Rain hit opening day at the Canadian Open women’s event in Montreal, but several matches were still completed. Among the early winners was former champion Petra Kvitova who crushed Magda Linette 6-1, 6-2.

Earlier, Sam Stosur took care of Heather Watson 7-5, 6-3 and Elina Svitolina beat Jennifer Brady 6-2, 6-4.

Italian Camila Giorgi knocked out Sloane Stephens 7-6(2), 7-6(4) and Daria Gavrilova set a Tuesday date with Simona Halep by defeating Annicka Beck 6-4, 6-3.

Also on Tuesday, we’ll see play from No, 3 seed Garbine Muguruza (v Broady), No. 10 Madison Keys, recent Stanford winner Johanna Konta and Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard who meets Lucie Safarova in a battle of former Top 10ers and Grand Slam finalists.

Last time Bouchard played in Montreal she was stunned just weeks after reaching the Wimbledon final by Shelby Rogers on a Tuesday night.

“I’m not superstitious but I think that the match two years ago was a bit of a nightmare and I wanted to change things up,” Bouchard said. “I love playing at night and I’d be happy to play at any time but they offered me the option to choose and I decided to play in the day.”
