had to be such an ordeal :(

AndyMira Says:

You’re welcome Danica..don’t ever change..we can’t buy this thing..it’s a gift..

Wog Boy Says:

Danica,

I would never forgive myself if I didn’t make it.

Gypsy Gal Says:

AndyMira i would put Jalep in there too, plus Margot and J-Kath,and sorry to the men out there as theres also some very nice male posters,Michael,Courbon,Wogboy,Mat4, Nikola, then theres Jatin,Rishi,Squirrel that are all great posters but dont post regulaly,i do miss Grendel and Ajet who vanished unfortunatly….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Kimberly was a great regular poster at one time and a Rafa fan,i miss her posts….

AndyMira Says:

Yeah GG..after i post it,i realized i miss some name too like j kath, margot, jalep,CDP and some others name too..sorry guys..i’m a little bit distracted with my kids at that time.. i thought it’s not fair not to mention this nice people..although i’ve never communicate with some of them,we can know by their writing that they’re have a great heart..nice meeting you guys..

J-Kath Says:

GG- You’re doing a good job monitoring…I think they should offer you an official position. I’ve forgotten where AndyMira comes from…she seems to be very charming and you’re training her well.

I could do with some training too….today I managed to lock myself in and couldn’t get out. I phoned my neighbour to open the door from outside with 2nd house key from my car (which I don’t bother locking.) Then I lost my wallet..1 hour later, found it on the floor of the car….won’t bore U with the rest…

Margot Says:

Oh bless, he’s been booked on flights home for days.
Hope everything at home is OK.

AndyMira Says:

Hmmh..j_kath and GG talking like i’m not exist!Great..

RZ Says:

Jane had posted an AO quiz on another thread, which made me think of this quiz (sorry if I’ve shared it before): Is Andy Murray Happy or Angry? http://graphics.wsj.com/quiz/?standalone=1&slug=murray

MMT Says:

That quiz is brilliant – I got 6 out of 11

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira…..Thank you so much for including me in your list as being a nice poster! That is so sweet! I believe I have gotten farther in life being happy, congenial, and kind rather than being mean spirited and a jerk. It really amuses me that there are some posters on here that don’t really seem to care if you are naughty or nice…..they prefer naughty. When I come into contact with those sorts, I think how miserable in life they must be. I am not posting too much lately and that is the reason why, because that type of attitude tends to make me want to say things that bring me down to their level……I refuse to do so. Have a lovely morning, afternoon, evening or night, whichever the case may be! One more thing there are some posters on here that have lovely dispositions. I enjoy them very much.

@J-Kath……Locking yourself out of the house….I am gonna have to say I think being rattled goes along with the pressure of what you have just gone through in your loss of Walter. I am doing the same thing…..having trouble focusing. It is really weird. Hang in there, have been thinking of you, know that I am concerned. Sincerely, Jan.

RZ Says:

@MMT – I did terribly on it, only got 2 right!

SG1 Says:

Novak just doesn’t give you any room for slow starts or erratic forehands. It’s very hard to call a 3 set match a close one…in my mind anyway. The margins between victory are usually pretty slim at this level of tennis. But, Novak consistently produces better tennis than Andy when it counts…even if only slightly. That slight difference gives Novak the edge.

Novak’s forehand is a little better, his return is a little better, his movement a little better. Even though the margins are slim, they collectively make the difference between consistently winning and not winning.

Novak is a little better than Andy technically so Andy couldn’t afford to play him straight up. Some of Andy’s finals failures are stubbornness. There also seems to be a coaching failure going on here. Why try beating a player from the baseline when their baseline game is better than yours? Mix it up. Do different stuff. Serve and volley once in a while. Hit a bunch of drop shots. Moonballs…flat shots…slices. Don’t let it be a match all about ball striking. Andy can be very creative on the court. He needs to use that aspect of his game.

Okiegal Says:

@Jane……I did send congrats on another thread on Novak’s 11th slam. Didn’t list every fan, but especially to I wanted to single you out. Throw that chest out, girl…..I honestly believe he is on his way up the slam ladder…..He is playing amazing tennis.

@Courbon…..A big congrats to you too! How is the hangover??? LOL

To all die hard Andy fans. I made a comment the other day about seeing at least one match that Novak had some problems with and it was Giles. I want to make it clear that I didn’t intend to diminish the hard fight Andy gave. He had 2 great sets and was no pushover for Novak. I wish he could have had a better first set. Andy had a great two weeks and really played some awesome tennis. I read that post over and really didn’t like how it sounded the second time around. I hope I have redeemed myself if it was offensive for his fans…..please forgive…..don’t like to make waves……

SG1 Says:

8 of 11 on the quiz…lol. Admittedly had to guess most of it.

Markus Says:

I was hoping Andy would win but I did not feel too bad when he lost. As long as he keeps getting his feet out there to have a chance, there’s no losing hope. There’s a baby coming soon and that should give him joy better than a slam title. Maybe the baby will bring with it a slam title or two (or more!) for Andy. If not, he already has two and that’s still a mighty good achievement. But let me continue to hope for more.

As for Djokovic, if he cannot find the love from tennis fans that Federer and Nadal have, he’ll just continue collecting slams and other titles instead.

AndyMira Says:

Hi Okie..very good nite to you..i think you’re already in bed..while i just got back from taking my daughter to school..honestly Okie you’re one of the most kind and warm and very friendly posters here..it’s a shame you very rare post your comment anymore..i could use some friendly gesture myself but i understand what you’re saying..but i bet once rafa back on court..i will see more of you here..i wish..well till we meet next time okie and i will wait for you..have a good dream k?

AndyMira Says:

@Markus 1:18pm,andy is a very talented player and personally i think he deserve more than 2 slam..he’s got almost complete package..his speed is amazing..you can’t slam the ball without him returning back with such winner that sometimes will stunned you to the core..i’m sorry to say this but i think at the moment he’s still searching the inner strength that gave him the gold medal at olympics in 2012 and also at uso..i hope he will find it soon coz father time also approaching very fast..maybe the birth of his baby will give him some inspiration or motivation to keep working for the 3rd,4th slam and so on…

MMT Says:

AndyMira Says: “…maybe the birth of his baby will give him some inspiration or motivation to keep working for the 3rd,4th slam and so on…”

Don’t count on it – nothing kills careers in tennis like spouses and children.

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira…Thanks again. It is almost bedtime for most in OK but I am the night owl so it is usually around 2 or 3 for me! You are a very nice poster too. Hopefully I will post more when Rafa is on the scene again! Things could be worse for Rafa….Yes he did lose in the first round but at least it wasn’t because of an injury!!!

@MMT……Are you sure?? Nothing has been killed for Novak by having a wife and children…..he’s playing better tan ever!!!

AndyMira Says:

MMT..i still believe andy still have it in him to win another slam..he just needs to do some improvement here and there, have self belief that he can beat the big 3,toughen up his mental frailty[i think this aspect affect him most]also he has to learned not to show his emotion too much..when opponent sense that he lose control and vulnerable..he will be eaten alive in no time especially when at the other side is novak..but then this is my honest observation..it’s okay if you don’t agree with it..

AndyMira Says:

Okie!!i thought you’re already zzzz..bout rafa..i’m worried now..the setback at the AO must be hard to swallow..and the old scars is still bleeding..let alone a new one..don’t know how he’s gonna fare in coming month..it’s a pity he should be busy kissing trophy when he’s not injured instead he’s nursing a very dangerous and hidden demon that’s for sure is very hard to conquer and kill..by the way i’m glad you’re still here..

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira 9:17……Agree with this post. Seems as though Rafa is fighting within himself. I wish he would consult with another coach. He is not getting any better, something has got to give!!

AndyMira Says:

Okie..to fight with inner demon is very tough..and rafa has known as a player that got the toughest mental on tour except novak that is..if he still don’t recover from all his problem after his physical injury is healed..that means there’s something big going on in his head..and that’s scary..i just wonder what uncle toni would do or did about it..i know a lot of people said that he lost his famous speed forever but surely uncle toni can find some method to adjust to this new development? They saw this coming long time ago..but unfortunately i think they didn’t do anything about it..

Okiegal Says:

AndyMira…..I don’t know what the answer is……..but I would try a new coach, for starters! He has lost his confidence for sure. He needs to get a grip on things and just go for it…but he needs fresh eyes!

AndyMira Says:

Yes okie..i agree with you except rafa refused the suggestion wholeheartedly..i just hope he will see sense soon..a little bit excited to see how he will perform in the next month or so..

AndyMira Says:

Hey Okie..i think we owe andy’s fan an apology coz without realizing it,we turned andy’s thread to rafa’s thread!Sorry guys..got carried away a little bit..i’m pretty sure if this happen in novak’s thread..we’ll be talking without head now okie! Can you imagine a two owl talking without head..he!he!

Margot Says:

@MMT
I’m hoping that the new baby has the Nole/Fed effect on Andy, rather than, oh I dunno, the Stan effect? Tho Andy is so easily distracted I dunno about that either!
As the top players seem to be lasting longer these days, it’s kind of inevitable that kids will come along. Andy and Kim have been together 10 years and, if Andy intends to play for another 4/5 years, I guess this time is as good as any.
And, if you’re talking about kids ruining the tennis of not quite such successful players, well there’d be a monetary consideration in there too. I’ve read somewhere that the Feds have four nannies. With that sort of support not too much tennis disruption.
And a complete non sequitor…PHEW Trump has had a stumble yay! WTH are you yankees on?

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira 12:10……I guess we did get carried away with Rafa. I am not sure if he will ever be
a hot topic again…..is he slowly slipping away??? I certainly hope not. I am not ready for his career to be over.

J-Kath Says:

Apologies AndyMira, I did not intend to mention you as not being present…as Okiegal knows, my head is askew at the moment…there’s masses of paperwork to do with my husband and difficult to handle the US paperwork on the other side of the “pond”.
Cheers.

AndyMira Says:

Hey Okie..right now,he’s sure gonna be a hot topic but sadly on a negative one..we’ve been supplied with his greatness for many years now and it is very hard to accept otherwise ..but i still believe in him..he’s a natural fighter..he’s been fighting with injuries and pain all his life..and this is one of his many and we have no choice okie other than believe him..as long as he don’t hang up his racket we have hope..hey..nice dream ok?We’ll chat again tomorrow..

AndyMira Says:

@J-Kath,no need to apologize..i’m just teasing you..i’m sorry about everything..it is my greatest wish that someday you will again find happiness or at least find peace in your life..it will takes time but please don’t give up..it’s just around the corner, waiting to be found..nice talking to you j-kath..

J-Kath Says:

Thanks AndyMira.

AndyMira Says:

@J-kath,you’re welcome j-kath..hopefully everything will settle soon and you can amuse yourself once again with some nice people here..

Okiegal Says:

@J-Kath…..You are into paperwork now…..I know where you are coming from. I had always heard that widows can be taken advantage of, especially older ones. I believe it……I was getting the run around on some mutual funds I wanted to move….they didn’t want to turn loose of them……but after phone calls and letters they finally did. I did everything they told me to do and then I would get more correspondence telling me to do something else……never could please them it seemed…..but that’s over!!
Hang tough!!!! Sincerely, Jan.

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira…….Oh, I cant even think about him retiring but he has just got to do something about his inept play….Well, you are right about one thing……as his fans we know he is a fighter!! Love that about him. I hope he is not totally worn himself out!!

J-Kath Says:

Okiegal/Jan – See your problem….my problem with Walter is proving accidental death…Death certificate states “Bladder Haematoma” (he was hit by the door of our own car as he got out in a 90 degree wind). After the scan he was improving then got a hospital chest infection – ended up he couldn’t speak or eat which was devastating.

I mustn’t go on..not fair to other tennis fans.

AndyMira Says:

@J-kath,it’s sad to hear your story..and i’m sure it’s even more so for you..i just hope you’ll hold on over there..it’s not going to hurt forever..

J-Kath Says:

It is true Andy Mira – it changes. It is just it could have been avoided. However, it is what it is – just getting over it is the immediate problem.

AndyMira Says:

@Okie..i don’t know what are you talking about with j-kath but from your words you have similar experience with j-kath,whatever happened,,i’m sorry it happened to you..but please believe you will taste a happiness back someday..just be patient k..it will come to you in the end…i’m sure of it..bout rafa..i think if he still collect a bad losses[especially at FO]and his team still didnt do anything to up his game..i’m so afraid the seeds of retirement will creep in his brain..right now rafa has a self belief issue..he don’t think he can beat novak due to his lack of speed, poor serving, not so sting forehand that used to make his opponent sweats..this things are still in his mind okie that’s why verdasco and fognini can beat him after duelled with him for 4 hours and a half! The old rafa wouldn’t allow anyone defeat him..not in the 1st round..no..this is the reality okie..they have to do something about it and fast..

AndyMira Says:

J-kath..we are a human being..lives on GOD’S earth based on GOD’S script that was written before we even been conceived in our mother”s womb, what we did everyday, what’s going to happen in the future is already been planned for us..we just live our lives as best we could as a human being could..and if something happened, that’s because GOD wants that to happened..whether we want it or not..it will happen anyway..certainly not anyone’s fault..it’s called fate j-kath..and if we accept it,our lives will be much easier without have to question why that’s happened to me..patient is the key..i know it’s hard..and i know you also can get through this..you must..

Okiegal Says:

OMG, J-Kath, I am so sorry. Dealing with insurance on accidental death can be tough. Like I said they don’t want to let go of the money. Stay after them. A horse stumbled with my nephew and injured his spleen. Ins company paid for an autopsy to determine accidental or something else. Ins co paid up…..double, ruled accidental. Sounds like Walters was too. Good luck on this!

Okiegal Says:

@AndyMira……I lost my husband On October 14th due to pancreatic cancer. This is the reason JK and I are having a lot in common as of late.

You are so right about Rafa…..he is in dire need of something…….ASAP!!

AndyMira Says:

@Okie..once again..sorry for your loss..i know nothing i say will make things less easier but it will get better day by day..i just wish you will find some peace and happiness back some time soon..hey rafa will play in argentina at 8th..but david ferrer and tsonga and isner also will be playing..if he win it will boost his confidence back..we will see about it ok?
