It took until May, but former No. 1 Novak Djokovic picked up his first Top 20 victory of the season beating Kei Nishikori 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round of the Madrid Masters.

“It was strange, I must admit, playing Kei in the first round,” said Djokovic who improved to 12-2 against the Japanese. “Our rankings dropped due to injuries and everything else that was happening the last year. I mean, it can happen and it did happen here.

“I’m glad that match went my way, but it could have gone his way as well. It was a very few points that really decided a winner today. I managed to play the right shots in the important moments. In both first and second set I made breaks, you know, to win both sets at the really final stages of both sets.”

Djokovic, a 2-time Madrid champion, had lost his last two matches entering the affair. The Serb will have the day off Tuesday before returning to face Daniil Medvedev or Kyle Edmund.

Among the other notable winners were Milos Raonic who eased past qualifier Nicolas Kicker and Gael Monfils who was also a winner over a qualifier in Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Tuesday sees action from Juan Martin del Potro, Fernando Verdasco and Milos Raonic who meets Grigor Dimitrov in the match of the day.

Humble Rafa Says:

Beating an injured, confused and recovering Asia Man is considered a good win these days. You know, I beat Timmy Boy 6-0 and 6-2. I gave myself a 6 out of 10 for that performance.

What’s that picture in the headline of this thread? Is it little Nippon wrestling with Nole? I think little Nippon has won that battle! He put Nole into submission! I want a recount!

chofer Says:

Maybe I was on sleeping pills too many, but… Isn’t Novak too thin or what? I realised that today, I don’t know why. But like, TOO MUCH!

A djoker poster somewhere shouted: Get on your fat proteins, Skeletor!

That’s funny.

Django Says:

Well, he is thin. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no eggs,no gluten, no sugar, no caffeine, no booze.

He has peace, do you?

Van Persie Says:

Very impressed of Carla today. Her BH reminds me of Wawa a bit.
She looks pretty with longer hair..

She wins while I write this.
Well done, Navarro

Van Persie Says:

If Kvitova is the greatest lady for me on tour, Carla is the nicest

gonzalowski Says:

VP, yes she always seemed to me like a very nice girl.
And in his photos smiling (see twitter), quite pretty :)

Humble Rafa Says:

Xisca is nicest, greatest and bestest.

Van Persie Says:

Yep Gonza,

She’s very decent also.
Would be something, if she wins Madrid this year. Hope she has some more energy in the tank.
Was the greatest match from what I’ve seen at this tournament so far. Svito was also great.

Van Persie Says:

HR,

I meant the women tennis association, not wifes tennis a…;)

Van Persie Says:

^ apologize, she’s not a wife yet

Daniel Says:

Dimi out to Raonic. At least its good for Raonic to get a top 10 win again.

Madrid altitude already favoring some big hitters and big servers. A lot of clay specialist already out: PCB, Schwartz, Tsisitpas, Fogninin, Mannarino.

gonzalowski Says:

Chung and Dimi, out of Nole’s way… ayayay I’d prefer not to see Nole in the final against Rafa

chofer Says:

Gonza

Fear of the Sleeping Giant? He, he.

Well, I don’t think he’s ready to handle Rafa, tbh. But I support this feeling, 100% here: http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2018/05/del-potro-hoping-see-djokovic-back-top-his-game/73739/
