Friends and rivals Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray closed to within one match from a Shanghai Sunday showdown in the finals.

Earlier today, the top seed and defending champion Djokovic overcame a set down to deny qualifier Mischa Zverev 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in 2-hours, 21-minutes.

Djokovic struggled early against the world No. 110 and was down 2-0 in the second before he found his footing.

“I had to dig myself out of a hole,” said Djokovic. “He was the better player for most of the first part of the match. He was up a set and a break, [then] a game away from winning. Tactically played well. He slowed down the pace. I knew his game, but I haven’t played him for many, many years.

“Credit to him, definitely for playing well. He was fighting, he was focused. He gave his best, and he was few points from winning. It was a very close one.”

Djokovic finished with 6 doubles faults, 45 winners and 37 unforced errors. Djokovic now will face Roberta Bautista Agut in the semifinals after the Spaniard surprised 2015 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4.

“Plays very consistently with the slower pace from the baseline,” said Djokovic of RBA who he is 5-0 against. “He’s also somebody that has tremendous anticipation on the court. I think he reads the game very well. He’s a smart player. He’s been playing very well throughout the week. I saw a little bit of his match against Jo today. He’s very solid. He’s not going to give you the win. So I need to obviously earn it.”

In the second semifinal, Murray will meet Gilles Simon. The Scot won his 8th straight match (16th straight set) hammering David Goffin 6-2, 6-2.

“Most games were very close,” said Murray who never lost serve. “He fought hard and saved a number of break points. I had to stay strong there in the second, because physically, although it was a 6-2, 6-2 match, it wasn’t easy because a lot of the points were tough. He plays close up on the baseline, takes the ball early and makes you move a lot.”

Simon had to come from a set down to defeat American Jack Sock 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5). Sock led in the decisive tiebreak 5-4 before dropping the last three points of the match.

85 Comments for Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray Favored To Reach Shanghai Final

AndyMira Says:

If upsets not happen today then they should meet again tomorrow..Can’t wait to see the firecracker, incredible winners and amazing gets from both of them..It’s going to be awesome! Also can’t wait to see how Andy’s gonna fare against Nole this time..Andy played with confidence that i’ve never seen from him before and his scores all week proved that..But to semi finals first..Good luck to all of them!

Van Persie Says:

Should Nole and Andy meet tomorrow, I give Andy 60% on q win. The good thing would be, we could see where Djoko’s form stands.

FedExpress Says:

haha. nole. hahaha

J-Kath Says:

Agut has always been an awkward match-up for Nole…looking a bit dangerous at the moment…….but Nole capable of turning it around.

courbon Says:

I prefer Novak to lose today then get destroyed tomorrow in the final…(-:

courbon Says:

That was intertaining game…and Novak will lose match “properly”….

courbon Says:

Congats to Aout, well deserved win.And Novaks serve is continuing to be weak.Anybody can break him at the moment…eh, ces’la vie.
and for Giles, who will definetely post something in the next hour or so, here is the answer in advance:
p**s off!

Margot Says:

OMG bet nobody saw that coming! Well played RBA but what on earth is up with Nole?
Lol Willow, whatever the outcome of the next semi, you got your wish.

FedExpress Says:

lol moment. i thought nole wants to enjoy tennis more. it didnt seem like it. arguing with umpire, racquet destruction…
nole is an actor and a hypocrite

Van Persie Says:

Expected that, but hoped I was wrong. Courbon, agree :)

Giles Says:

That was a well deserved loss by joker.
Well done Agut. Hope he wins the whole thing!
Vamos Agut! ✔️

Giles Says:

Thank goodness we were spared the boob throwing celebration! 🤓

AndyMira Says:

Congrats to both Agut and Nole for an amazing match..And Nole..oh my God!4 incredible match point save! What a great champion he is..he’s not going easily without a fight..Sorry Dani[The saint] and VP for your loss..

J-Kath Says:

I expected the match to be very tough but expected Nole to squeak thru. And, he forgot to sing, hum and let rip instead – he’s been watching Kyrios too much!

Seriously, has he still got physical problems?

J-Kath Says:

Margot

Also slightly anxious about next match. Andy will need to be at his best. Simon makes you work hard.

Giles Says:

I believe the barbarian displayed some fierce racket smashing skills as well. Lol

Van Persie Says:

Nole smashed racket? Lol. So, a bit of the old Djoko was back then.;) Am out of town, did not watch it.
J-K, please do not compare him with Kyrgios. Smashing racket is more Sascha’s style. :)

Margot Says:

Sure Kath, but, at the end of the day, Geeloo is a less good Andy. If “real Andy” turns up and not some error strewn imposter, should be OK.
Still reeling from semi shocker TBH.
Just read Andy is also playing Vienna. Really chasing No 1 spot now. It would be a great finale to his career.
Let’s Go Andy! Let’s Go!

J-Kath Says:

VP: Sorri – if it had been Andy I’d have said the same thing. But I apologize as I didn’t mean to upset anyone.

J-Kath Says:

Gosh Margot: Isn’t Andy over-doing it? Vienna ends 30th Oct. and Paris starts 31st!

Ah well – we’ll just have to wait and see.

FedExpress Says:

some comments from nole in the presser. Hahahaha. mentally he is gone. looking for excuses.

courbon Says:

VP:Well, he said that he wants to enjoy tennis again and smashing rackets is part of it!

courbon Says:

and in another news, Andy is having another great performance. If he continues like this, I can see him winning Paris and ATP Final..unless there is a feather or butterfly on the court, then who knows…

Giles Says:

He’ll probably arrive at the WTF all burnt out same as a couple of years ago. AM that is.

J-Kath Says:

Gosh Andy was brilliant and he was sloppy too. He needs to get a better grip tomorrow.

Margot Says:

A bit iffy in the first, much better in the second including FSP which got to 73.
Gosh Giles, what a little ray of sunshine you are. Andy was “burnt out” because, after slipping down in the rankings due to back op, he was playing every Tom, Dick and Harry tournament he could, in order to qualify.

Van Persie Says:

JK, U did not upset me, I just don’t like Kyrgios lately. Smashing rackets is a sign of frustration, passion or volatility, and not a sign of disrespect toward oponent or spectators. Always liked guys like John Mc, Nastase (what I have seen on Youtube, did not watch theyr matches, when they played), or others.
Courbon, perhaps it is a good sign for next tournaments, we’ll see.

Congrats to Andy and his fans! Am sure, Bautista is not greatest challenge tomorrow, but bigger challenge then Novak atm :)

Giles Says:

Margot. I speak the truth. Take it or leave it!!!
Eeeeek!

AndyMira Says:

Congrats to darling Andy for his 6th,7th final?I predict,he maybe a little bit sloppy again tomorrow,he will be nervous for sure..not easy to handle a feeling that you’ve got a big chance to kiss another ATP 1000 masters..But,i think he has no trouble to wrap it up in the end..Insyaallah..

J-Kath Says:

OK Van Persie

I confess I still am OK with Kyrgios – his worst escapade was the taunting of Stan Waw. The rest – he needs a big brother who understands tennis pressure – and both Andy and Nole have offered chit-chats with him.

Thanks for the congrats. Agut is on a huge high – so Andy needs to take him very, very seriously.

courbon Says:

Congrats to Andy fans!

Van Persie Says:

JK, we all do have our “weaknesses”. Perhaps he will change. He should only know, that , yes, Tennis needs him, but can also survive very fine without him.

Van Persie Says:

AM, thanks for the comiserations, but, well, was expected :) Am off now

AndyMira Says:

@VP..Anything for you sis!Btw..How are you?

theDA Says:

Hey Margot! Our boy did good. It’s almost surreal experiencing his consistent successes this year, isn’t it?. And poor Novak clearly needs a break to recalibrate. The supposed new zen attitude is still a work in progress. Nothing surprising about a let-down after 2015 & first 5 months this year. I look forward to Mat4′s insights. He wrote an interesting blog post explaining why it wasn’t surprising for Novak to have struggled against the world No 110 yesterday.

Anyhow, this is turning into a very thrilling conclusion of the season.

Margot Says:

Hi DA!
Indeedy, I think he’s playing as good as ever, back to pre-op form. Brilliant to see.
Let’s Go!

Willow Says:

Courbon didnt see the match, and im sorry for your guy, something aint right there, and i dont know what, maybe its this coaching thing, was Novak that bad or was RBA that good curious , yesterday i expected a wake up call and for Novak to win handily, WTF ???? ….

Giles Says:

He’s lovesick, dreaming of Deepika! ROFL

Daniel Says:

Boy, I did mot see that coming. Better lose and be pissed off than lose “gracefully”, passive.

Hope this loss fire him up for Paris and WTF because of Murray wins Shangai, as he will in straight sets he will be less than 1000 race points from Novak, 940 if I am not mistaken. Race could ve defined in Lindon if Murray fares better than Novak in Paris again.

Giles Says:

See Daniel? You never know what’s around the corner!
That’s what you get for counting chickens. Lol

Van Persie Says:

Better suffering from lovesick for Deepika, than for the “brown eye” , Giles ;)
Sorry nice Rafans, this was just for Giles.

AM, am on a tripp

Giles Says:

VP. Sorry don’t understand. ” brown eye”??

Van Persie Says:

It is the place, where you may stick your finger now;)

Willow Says:

YUCK You too get a room urgh ….

AndyMira Says:

@VP,Giles…Ha ha ha..You guys chill a little bit okay?

Giles Says:

I do believe VP is trying to be crude. Shame on you.

J-Kath Says:

Daniel: Murray planning on the No.1 challenge 2017 according to him….(of course I’m sure he wouldn’nt mind if the stars align before that).

Okiegal Says:

CONGRATS Andy fans………he is in another final…..having a stellar year, that guy! Good for him….take it all Andy……CMON!

jalep Says:

Andy Murray will have 9685 after he wins Shanghai. Even if he doesn’t win Shanghai, he will have 9685 in the live race; To London.
http://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-race

Nole will have 10600 in the live race after Shanghai. Subtract and you get? 915 points difference between Nole and Andy, in the ballpark as Daniel, of course, already knew.

But Andy truly is going for it because he’s playing Vienna. Vienna for 500 points, then, the same as Nole Paris and WTF.

Andy wins Vienna while Nole is regrouping and it closes the gap to what…10,185 for Andy and 10,600 for Nole going into Paris!!! Yikes.
Andy has a paltry 200 points to defend at WTF.

AndyMira Says:

@Jalep..Great stats and summary up there..Wow!4 months ago, never in a million years would i imagine that Andy can close a massive gap with The Great Novak this rapidly..Oh wow..The competition between them sure is gonna get very intense for the next 3 months..Oh God,very excited for him and his loyal fans..

jalep Says:

Thank-you, AndyMira.

And I got it right. That doesn’t always happen! 🤦 I’m notorious for some real bloopers when I delve into Race Ranking but this link is the right one to use:
http://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-race

You will see the numbers are true. Novak at 10600 and Andy at 9685.
Vienna is coming up and Andy should just keep rolling = 500 points while Novak continues to practice and hopefully get it together for Paris.

Novak needs to defend his title in Paris. Can he, is he ready to fight for it?

Because, as mentioned, going into Paris, Andy with the Vienna title, will be up to 10,185. Nole will still be at 10,600. Paris will really matter for either of them wanting to end the year #1. It might only be difference of 415 between them. The stakes are HIGH.

Van Persie Says:

Giles, I took a shut. Hihi :)

jalep Says:

Margot, you edged me in all brackets, plus, your man won, spectacularly 👍 🏆 Congrats

Important win for Cibby in Linz, too!
look:

Margot Says:

Thank you jalep :)
You’ve got me hooked, I’ve entered ALL the rest! Only shame is we can’t chat there.
Cheers m’dear.

Margot Says:

And Very Happy Birthday for yesterday and to Skeeze too.

Giles Says:

I see the bloke from down under is conspicuous by his absence. Hiding in the woodwork no doubt. Hehe

jalep Says:

The bigger deal is that the police found my car the day before my birthday. It had been stolen and I thought lost for nearly three weeks. Very relieved.

It is a pity there’s no comment section there. I’m popping over more here the last couple weeks – to post a word or two about it. We could chat all we wanted about it over on the WTA page on Tenngrand – use a new moniker…lol…nevermind me.

You’ve got to check out this page though. Notice where the little welshwitch is in the LINZ column?
http://www.tennisdrawchallenge.com/standings/wta

That’s some hardcore tennis picking 🙃

AndyMira Says:

@Jalep..Happy Birthday sis! Here’s *clink, clink* with my watermelon juice glass..

J-Kath Says:

Giles

He may still be in Wales.
But where is “the Travis”?

jalep Says:

Thanks AndyMira. It was yesterday and a very fine B-day indeed. Cheers! :)

J-Kath Says:

Jalep

The return of your car. Whew! Great birthday present. Have a happy day.

PS: Other subjects rear their heads in the tennis “dry” season. I’m one of the worst offenders – but sometimes the subject matter is related to tennis e.g. Kyrios getting the Award for Best Behaviour etc.

J-Kath Says:

At last Margot, I’m raising my glass to Andy – it’s “the water of life” with loads of ice.

jalep Says:

It was happy — cried and cried tears of relief, J-Kath. Thanks, JK

Not sure what you are talking about being a worst offender?

I’m squarely on Team Nick. Yes, he can be an appalling spoiled brat in an interview. But his heart is in the right place — he’s sorry.

J-Kath Says:

Jalep – I’m one of the worst offenders who introduces subjects on Tennis X which are not strictly tennis.

PS: I’m also on Team Nick – but I make (bad) jokes about players I like as well!

jalep Says:

I don’t care about subjects other than tennis on TX. JK. Never have.

My posts are mainly about tennis (WTA) because I’m deep into it. lol…I doubt it’s all that interesting to posters here but there’s a few that like it, I think. That’s all I need for encouragement.

jalep Says:

You may remember me complaining about GOAT, Fedal Wars, and arbitrary, cult-like rules/philosophies for entrance into fan groups. But I’m over it. I don’t engage. It doesn’t interest me.

Giles Says:

Not a good time for joker fans to go AWOL. Come on out you scaredy cats and face the music. You are allowed the choice of music. 😉😜🎻 🎹 🎷 🎼

jalep Says:

Finally – have to go. But if you watched Shanghai, you may have this and some other 80′s tunes in your head:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv6tuzHUuuk

Willow Says:

That makes two of us Jalep, i actually used to be a Federer fan before Rafa came along, but i never cared about his GS count, or surpassing anyone or being the greatest, i just liked the beautiful tennis he played, i just found Nadal more appealing for his heart and determination, and that never say die attitude, i always found it much more enjoyable to have a number of greats rather than one GOAT, but thats just me, theres no right or wrong answer, only a matter of preferance ….

Willow Says:

J-Kath @12.37 pm each to their own ….

Willow Says:

Jalep sorry about your car, but happy you got it back, such scumbags some people, loved the Bangles BTW ….

J-Kath Says:

Willow: The absence of Nole fans e.g. Travis! It could have been very interesting. Yes/No? I do find it strange not to see some of Nole’s fans – this period has not only been about Andy. I would have thought it would have encouraged wider tennis views…..!!!??

Jalep – GOAT competition and such like is what gets boring…which happens also in the off-tennis season – so it’s a bit of a relief when another subject takes off…which usually starts with a tennis comment and then takes off.

Willow Says:

J-Kath hmm not really sure what to say there, some months ago it was like a Novak fan club here, i blogged a little less, as i felt that being a fan of another player meant you were getting in the way, granted it was the same when Rafa had his great year in 2013, although even then Novak did finish the year strongly, now Andys on a streak and Novaks on a bit of a slump its gone a bit quieter, fans of all fan bases have a knack of coming and going depending on the success of their favorites, and this is not merely exclusive to any one fan base either, one fan said some months back this was a diverse site, well it never has been diverse, and it never will be ….

Willow Says:

To add, i think the difference is, that Murray is actually now becoming something of a threat to the number 1 ranking for the first time, it was easy to be nice before, but not so easy though now ….

jalep Says:

Giles, you are priceless. “Boob throwing celebration” LMAO ; Can’t stand it either. Finally read the entire thread.

Sent you an email Willow 😉 thanks for sincere well-wishes.

Willow Says:

Jalep yeah just read them cheers, i will sent you a reply when i have more energy, and can think straight, as im so tired right now ;-)), CHEERS DARLING ….

J-Kath Says:

Willow:

Understand what you are saying. However, up to now we’ve had a variety of posters with different favourite players and we all contributed views and articles. There were fans of Rafa, Andy and a lot of Nole fans plus others who were newsworthy in one way or another and collectively we contributed to various threads and posted articles of interest….

…..there were also dismissive comments made…depending on who wanted to dismiss what somebody else said.

Part of the reason I asked where Travis was etc. was my surprise that all of this has vanished….I would have liked to hear what Travis and others were thinking re. Nole vs. Andy etc. Levels of justification etc. etc.

I find this very disappointing and I’m seriously not sure I want to continue to read and post on Tennis X any more.

Enjoy Poldark which has just started. Cheers K.

RZ Says:

@Jalep – happy belated birthday and glad you got your car back!

Van Persie Says:

JK,

Well, it was Sunday…on the other hand, I had the same feeling after the FO as you have now. A lot of posters disappeared, from all fan bases…it is only a tennis site after all :)

Willow Says:

J-Kath i hope you dont as i would miss you, and i certainly didnt mean to offend you if i did, as i know we have always got along well, and i know you like to interact with him, and thats entirely your choice my dear, and he has a good tennis brain, and is very clever and knowledgeable dont get me wrong, i just never cared for being insulted personally, so i wont welcome him back with open arms sorry, maybe if you take a break for a while, as i know blogging can get quite emotional at times, and can be quite draining ….

GODDESS BLESSINGS, AND TAKE CARE LOVE WILLOW, AND HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN SOON ;-)) ….

J-Kath Says:

Willow:

I didn’t take offence. I thought you actually might enjoy a “now I’ve got you back” as he attempts to justify the unjustifiable – I was looking for a wee laugh.

Apart from an individual I was disappointed that a number of posters simply didn’t comment when the competition (ie Andy) became such a key factor of interest.

Have to go now – Ciao.

J-Kath Says:

VP:

Agree re. big picture – but I felt poor old Andy he just doesn’t generate much interest. Oddly enuf Tennis.com which I don’t post on but sometimes flick thru was the opposite – and it looked almost pro-Andy for a change.

I really have to go – cheers.

Van Persie Says:

Get your point, JK .

I never read Tennis. com, as I know how much “respect” Tignor has for Novak :)…and to be honest, I really like some Novak fans from here. Why some of them did not react these days, it’s their problem…but I think, they will be more active during Paris and YEC.

Cheers back!
