Wozniacki Eyes No. 1 Ranking This Week at WTA Auckland; Preview

Until Serena Williams gets ramped-up in 2018, the current tight race at No. 1 will see a few more new faces.


This week in Auckland, Caroline Wozniacki can re-take the No. 1 ranking from Simona Halep and hopping over No. 2 Garbine Muguruza. In her way in New Zealand will be the resurgent Julia Goerges, former champ Aggie Radwanska and returning champion Lauren Davis.

Here is a look at the field:

Seeds: Caroline Wozniacki, Julia Goerges, Barbora Strycova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Lauren Davis, Yulia Putintseva, Mona Barthel, Donna Vekic

Floaters: Varvara Lepchenko, Sara Errani, Kirsten Flipkens, Monica Puig

Notes:┬áNo byes in the draw and some tough starts for the seeds, including (2) Goerges vs. the Olympics winner Puig, (7) Barthel vs. Lepchenko who has won 3 of their 5 career encounters, (3) Strycova vs. the former French Open runner-up Errani, and (8) Vekic vs. the crafty Belgian veteran Flipkens…Wildcards were awarded to Errani, the United States’ Sofia Kenin, and New Zealand’s Jade Lewis…The American Davis returns to defend her 2017 title when she beat former world No. 1 junior Ana Konjuh in the final…Former champions in the field are Davis (2017) and Radwanska (2013).

GS title are a different league. The Beauty belongs to the lower tier, milking money off her beauty. GS title is just too much work.
