Top-seeded Elina Svitolina successfully defended her Dubai title from last year on Saturday and continued to keep herself in the No. 1 conversation for 2018. She captured her second title of the year with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against unseeded Daria Kasatkina for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships trophy.

It was the first time Svitolina successfully defended a title since the small WTA Baku event in 2013-14.

“Coming here I didn’t have any expectations and here I am holding this trophy again,” the Ukrainian said.

The 23-year-old elicited 34 errors from her opponent, and bageling the 20-year-old Kasatkina in the second set after the Russian tried to up her aggression level and go for broke.

Kasatkina looked to be feeling the effects of a long three-set semifinal upset of No. 2 seed Garbine Muguruza a day earlier, compiled by another three-setter earlier in the week.

It was Svitolina’s second title of the year after Brisbane last month. She improved to an impressive 11-2 in career championship matches.

Kasatkina fell to 1-2 in career finals, and was looking for her first tournament win since Charleston of last year. She was also the 2017 runner-up at Moscow.
