Juan Martin del Potro ran his record to 4-0 against Dominic Thiem taming the Austrian 6-2, 7-6(7).

In a rematch of the US Open epic, Del Potro raced out to a quick break in the first set. He earned another break early in the second but the Argentine failed to close it out serving at 5-4.

Thiem pushed for the breaker, and led 6-4 and again had set point with Del Potro serving 6-7. But a pair of aces put Del Potro ahead and a double fault – like he did in New York on match point – sealed the win for Del Potro.

Del Potro moves on to face top seed Alexander Zverev who rolled past Ryan Harrison.

Del Potro leads Zverev 1-0 beating the German in three sets last fall in Shanghai. Zverev is seeking his first title since Canada.

In the other semifinal, surprising American Jared Donaldson battles US Open runner-up Kevin Anderson. Donaldson took the semifinal spot that was to be Rafael Nadal’s, but beat his countryman Feliciano Lopez. En route to his first ATP level semi, Donaldson lost just two points total on serve against Lopez.

“It’s a great start to the tournament so far,” Donaldson said. “I feel like I’ve played really well throughout the week, and I think it has showed a great maturity to my game and how much I’ve improved.”

Neither player has lost a set.

In the women’s semifinals, Stefanie Voegele meets Rebecca Peterson while in other it’s Daria Gavrilova against Lusia Tsurenko.

42 Comments for Del Potro Stays Perfect Against Thiem, Meets Zverev In Acapulco SFs

RZ Says:

Sadly I don’t think Thiem will win a match against DelPo any time soon. That US Open loss, and yesterday’s loss when he should have at least taken it to the 3rd set – has got to a have a mental toll on Thiem.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Great to see Del Potro confirming he belongs in the top 5. He could have a really big year.

Daniel Says:

DelPo improving his ranking and winning will make him one of the favorites for a good clay seaons. He likes the dirt and with Wawa out, Murray and Djoko recovering and Nadal still a question mark. He can have a very successfull clay seaosn together with Thiem and Zverev. And Nadal of course.

Daniel Says:

Damm, Injury bug is on the loose.

If Fed loses in IW before Semis, Nadal will be back to #1 even without playing IW or Mimai, so Federer needs to reach at least semis in IW to keep #1 ranking.

And if he loses in QF or erlier he will have to reachj finals at least in Miami to get it back before clay.

So, Nadal can be #1 even without hitting a ball with just 1 tournament played in 2018 if Fed bombs in one of IW or Miami.

removing IW/Miami poins:
Fed: 10060 – 2000 = 8060 pts
Nadal: 9460 – 780 = 8680 pts

So, Federer needs to win at least 630 pts in IW and Miami to retain his #1 entering clay: 2 semis; or a final and a second round or beyond, at least. One title and he secures it with cushion.

Daniel Says:

Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka out with injury. Raonic not the same, Kei still recovering form.

That leaves Cilic, DelPo, Dimi, Zverev, Thiem and young guns to challenge Federer.

skeezer Says:

Daniel,
Agree about Delpo, his chances for a big year are looking better and better….

Humble Rafa Says:

Dear Ranking Daniel,

Will I be number 1 after I retire? You seem to an expert on these things.

skeezer Says:

Hola Humble Rafa, Thank you for following. My biggest fan.

Giles Says:

Geez. They’re dropping like flies.
Give fed a walkover! Lol

Daniel Says:

No Humble Rafa, you will be #2, where you spent most of your career and where you belong, it suit you! Not bad for a supposed one surface wonder;-)

LOL, you asked for it.

Willow Says:

Not really a fan, although im probably in a minority here saying that, but its great to see Delpo living upto the top 10 ranking again, dont see him as a GS contender, but hes good for the odd upset against the top players, on a good day ….

Willow Says:

Daniel the thing is HR is so thick skinned i doubt he really even cares what your saying lol ….

AndyMira Says:

Awwww Daniel!…That is a really low blow coming from u!…U know HR is a Faker…But when u said something hurtful like that…U took a dig to the REAL Rafa & us Rafans…It really hurt u know…And the REAL Rafa don’t deserve that…

I always liked reading your post Daniel…U r so knowledgeable & very smart…Don’t let HR changing u…U’re already perfect Daniel..

Humble Rafa Says:

LOL, you asked for it.

Did you say something? It’s incomprehensible. Looks like you are numbers guy who cannot express anything in words.

23-15

That’s all you need to know.

skeezer Says:

Daniel,

Keep posting numbers, especially when it is just the one number EVERYONE respects.

#1.

👍

RZ Says:

Hahaha Daniel.
With Nadal now out of Miami to, your math on the number one ranking gets a bit easier

Okiegal Says:

My favorite number is 38! Rafa 23- Roger 15=GOAT owner!! VAMOS!!! 💪💪

Daniel Says:

Sorry Andy Mira, I couldn’t help it, the devil within;-) But indeed it was harsh on Nadal and fans, my apologies.

RZ,

It would be kind of funny if Nadal gets #1 after IW if Fed loses before semis when he is sidelined. And Fed can than get it back in Miami.

As I mention early season, the ranking can keep going back and forward between them. But if Fed defends IW than he can stay #1 for a long time, throughout the clay season until end of Wimbledon, as Nadal can only add points in Rome. And Fed will only lose significant points in Wimbledon. If Fed plays clay than he can increase the lead

I hope Fed wins either one of IW/Miami and somebody else wins the other. DelPo hasn’t won a Masters yet and I think he deserves one. Winning Miami would be great for him and fans, huge Argentinean crowd there.

AndyMira Says:

That’s okay Daniel!…No problem!…Like i said,i really love your number’s & math in your post..Keep doing it!That’s your trademark..If HR want to tease u bcoz of that…let him be!..He’s the teaser after all…But don’t ever be mean..just leave it to Skeeze…You’re special coz you’re still ‘pure’..

AndyMira Says:

Woohohohoho!….Miss Okie throw gasoline in the fire!I wonder where the guts came from??Hahahaha….

Okiegal Says:

I have to take up for my guy once in awhile!! He’s such a sweet humble person……..

Okiegal Says:

Not for me…..38 is the real number, no? Heads to head….Rafa 23-Roger 15……..Rafa …..GOAT OWNER…….I repeat!!
@Mira…..More gasoline on the fire…..🔥🔥🔥🔥. LOL 😝😝😝

AndyMira Says:

Miss Okie!!….Hehehehe….Dear God!…i think what we’re talkin’ about before u went to the ball game gave u an inspiration ma’am!!Hehehehe…

Okiegal Says:

Lol……. Girl you so crezzy……….🤪🤪🤪

AndyMira Says:

Hahahahahahehehehehe…..Yeehaa!!

Oh!Btw Miss Jan!…We’ve got a new 2nd class Rafan in Suzi!….YAAYYYYYY!!…Now,we’ve got 2…JK & Suzi..

j-kath Says:

Willow: re. Del Potro – I’m also in the minority.

AndyMira – delighted to be in the same category as Suki.

PS: Re. HR – I continue to wonder if he has a co-writer – his comments and writing style have changed over the last few weeks. My imagination or not?

AndyMira Says:

JK…Yess!!….You’re awesome!!..Wait for my Big Boss welcome u heartily okay?

Okiegal Says:

@Suzi…….Hey girl……. TX Rafa fans love 2nd class Rafa fans! I’m a 2nd class Andy fan…..and he’s injured too….. can’t seem to get all of my eggs in one basket! Happy you like Rafa……..makes me smile!

Okiegal Says:

@JK……,I have really been happy that you have been supportive of Rafa, as I appreciate you as a fan of tennis that you can pick another player when your fave is down and out. Now my two faves are out……what’s a girl to do?

Margot Says:

Okiegal: Just become a tennis tart like me….as in Go Pouille….;) Go Chung! Go Tiafoe! Go Thiem! Go Sacha! Go Shap! etc etc

Markus Says:

I may sound obsequious but Okiegal is always first class regardless of who she cheers for. Maybe a bit more lively for Nadal but lovely still for everybody else.

The field in most tournaments has lately been so depleted of big names that the NextGen players are starting to get more visible and gaining more playing time and confidence (except for A Zverev who seems to have jumped straight into the lost generation).

j-kath Says:

To A-M’s Big Boss – am happy that you’re happy. On the question of “what’s a girl to do”? No need for me to reply – Margot’s eyes gleamed and her mouth spat out the perfect answer.

Okiegal Says:

@JK……Yes Margot loves them all! She always comes up with the perfect answer and she also makes me smile…… the witty little tart!

@Margot…….no Rafa???? Lol

@Markus…….Thank you for the sweet compliment…… my being lively and lovely! I got a big old grin on my face when I read that for sure! I’m gonna have to consult Daniel Webster for that big word you used…..obsequious……but that’s good for me, never too old to learn!

To all TXers have a great week-end!!!

skeezer Says:

Meanwhile Delpo > Zverev and into the final of Alcapulco.
Dubai? Anyone care Agut won the title? Okeydokey.

j-kath Says:

Skeezer: Let’s just say “Well done Agut” and leave it at that. (PS: Who is he?)

TalkTennis Says:

Guys : Lets have a life than debating this roger rafa who is the best contest. What both have done is phenomenal. when u r 302 weeks at number 1 and winning 3/5 slams after 35 its a phenomenal acheivement and rafa winning 2/4 slams with decima in FO and No1 in 2017-2018 equally a phenomenal achievement . one cannot have everything . if he did then there is no competition. nothing wrong in being a fan of a certain player but putting one over the other aint good. none of us are getting paid for this and these players dont even care what u say abt them. i love the passion here but lets not get over attached and lose our minds/

Willow Says:

J-Kath lets just say ive never bought into all the hype ….

Margot Says:

I enjoyed the final between Lucas and RBA. Some lovely points were played and it was a thoroughly enjoyable match. I wanted Lucas to win but was not too bothered that RBA did. Lucas was a bit wild at times, but RBA was rock solid. And if I was awake I’d watch JMDP and Zverev too!

Margot Says:

And I’d watch JMDP v Anderson in the final too.

Okiegal Says:

I’m just so glad my cable finally carries the tennis channel as I was trying to watch live streams on my computer…..not a good thing. I plodded through Rafa’s matches on my computer but no others. Now I can watch everyone’s matches….it’s on all night long. My favorite might not be playing but I can still enjoy the beautiful game of tennis……stress free I might add!
