A monster first day at Wimbledon features Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Marin Cilic and many more.

Murray will play 20-year-old trick shot artist Alexander Bublik. The Scot who announced he and wife Kim are expecting a second child, is not worried about a sore hip from earlier in the week.

“The last few days have been very good,” he said. “Practice each day has got a little bit better. It’s been slightly stop-start preparations, but each day I’ve felt better.

“But a little bit like at the French Open, where maybe I didn’t come in as well prepared, I still found a way with each match to feel a bit better, and built confidence each day. So, you know, I’m hoping that’s the case here.”

“I’ll be fine to play the event and play seven matches,” Murray said. “If I feel like I am today, I’d be delighted and have no issues getting through.

“You know, if necessary, I can take some anti-inflammatories if my hip flares up. Hopefully that’s not the case.”

Nadal faces Australian John Millman as he tries to win his first grass match in two years since beating Thomaz Bellucci in 2015.

Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Nick Kyrgios, Denis Shapovalov and Stan Wawrinka who is bidding for a career Slam are also in action on a full day of 32 matches from the top half of the men’s draw.

Colin Says:

I’ve mentioned Andy’s domestic news in a couple of other places, so I may as well repeat my thoughts here.

Whatever has been the case with some other players, I think Andy’s personal life is a very positive influence on his attitude on the court. He should be feeling happy and ready to enjoy playing, which is good for a person whose problems have often been in his head.

I just hope Bublik isn’t another Dustin Brown who might beat anyone on a lucky day!

Colin Says:

Those of us who watch Wimbledon online or on BBC TV will as usual hear plenty from former player Sam Smith. She isn’t inspiring, any more than is Sue Barker, but she can contribute useful analysis of what’s happening on court. I just wish somebody (come on, BBC)would tell her there is no such word as “laxadaisical”. Once upon a time the Beeb set a standard for correct English. Those were the days!

Van orten Says:

Nick seems again injured vs Herbert

Nits Says:

Kyrgios two sets down

thark Says:

Wow, a disappointing start from The Fresh Prince of Canberra…

Nits Says:

Unfortunate!!!

J-Kath Says:

Colin: “no such word as “laxadaisical”. Really!

Margot Says:

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/lackadaisical
Certainly is, but not spelt with an “X.”
Naughty Nick retired injured, having said he could win, of course.
Andy looking good but that chump bouncy is on and on about him limping. Jeez Louise :(
Think Venus is, understandably, a bit distracted.

Daniel Says:

Kyrgios out. First surprise of day 1.

Checking scores and Murray 4-1. Good sign. Hope he wins as fast an easy as possible.

J-Kath Says:

Margot: That “chumpy bouncy” got his mouth shut by Boris when he asked him what did he tell Nole to do when playing Andy etc.

Colin Says:

Rain, and the covers are on. I hope it’s not for long, and that there is no wet patches when they return. The last thing Andy needs is a heavy fall.

Margo, you’re cheating. You might as well say there is such a word as Kilowhat, or maybe Lackative.

Margot Says:

Oooooh Colin, so keen on correct spelling and look what you did to my name….tsk…tsk…

Anto Says:

Nadal started good. Now double break up. 4-1.

RZ Says:

(Shhh, don’t tell Margot that I watched the 3rd set of Andy’s match). I feel better about my own tennis game after watching Bublik. It’s always good to know that it’s not just us wannabes but also the pros who attempt shots they shouldn’t be hitting and mess it up completely.

RZ Says:

As for Kyrgios, no idea why he showed up if he wasn’t fit to play. Maybe he just wanted to mess up our racquet brackets.

Anto Says:

Wow nadal won the first set he played on grass in nearly two years 6-1.

Van orten Says:

Wow nadal plays so good against the milkman

Humble Rafa Says:

I am impressed with my game on grass. This is like 2008.

J-Kath Says:

Wow! Whoever said that Rafa was less good on grass needs to go to SpecSavers.

Humble Rafa Says:

I should take the milkman (credit to Van Dam) wherever I go. If anyone, he makes me good and will bring milk.

Anto Says:

Rafa took the second set 6-3. Nice going Rafa.

Humble Rafa Says:

Today, the courts are awesome. I am glad I got to play on it before the grass is affected by cancer.

Humble Rafa Says:

Kyrgios out. First surprise of day 1.

As predictable as Wimbledon weather. No surprise there.

Humble Rafa Says:

Pointing out grammatical errors on BBC.

FO 2017: Rafa becomes first MAN to win 10 majors.

Man must be capitalized.

Humble Rafa Says:

Happenings at Wimbledon

256 men will be halved at the end of day 2.

Feel free to attend the halfing ceremony with your family.

Anto Says:

Such a good first match by Rafa.

Margot Says:

But, but, but RZ, you always go camping in the wilderness when Andy plays. What IS going on?

Truth Says:

According to Fedal floons, Kyrgios’s superior to Djoker. That means Roddick’s superior too.
Roddick never beat Fed in any Slam when Fed wished to lose. Fed never beat Nadal at the French Open or US Open, which means Fed is the best ever!

Radio & TV channels fired many employees. Too bad they hired cheap but expensive Fed cheerleaders like McEnroe brothers, Roddick & Brad Gilbert.
It was just pitiful that one commentator was wrongly fired for saying the word guerilla because the viewers were scared that guerilla was an animal.

t4t Says:

Looks like it will be Andy vs Rafa in the semi.Roger has a cakewalk draw so cannot see anyone stopping him from reachinmg the semi. Nole looks almost like his old self. Let us see how he plays tomorrow.

RZ Says:

We have 35 racquet bracket entries! (Some people did more than one bracket). Here are some stats from the bracket entries:

Predicted to be in the final:
R. Federer 23
R. Nadal 15
A. Murray 9
N. Djokovic 6
S. Wawrinka 5
M. Cilic 4
T. Berdych 3
G. Dimitrov 2
N. Kyrgios 2
D. Thiem 1
(That wasn’t me picking Thiem in the final – I’m a disloyal Team Thiem leader and have him going out in the first round)

Predicted champion:
R. Federer 16
A. Murray 5
S. Wawrinka 5
R. Nadal 4
N. Djokovic 4
G. Dimitrov 1

Daniel Says:

Wawrinka already down 2 sets to 1. Risking getting out first round.

J-Kath Says:

Doesn’t look like Wawrinka – 2 to 1 sets down will achieve predictions. The Daniil Medvedez (if that’s how you spell his name) (one of my new gen. players) looks like may beat Stan -though still a bit to go…..

RZ Says:

I read that Stan has been icing his knee and has asked for ice to be available later as well. Doesn’t bode well for the tournament even if he pulls it out here.

Margot Says:

Kath and RZ: Friend and I saw Medlevev at Queens, up close and personal on the practise court, we didn’t know who he was! He is soooo skinny! Also saw him play a match, which he lost. He’s shooting up the rankings like a rocket.
Rather a short coaching stint for Annacone, back to the commentary box for him.

RZ Says:

Stanimal is out. Shame about his injury and he certainly did not get any help by drawing Medvedev in the first round. I didn’t expect him to win here, but it was a good sign that he had hired Paul Annacone to help him on the grass. The career slam attempt will need to wait till next year.

RZ Says:

@Margot – you can be one of those people who say things like “I’ve been following his career since he was just a skinny little kid”

J.S. Says:

RZ is it to late to join the bracket?
UGH – so mad I missed it!~

Margot Says:

Lol RZ, he’s a “skinny little kid” but he’s “my skinny little kid.”
Andy was similarly skinny once…..sigh…

Margot Says:

He had face fuzz at Queens too. Looks so much better without it, has such a sweet face.

RZ Says:

@J.S. – yes, sorry. The bracket closes when play begins. But on the bright side, we have no idea who you would have picked, so you can claim that you had Stan and Nick going out in the first round. :-)

RZ Says:

Is Bedene a big server? The score from his/Dr. Ivo’s match is crazy!

J.S. Says:

Haha RZ – I did, how did you know??
Picked Rafa to win it all too…..CHAMP RAFA!

Okay, I won’t be late to the party next time!

Happy Wimbledon everyone!

Sirius Says:

I picked Stanimal to win Wimbledon beating T-bird in the final! Lol

J-Kath Says:

Margot
& RZ

Have been a fan of the Medvedev since Queens – so you (M.) actually saw him)!!! and also liked him…great minds etc. Did actually mention him here before but nobody else bought into it.

Am off tomorrow at 9.ish am and shan’t be back until Sunday night 9.oopm so won’t be posting….hopefully will see some matches with outcomes of which we both approve.

Fingers crossed for……..?

RZ Says:

Safe travels J-Kath!

Wog Boy Says:

JK,

It’s Medvedev, which means Bear in Russian and most Slavic languages, though he looks nothing like a bear.
Btw, I agreed with you about him after Nole’s match at Eastburn, but you probably missed my post.

Wog Boy Says:

This is what I posted about Medvedev after Nole’s match:

“Medvedev looked good to me, pick ups ball early, good serve, flat deep hitting from both wings, quick hands, good mover, he might do well with a good team.
One thing they both have in common, their OHs are the same, atrocious:)”

J-Kath Says:

Seeyah Wogboy:

Off to bed in a minute but sorri I missed your posting. I thought I got my spelling of Medvedev correct but didn’t know it meant Bear – his character seems more like a gentle Rotweiler who knows when to show his teeth and when he does, hangs on. Not a very good metaphor – ah well – brain-dead time for me.
