The London ATP Finals field became clearer on Tuesday after two of the hopefuls fell. Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey was eliminated from the London hunt after falling in the opening round at the Paris Masters to Serb Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 6-4.

Querrey, who was solidly in position to qualify a month ago, ended the year losing his last three matches and five of his last seven.

Carreno Busta, who made the US Open semifinals, is still alive but hanging on the final berth after falling to Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-1.

Elsewhere, Dominic Thiem got a victory over qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4.

Former champ David Ferrer was upset by Adrian Mannarino. Fernando Verdasco took out Andrey Rublev, qualifier Borna Coric beat Jan-Lennard Struff and Pablo Cuevas knocked out Karen Khachanov.

On Wednesday, Rafael Nadal will lock up the year-end No. 1 ranking if he beats youngster Hyeong Chung.

β€œLet’s see. I need to win a match. But I am here to try my best as in every tournament,” Nadal said. β€œOf course, if that happens, it will be something important for me. But season is not over and this is not the moment to think much about that. I will just try to think about trying to have the right preparation for the tournament and then try to be ready for the first match.”

Alexander Zverev challenges Robin Haase, Julien Benneteau battles Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet faces Grigor Dimitrov.

Also, in a tall-small matchup, John Isner meets Diego Schwartzman.

Kevin Anderson, David Goffin and Juan Martin del Potro are also in action and in the London Race. Anderson, del Potro and Tsonga will all qualify by winning the title.

Humble Rafa Says:

Nevertheless, I still think that the Masters 1000 are the nine biggest tournaments of the calendar.

When a player, whoever he is, misses this appointment, it weakens the credibility of the circuit. I greet all those who make the effort. So some are a little diminished.

- Philosopher Guy Forget

Tennis Stud Says:

Isner vs Schwartzman never played before, it would be interesting to see them next to each other

t4t Says:

Ha ha Isner vs Schawartzman I must see!

Margot Says:

Philosopher Guy Forget? More likely Philosopher Time Forgot.
Schwartz v Isner reminds me of Hewitt playing Karlovic at Wimbledon.
C’mon littlee.

Daniel Says:

Isner will look at Schwartz and think he is one of the muffins in Super Mario Bros to get even bigger. lol

Margot Says:

AM: I see my “darling Sascha” not, just went out to that streakily irritating player Haas!
Bye bye Sascha, am on team Pouille now. Really like his terrific all court game and his calm attitude. Anyone want to join me, plenty of room at the moment?

AndyMira Says:

M!…Yeah!..Good thing u didn’t pick ‘darling Sascha’ this week M…I think his terrific 1st half of the season make him drained mentally & physically…Thiem too…Bout Pouille…ermm…sorry Milady..i’m okay with him but i don’t know why,i’m unable to summon the love potion like i have towards Andy, Sascha,Thiem or Shorty …maybe because he destroyed my Rafa at USO16…Urgh!..that still hurt…

Margot Says:

Lol AM I’m sure us fans hold grudges long, long after our favourites do! Boo hoo I see Shortman got beaten. Seems to have lost his serve in the 3rd and you just can’t do that against Isner.

t4t Says:

Oooh, Nadal cannot hold his serve?

Tennis Stud Says:

Glad that diminutive Schawartzman had a close one with Isner. It gives confidence to other shorter players

FedExpress Says:

Chung has no mental game. Fell like a house of cards.

fred stone Says:

Time violations all day long. Why even have a chair umpire?

Anto Says:

YE #1 assured for Rafa. Vamos Rafa.

RZ Says:

@Margot – I think you mean Haase, who, I agree, is streakily irritating. I have different thoughts about Haas. 😍

j-kath Says:

Gosh – Schwartzman vs. Isner –wow – Schwartz. looks like he’s still not old enuf, grown-up enuf to be out of short pants — and hey voila, that’s exactly what he’s wearing!

Giles Says:

YEAR END NUMBER ONE! VAMOS CHAMP! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

t4t Says:

Nadal is #1. Wow! Wait we should all thank Fed!

Markus Says:

Congratulations to Nadal…and to his fans, too, all of them. Great year, remarkable accomplishment.

Margot Says:

Congratulations to Rafa and all his lovely fans on here especially AM, Willow, OK, squirrel and even Giles…;)
RZ: I know you….ahem…ahem.. admire….ahem… the handsome T. Haas and I would never confuse him with the intensely irritating R. Haase, just couldn’t be bothered to check the spelling.

AndyMira Says:

Thank u so much Markus!

Margot Says:

PS Anderson out and out go his chances for WTF.

AndyMira Says:

Awwwww!…Thank u so much M!!…But Squirrel is a die hard Fedfans…Maybe u can give him congrats when Fed win WTF in London soon M…

RZ Says:

Congrats to Rafa and his fans. Amazing year for him!

Daniel Says:

Congrats Nadal on another #1, now he has 4 tied with Djoko, 1 behind Federer and 2 behind Sampras allt ime record.

His draw looks good in paris also, he may onlt be treaten in semis agaisnt eihter DelPo (hopefully for him to qulify for London) or Dimi. delpo is already 2 breaks up agaisnt Souza, 3-0 and serve.

Also cheering Pouille all the way. I had him in top 10 at beggining of the year top 10 prediciton, so if he wins the title, he will be top 10 and I have a high chance of winning the contest. Murrya and Djoko alreayd spiled everybodys prediction.

Anderson also out and can’t qualify, so DelPo, Tsonga and Pouille are the only ones active with a chance to suprass PCB, assuming Goffin will get the 7th spot.

Giles Says:

AM. β€œ when fed win WTF in London”??

Daniel Says:

DelPo qualifies if he reaches semis, Tsonga doesn’t reach final amnd Poullie doesn’t win title..

Tsonga qualifies if he reaces semis, Delpo loses before semis and Poulli does’t reach semis.

Pouille qualifies if he reaches finals and DelPo and Tosnga doesnΒ΄t reach semis.

PCB qualifies if all the three above doesn’t reach semis.

AndyMira Says:

Hahahaahha….Relax Giles!…I just wanna test the water!…Besides i want to stroke some of Fedfans ego!!hehehe…

AndyMira Says:

Oh!…For M!…Because Rafa won today,i got something for u on Non tennis…Go there please ma’am!!

Margot Says:

OMG sorry squirrel! Congratulations anyway on being such a great contributor to tx.
AM: have left out someone whose an excellent Rafa fan, I know I have :(
Giles: AM was having a tease, I think.

RZ Says:

Thanks for the break down, Daniel! So is it assured that Goffin will qualify?

Margot Says:

A.M: nothing on “October off Topic” ?

Okiegal Says:

Thanks for the congrats Markus, Margot and RZ! I must congratulate Fed fans on his amazing year too…..36 and going strong! The big two have pulled out all of the stops this year…..hopefully it will continue and maybe Andy….Nole…WaWa…..and DP can contribute some great tennis to add to it and mix things up a bit! My hope for 2018 is good health to all of the players…..injuries suck big time!!

Okiegal Says:

@Margot……Are you a wee one per chance??? Lol

chofer Says:

Daniel

You have Poulle in your top 10 and not Delpo? What gives?
Ok, Pouille will reach the top 10. Delpo, I don’t know.
We’ll talk about it if he gets to Dimitrov/Isner first:))

Delpo CAN beat Roger at the superfast TMC (He did it in the past). Pouille, I don’t think so.
Goffin? No way! Rafa? I have my doubts. Zverev? He needs a lights out serve and a bad back from Federer, again. Thiem? You’ve got to be kidding me! Cilic? Not the way he’s playing now. Dimi? Baby Fed shrinks against the actual one. Who else? My outside pick: Tsonga.

So, Delpo AND Tsonga for the TMC!! :))

Humble Rafa Says:

Thanks guys. Lovers and haters, you all motivate me to be the best.

Giles Says:

AM. You are indeed a tease! πŸ˜„

j-kath Says:

Just dawned on me – a win in Rafa’s first match would ensure the no. 1 spot. So, CONGRATULATIONS to his growing no. of fans and to his faithful trio. He will also win Paris – and onwards to London so happy and buoyed up that he’ll win that too.

wilfried Says:

@ Daniel
There is one additional condition for TSonga? because if that condition is not fulfilled, he doesn’t qualify by reaching semis. Goffin needs to lose from Mannarino, because if he wins, he will gain 90 extra points.

Humble Rafa Says:

Besides i want to stroke some of Fedfans ego!!hehehe…

Always funny to see their ego, which according to them and their idol don’t exist.

Margot Says:

OK: No, indeedy, I am Ms Average, 1.63 metres, just in this age of ever increasing tennis Goloiaths, I prefer the Davids.
Chofer: Lucas beat JWT at the last tournament. BTW JWT behaved like a complete idiot. Alas, I feel he has this tendency, whereas Lucas is Monsieur Calm.

chofer Says:

Margot

I couldn’t see that match. I was too busy biting my nails with Fed-Delpo. Anyway, I’ve heard that, but I’m not fond for a popularity contests in tennis. I see Tsonga, Pouille or Delpo worthier players than PCB for the TMC. In every way possible. Idiots or not.

And Tsonga lost. So it’s a battle between Delpo and Pouille to get there. I won’t stand a player with a network name in the field!

Margot Says:

chofer: I think JMDP will get there. He seems on a mission. I keep expecting him to collapse with exhaustion, but no he keeps going and winning.
If he carries on like this and stays healthy I can see him getting a slam before too long.
As for Lucas, only 23 plenty of time ahead.
I like JWT as a matter of fact, in winning form he’s great to watch, but when he’s losing he behaves like a twit.

Daniel Says:

chofer,

I had Pouille at the begginming of the year. He was rising and had some significant wins. DelPo was a huge question mark. Now I think he will end there and Pouille not.

Tsonga lsot and is out, so Goffin only needs to reach QF and he qualifies.

Delpo x Dimi QF should be a cracker, withg the one having to face Nadal for a ptetnail final in semis. Seems one of these 3 will win Paris together with Cilic on the other half who has a path clear for him. For Delpo, beating Grigor and he will be virtually qualified. Hard to see Pouille reaching finals.

chofer Says:

but when he’s losing he behaves like a twit.

LOL. So did Sasha against Delpo in Shangai, but nobody seemed to care. If he were Kyrgios… Sigh.

Ok, Tsonga is suposedly mature now (have you seen his belly?? is he pregnant or what? lol)but he won 3 titles this year. So did Pouille. PBC… what did he win and to whom? Anyone except him. The TMC should get better if either of these two get that spot.

About JMDP. I agree. Either way is step by step. Today, his serve was rock solid. But there are days his serve enters the “junk” mode. It’s his barometer. If he serves above, say,65/70%, he’ll be fine and the rest of his game gains confidence. Today, he even got the luxury to practice his BHDTHL in the last two games against Sousa. He will need it for the rest of the tournament. But the key it’s his serve. Free points are welcome when tired.

Daniel Says:

Tomorrow is a holiday here and I will be able to extend and watch all the main matches in Paris. Cheering for DelPo to make the cut. Grigor and Cilic to go deep as well, so at leats half the qualified players will arrive in London with some momentum, together with Fed (Shangai/ Basel) and Nadal (securing #1) pumped up and confiant.

chofer Says:

Daniel

Your wishes are mine, too. A TMC deserves a competitive field.

About Pouille, I think he has a chance. As much as I respect Rafa, still think indoors makes him vulnerable. At least, I don’t expect a walk in the park for him to win the title. SFs could be tricky. And I think Pouille game-wise has a better chance at him than an eventual F with Cilic, who needs to serve like a possesed to derail Rafa. Anything’s possible. I think Rafa it’s still the favourite, but I have question marks regarding his usual level on indoors HC. We’ll see.

t4t Says:

Margot @ 12:21 pm… Did you mean skeezer who is hawkeye, a diehard Nadal fan on the grandstand?

Okiegal Says:

@Margot…..LOL….πŸ‘ wish πŸ‘ could c for myself…….Yes the wee ones have been fun to watch…..Swartz and Goffin have been lighting it up!!
