Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer inched closer to a Sunday showdown in Shanghai. Earlier today, Nadal improved his current win streak to 14 after cruising past Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-1.

“I played a very good match. I don’t know how many mistakes, how many unforced errors, but very few. And I played very well in all aspects,” Nadal said. “I have been doing things very well. So otherwise, of course, big result, 6-3, 6-1 against a player like him that he can winning Verdasco and Pouille, two good matches, for sure today is a very good result for me, and being in quarterfinals of course is great news.”

Nadal, who has never won Beijing, now gets another look at Grigor Dimitrov, who ended Sam Querrey’s hopes. Nadal leads the Bulgarian 9-1. Both prior meeting this year at the Australian Open and Beijing last week went the distance.

“I gonna have a tough match against Grigor,” Nadal said. “I know I have to play my best if I want to keep having chances of success. I hope to be ready to do it, because I am playing well.”

Dimitrov is 1-8 against World No. 1s, defeating Novak Djokovic in the at the 2013 Madrid Masters.

Roger Federer kept pace defeating Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-2. Federer now faces Richard Gasquet who he leads 15-2 and 9-0 on hard courts.

“I like playing Gasquet on fast courts,” Federer said. “I hope I can again put in a similar performance like today.”

In the marquee match of the day, Juan Martin del Potro eliminated Alexander Zverev 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

“I think he played a great match, maybe one of the best of the season,” said Zverev. “I think we both played pretty well from the baseline. I don’t know what I could have done better, but for me.”

Del Potro moves on to meet Viktor Troicki who ousted John Isner 6-4, 7-6(6).

“One of my goals for the next year is just to play a whole year — around 20, 22 tournaments would be great for me,” said del Potro. “If my level continues improving, I will get closer to the top guys. But it’s not easy. I have made a big effort after all my injuries to play tennis, but I think I’m doing well.”

The Argentine is a perfect 6-0 against Troicki.

Also, Marin Cilic will meet Alberto Ramos Vinolas in the quarters tomorrow.

In sum, four of the top six seeds made the last eight in Shanghai.

FedExpress Says:

Uselessness has a new name…Dimitrov.

Willow Says:

I Dont think Dimis playing badly, commies said hes doing everything he can here, its just Rafas just streets above everyone else at the moment, all bar Federer whos also playing exceptional tennis ….

FedExpress Says:

Dimi cant return to save his life.

squirrel Says:

Agree with Willow, Dimi is playing very well, Rafa is just a level above…although it’s not over yet, TB!

squirrel Says:

Dimi is stepping up, let’s see. Rafa is still looking better and in control.

FedExpress Says:

good mental fight from Dimi. But what a mental collapse from Nadal.

squirrel Says:

Dimi won the TB, when was the last time Rafa lost a set? Agaisnt Pouille I guess but seems a long time ago.

FedExpress Says:

But Dimi will fade away in the 3rd set.

squirrel Says:

Maybe not… The only time he beat Nadal was here..so there might be a mental edge there and like you said, Rafa collapsed a bit at the end there, faitgue maybe? This is the time for Dimi to prove himself, otherwise, he’ll be like Berdych…

Willow Says:

Hi Squirrel I Have to go to the dentist soon, damn was hoping Rafa would do this in two, hoping for the best, but if its not to be, its not to be, good luck to Fed ;-) ….

Giles Says:

FE. Skipped school today?

squirrel Says:

Hi Willow, nice seeing you comment and tx lively again, but alas you had to leave. Don’t worry, I keep Rafa company and will be cheering for him on your part. I’m pretty sure he’ll still win. Thannk you for your wish for Fed, so sweet of you. Same to Rafa, clinching a no 1 year-end is so near for him , you must be stoked! :) Good luck at the dentist (I hate dentist, hehe)

FedExpress Says:

@squirrel

Didnt Dimi beat Nadal in Beijing last year?

squirrel Says:

Oh sorry, you’re right FE, I thought it was Shanghai. Well then, no mental advantage! hehe.

What’s your prediction?

FedExpress Says:

Nadal will slug it out. High confidence.

FedExpress Says:

I dont back Dimi after last weeks encounter and serving 2nd in the decider.

FedExpress Says:

Deuce after being 40-15 up.

squirrel Says:

True, serving second doesn’t bode well for him. Nadal will push and push and eventually win surely. Rafa-Fed final would be awesome!!

FedExpress Says:

Dimi on fire atm. Got BP. Now deuce

squirrel Says:

Nice couple of points by Dimi but couldn’t convert, this might haunt him as Rafa looks to be even more pumped up!

FedExpress Says:

Dimi, 2nd serve and then you do this.

3-2 Nadal

Interesting to see how Dimi will respond. Most of the times it goes downhill from here on.

Just like the AO semi this year. Had BPs int he decider, couldnt convert and got broken in the next game.

squirrel Says:

True, AO semi this year was painful to watch for him but I think he looks more comfortable here (smaller occasion, less pressure), we’ll see.

FedExpress Says:

BP Nadal. Never change Dimi.

squirrel Says:

BP Rafa!

FedExpress Says:

You mental midget Dimi. So expected.

GSM Nadal now.

squirrel Says:

Rafa converted as Dimi crumbled. You’re so right FE!

squirrel Says:

Same story every time, it’s got to be embarrasing for him.

FedExpress Says:

2 DFs and 2 UEs in the game where he got broken.

FedExpress Says:

5-3

too late Dimi.

squirrel Says:

Rafa to the semi to face Cilic, that would be a good match!

FE, now, we can enjoy our Fed!

FedExpress Says:

Lol Dimi. The three last points after 15-15.

Better player won in the end. Dimi has problems to take advantage of the momentum he gets after he wins a set. Same with Federer at the USO and 2 other losses this year.

FedExpress Says:

Isnt Fed’s match in two hours or so squirrel?

squirrel Says:

Oh yeah, sucks. Del Potro vs Troicki first. I guess I’ll have my lunch break now and be back for Fed! Can’t wait!

Wog Boy Says:

Delpo looked tired today plus he injured his left wrist in the third set, didn’t look good. There is a good chance he’ll do WO in the semis.

Willow Says:

I Wouldnt be at all surprised if Delpo pulled out, Annabelle Croft was saying, she things they should change the rules and bring back the lucky loser, so it doesnt rob the tournament of matches ….

squirrel Says:

Yeah totally agree Willow, it’s stupid that he gave it all to win that QF to only be absent in the next round..

Btw, I like Annabelle Croft as a commentator, although she also favors Rafa over Fed, hehe

Willow Says:

Viktor has played really well this week, theres not many players on tour that can break the Isner serve, even though Isners been returning better latly, hes still poor compared to alot of players on tour ….

t4t Says:

What a confused post from Bullow, the bully.. (@9:12 am)

Daniel Says:

So, Dimi lost another decider to Nadal. Missed all the action, dawn for me.

Gald DelPo is through, hope Fed wins and we have a USO revenge.

Fed serving now for first set, Gasquet giving him more problems than I though, a lot of close games. Set closed.

t4t Says:

wog boy @ 8:19 am
Things are going as per plan. The draw was made to ensure that Fed waltzes fresh as a daisy to the final. A cupcake 4th quarter. A stacked 3rd quarter so whoever emerges would be gassed. Upper half filled with those who have been known to trouble Nadal in the past. In fact the Shanghai draw for Nadal used almost the same template as Beijing. It is a shame the way the ATP openly flaunts its servitude to Fed.

Daniel Says:

Fed breaking Gasquet to love. wrap this up fast and go rest.

Daniel Says:

Broke back. Bad game for Fed, bad choices.

squirrel Says:

Yeah, bad service game by Fed. He always too laid-back at the start of a second set when he won the first.

Daniel Says:

Fed wins and seems rested the whole week.

If DelPo isn’t able to ply, and even if he does he will not be hitting too many VBH’s so Fed is virtually in another final.

Question is if Cilic will challenge Nadal or we’ll have the resume of Fedal this year.

Also if Nadal reaches finals curious to see if he will keep his schedule and play Basel. I know Nadal is a momentum player and likes to play a lot, but the chance he will deep in Basel is also high and he will have Paris (which he never won) following week. Maybe he will skip it to focus on Paris, or play Basel and puts pressure on Federer.

If Nadal wins Shangai, most likely beating Fed in finals, year end race is finished. Fed would have to win Basel / Paris and WTF and Nadal only win 300 pts in these 3 tourneys, not gonna happen.

So, the Shangai final result can wrap year end #1 for good or keep Fed’s chance alive.

FedExpress Says:

@t4t

Should I talk about Nadal’s USO draw?

STFU!

RZ Says:

Shanghai tidbit: All 4 singles semifinalists and all 4 doubles team semifinalists are slam holders. Don’t think we see it too often when the semifinalists in singles and doubles all hold major titles.

Daniel Says:

Also, Nadal won’t be able to get points from Basel unless he wins it. As he played all 9 Maters he is only allowed to count 3 ATP 500 tourney. He already has title in Barcelona and Beijing and 300 points finals in Basel. So, he can only gain points in Basel if he wins it.

Giles Says:

^^^ 300 pts finals in Basel was in 2015. So explain yourself please

Giles Says:

Looking like a walkover for LUCKY fed!, 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

kjb Says:

@giles

I think he meant Mexico. He lost the final to Querrey.

gonzalowski Says:

The doctor has said that Del Potro has a traumatic left wrist and “more serious problems were ruled out.” The doctors put a splint to immobilize the area and tomorrow he will decide if he’s playing against the Swiss.

Willow Says:

t4t @ 9.15am, its pretty simple, if you dont care for my posts then skip them, it really makes no difference to me what-so-ever, unlike others here i wont be honey trapped into a quarrel with you, so your wasting your time ….

gonzalowski Says:

Le Monde, today:
https://www.la-croix.com/Nadal-demande-100-000-euros-Bachelot-avoir-accuse-dopage-2017-10-13-1300884092

“Tennis player Rafael Nadal this Friday has filed a lawsuit against former Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot, asking him by proxy lawyers 100,000 euros in damages for having accused him of doping in a television program last year”
Judgment on 16 November.

Daniel Says:

Giles, kjb Is right,

Nadal already played 3 ATP 500 (won Beijing, barca and final in Acapulco). As he played MC which is the ninth Masters (non mandatory) it replaces one of the 4 ATP 500 that can be acountable for points.

So, for Nadal which already played 8 matechs on last 2 weeks, will play another tomorrow and potential finalmvs ged to play Basel won’t be wise. He can only gain points there (2″0 ) if he wins it. And even if he has the “stop Fed for gaining pookts” mindset, they can only meet in finals.

All fo this of course if Fed wins Shangai. Nadal will have a chance to wrap up Year end in Paris.

He needs 11.500 pts so Fed would be out of reach.

He has 9865 + this week minimum semis 360 = 10225 pts.

Dave Says:

Daniel,

It says the best 6 results from 500 and 250 events. It doesn’t say anything about not being able to count 4 events that are 500. I don’t see any way Nadal would schedule a 500 event that he couldn’t count all the points for. The only top player that seems to keep playing over the limit is Thiem. Nadal has only played 1 event that’s a 250 event. So I don’t agree with your calculations.

Dave Says:

So even if you count the 9th masters 1000 event. It still only adds up to six in total. 4 events 500. 1 that was a 250 and one 1000. in the rules on the atp sight it doesn’t say anything about how many need to be 250′s or 500′s. Since Nadal skipped the grass season, his total will be 6 for the year.

Dave Says:

The only 250 even I remember Nadal playing was a warmup for the Australian Open. I don’t remember him playing any of the others.

Dave Says:

Here is what it says:

and his best six (6) results from all ATP World Tour 500, ATP World Tour 250, ATP Challenger Tour and Futures tournaments.

So according to this a player could decide to play no 250 events and play five 500 events and the 9th masters 1000 and count it all. Because he is playing 6 total events. So it seems it can be any combination of these events as long as it stays at 6 and no higher.

Daniel Says:

Dave,

You are right. I think they changed the rule. Because I while back they could only have 4 500 and if they played MC irt replace the worst.

But bow I check Thiem’s points for example and he has 5 ATP 500 pts plus MC but no ATP 250. As his worst 500 is the same as his best 250.

He has 4 Slams + 9 masters (with MC) + 5 500. Bit no 250. If he plays another 250 and is better than one of his 500 tgat it will replace it.

In Nadal’s case he has 4 Slams + 9 Masters + 3 ATP 500 and 1 ATO 250 (Brisbane) = 17 total, so he can add another tourney, Basel.

Dave Says:

Ya. I just couldn’t see Nadal messing up on the scheduling. And it says for 2017. So your right, the rules may have been different in prior years. I really do think he plays Basel, Unless he wins in Shanghai. I think it’s better to clinch it early and put all of his focus on winning in London for the first time.

Daniel Says:

Right now Fed has 7.505 pts. The max he can reache if he wins shangai and all the rest is 11.505 pts.

Nadal has 9.865 pts so he needs 1.640 more (already have 360 this week.

But if he wins Shangai that bencarck drop to 11.105 as the masximum Fed can get. Nadal would habe 10.865, needing just 250 more. Basically race over.

Fed is in a good spot now, specially with delPo injury, some
Think there won’t even be second semis tomorrow.

J-Kath Says:

Someone said Annabelle Croft favours Nadal over Federer!!!! – I wonder where that came from – she’s as close and supportive of Fed. as she possibly can without earning a clout from Mrs. Fed.

t4t Says:

Bullow @ 1:57pm:
Remember you posted that I lack comprehension skills? You were worried that I might miss your insulting post so you told me on the active thread that you had left a post for me on another thread. Looks like it does matter to you that I should read your insulting posts but the bully (posing as a victim) is upset when I read her confused posts. You cannot dictate to me what I should read or not read.

t4t Says:

JK Is there any commentator who does not favor Fed? Also if the ATP poll is to be believed, he is the favorite of the players too.

t4t Says:

FedExpress @ 10:47 am. Yes , go ahead and produce the USO draw. Not as it actually panned out over which Fed and his lackeys had no control but as it was drawn.
I think my post was too close to the truth hence the obscenity posted by you! Poor Fed fan, it is an open secret that your idol is propped up by lucky(!) draws and favorable scheduling.

Humble Rafa Says:

All I know is players secretly prefer me. They just want to be popular, so they choose the neutral chocolate.

kjb Says:

@t4t

“propped up by lucky(!) draws and favorable scheduling.”

Hahaha, it doesn’t matter what the draw is. Who is going to beat Fed or Nadal when they are in form? No one, except each other and the last 2 times they played on hard court, Fed gave Nadal straight up beatdowns. Take your garbage posts and lack of any tennis knowledge somewhere else.

Wog Boy Says:

” Who is going to beat Fed or Nadal when they are in form? No one, except each other…”

And you call yourself knowledgeable tennis fan?
There is a guy who has beaten them 49 times combined and still has positive h2h against both of them.
Of course if you listen Fedfanatics, 36 years old had health issues every single time in those 23 losses since 2007.
Don’t bother to justify your stupidity and fanaticism, it’s for everyone to see it.

t4t Says:

Fed fans become abusive because they know I speak the truth. Ha ha ha! I can’t get over Fedfans french kissing Fed’s pictures. Maybe lighting incense in front of that shrine? Ha ha ha ROFL!

Wog Boy Says:

t4t
Anyone who saw Rafa’s matches and still says that Rafa was at his best at the beginning of the year, preclay part of the season, is…..well…..you finish the sentence.

Margot Says:

J-Kath @7 am
Thanks for the laugh! So true. You can hear the drool can’t you?
Haven’t watched any tennis since USOpen but have just taken out a sub for TennisTV to watch end of this, Paris and Next Gen.
Talking of which, where the heck are they? Injured every one?
Talking of which, poor, poor JMDP, hope he’s OK. Came down a heck of a smack.

Wog Boy Says:

It’s 3pm in Shanghai and Delpo is still listed to play 8pm match.

J-Kath Says:

Ah Margot: Good to hear from you. Hearing the drool is bad enuf, seeing it is even worse. Alas, JMDP may not be fit enuf to play….had planned to go to O2 for WTF but without Andy and Nole (and Stan) it has kinda lost its lustre. Sigh, sigh, sigh for NEXT GEN.

T4t @ 9.48pm: “Is there any commentator who does not favor Fed?” None who salivate over him in public quite like she does.

Willow Says:

J-Kath , Virginia Wade too ….

kjb Says:

@Wogboy

I was talking about people that are actually playing right now. The statement would have also included the Djoker if he was in the draw. I guess you beleive that Feds 20 year career of excellence is built on lucky draws and favorable scheduling as well. Makes sense.
