Wimbledon Seedings: Serena In, Cibulkova Snubbed; Federer, Nadal 1, 2

While the Wimbledon committee once again adhered to their men’s formula for seeding purposes, which takes into account grass results over the last two years, the women’s seedings were so easy. In the past, the tournament has followed the WTA rankings, but this year with mounting pressure for events to provide special seedings for players returning from pregnancy, Serena Williams was awarded the 25th seed.

With the 183rd-ranked Serena included among the 32 seeds, someone had to get bumped, and that was 2-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist Dominika Cibulkova.

“I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” Cibulkova said to the BBC before the seedings were released. “I think it’s just not fair. I have tried and I should be seeded. If they put her in front of me then I will lose my spot that I am supposed to have.”

Serena, who could face Cibulkova in the first round, is seeded to meet a Top 8 seed in the third round.

Defending champion and 8-time winner Roger Federer returns as the top seed for a 7th time. Rafael Nadal, who did not play a grass tune-up is second, followed by Queen’s champion and 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic.

Both draws will be made 5am ET Friday.

Sivaji Says:

It was known Nadal will be seeded 2nd.. Meanwhile Nadal won 7-6 7-5 at Hurlinghum warm-up against Ebden.

jalep Says:

Hurlingham appears like quite the place to be. What a historic venue What fun to go hang out with the beautiful people, sip champagne wear my hat and Ray Bans. Boodles too — same thing but not as classic as Hurlingham, I’d guess.

I love watching Eastbourne too with the sights and sounds of seagulls bombing the pictures. So nice to be on grass for awhile :D

Andy is about where I expected he’d be. Actually I guessed Stan would be a bit ahead of Andy’s progression because he’d had more match play –wrong! Andy exceeded my expectations but lost to Kyle, who has built up confidence and improved a lot this year.

Nice to think about how well Novak and Andy could be playing by the time Toronto comes around. I don’t like seeing Novak lose to Cilic. And really didn’t like seeing Andy lose to Kyle. But when RZ posts a link to the Wimbledon tournytopia bracket I will try to make it in this time.

WTA is so much more fun 🤗 though.

Guessing this might be Cilic’s chance to win Wimbledon. Of course I never count out Fed and Rafa in any GS. But if I had my wish, Delpo would win Wimbledon this year. And Petra Kvitova win it again.

jalep Says:

Oh hello AM, nice to read you here! hehehehehe…is that the link you were attempting to post on TG earlier? Did it finally go through on TG? I supposed to be asleep and have not gone back to read TG.

jalep Says:

Thanks AM. Glad Ostapenko didn’t mope around after her early exit at FO. I didn’t think she’d come close to her surprise performance last year. So, okay TG doesn’t like taking the TennisWorld link. TG took the Daily Mail link that you posted about Katie Boulter, though.

Ostapenko looked good beating Dr. Buzz. Happy she made the Eastbourne quarterfinals. And it sounds like she’s hopeful on grass. Beating Buzz had to give her confidence. But she better finish off Aga in 2 sets – Aga gets tricky to beat when going the distance. Aga is so calm, patient and experienced, as we saw when Aga beat Daria Gavrilova. Aga had no business winning that match but… that’s what Aga does!

j-kath Says:

Jalep: Liked your post @12.38pm.

AndyMira Says:

j!…U can’t believe what i’ve been through today!!…UNBELIEVABLE!!
Thrice i tried to give u an articles!…But all of them failed!!…I copied & pasted,i wrote a post that contained some of that articles..and lastly,i wrote a few lines & just give names of the Top 10 grass court players….All of them didn’t get through!…What’s wrong??

AndyMira Says:

And NO!…That is not the only link i tried to give u j!…There’s 2 from WTAtennis..1 of them give a list of Top 10 grass court players that have a rate success on grass more than any other players on Tour…Mugu,Serena,venus,Konta,Kerber,Coco,Rybarikova,Karo,Petra,Aga..

About TennisWorld…j!…I gave it to Nny hundreds of it in the past years..And never had problems…This is the 1st time i encountered such trouble j!…

AndyMira Says:

Also this one j!…If she get through to main draw,we should pay attention to her…She maybe will do damage in her 1st Rd match…But of coz depends on who her opponents is too….

http://sport360.com/video/tennis/290614/marta-kostyuk-back-from-brink-to-win-wimbledon-qualifying-epic-against-kristie-ahn

See her back flip?Hahaha…Awesome!!…But look like her thigh is full of strapping…

Willow Says:

Fantastic post from Jalep 12.38 am agree with J-Kath really made me smile ;-)

Willow Says:

Cibulkova has a valid point ….

Willow Says:

Some fantastic matches in prospect to look forward to, Aga and Penko, Woz and Barty ….

jalep Says:

Well thanks Willow and JK. I worked hard on that post to make sure much of my nonsense was edited out.

And now up early to see what’s happening live WTA in Eastbourne. Right now Aryna Sabalenka is doing her best to brutalize Karolina Pliskova.

Aryna Sabalenka is all youthful unleashed power. She hits the ball so hard and deep that even Ostapenko would appear subtle in comparison. Also can’t sustain the level without collecting lots of UE’s.

It’s every bit as interesting a match as expected. Aryna is a very loud and expressive, came out guns blazing and won the first set. Karo had never played her before, lol and Karo calmly weathered the storm. Now they are in the 2nd set and Pliskova wins the 2nd set 6-2. Well see what the 3rd set brings. Maybe Sabalenka can get some of that first set energy and level back. Or maybe Karo can outsmart and outlast her young opponent.

Watch out for Sabalenka, Andi Mira! She could win a couple of rounds and do some damage to a seed or two who have yet to play her :D

That’s just odd that you can’t post the links you mention on TG. And I certainly appreciate you trying and posting. Thanks.

About 15 year old Kostyuk! She will be lucky to get past experienced Sara Sorribes Tormo. If she loses I hope she gets a LL spot. The young Ukrainian player has had some tough qualifying matches already. She was so brilliant at AO but they gave her a WC, iirc. So she didn’t have to fight her way through qualies. Marta didn’t make it into the main draw in FO, did she? Best of luck to her – I do like her very much!

I will post more later on TG WTA page. Keep trying to post those links! I see Aga made it past Ostapenko to Eastbourne SF (will have to watch that one!). Chat later AM.

Willow Says:

Jalep your a very clever and knowledgeable lady, your posts are great to read ;-)

jalep Says:

Oh and yes, Willow, I do agree that Cibulkova has a point. But that’s a whole different story, isn’t it. I’m sure opinions vary widely on that one.

Willow Says:

Absolutely Jalep yeah ….

j-kath Says:

Oh my – Kyle Edmunds on verge of going out.

Margot Says:

Angie and Daria locked in battle. Daria is brilliant. A future slam winner, I’d say. Lots of very exciting young women coming through. Good to see Aga winning again.

Margot Says:

Oh and love Ashley Barty BTW. Such variety and power in her game. Bizarre tho., in first set 4 all, playing grand, on comes coach, plays awful, loses set. 2nd set getting her form back, on comes coach, she loses second set. “Teachers leave them kids alone.”

RZ Says:

Hi all, I will try to post a link to the bracket up as soon as possible (draw is out on June 29, and then the Tourneytopia bracket game will follow), but might not be able to get to it until late Saturday. Tournament starts on Monday so if you plan on participating in the bracket, please make sure you get your picks in on Sunday.

RZ Says:

J-Kath, thanks for the link. Maybe there should be a bracket on whether Andy decides to play. :-)

j-kath Says:

RZ: Tomorrow morning is apparently Andy’s deadline – was he unwittingly responsible for Kyle’s loss today?

Margot Says:

4K didn’t qualify. Nor did Atomic. Both struggling to come back after injuries. Shame in both cases. Yeah, I know Bernie is a twerp but a talented twerp none the less. Of course Cibilkova must be extremely annoyed, but I don’t think someone of Serena’s stature could be unseeded. It’s still quite low, so if she’s OKish she could cause havoc in the first week! EEEEEEK!

Willow Says:

Federer to play Dusan Lajovic, Novak to play Tennys Sandgren, Murray to play Beniot Paire first round, nothing about Rafa as yet ….

Willow Says:

Rafa to play Dudi Sela ….

j-kath Says:

If Andy does play (he could still pull out) and makes it to round 3, he’s likely to meet Del Potro….ahem!

gonzalowski Says:

it doesn’t seem like a very bad draw for Rafa… Pospisil could beat him on 2nd anyway

Rafa: Dudi Sela
and could play 2nd Pospisil
4th Schwartzman
qf Andy
SF Nole
F Cilic 😄

willow good luck for England on World cup, looks like a good team! not easy against Colombia

Willow Says:

Thanks Gonzo agree on Rafa, and about England, no team has really stood out in the WC, so i think its wide open for any of the teams left to win it lol ….

Angel Says:

Mischa Zverev in the 3rd round for Rafa could be dangerous

AndyMira Says:

IMO,on grass everybody is dangerous for Rafa..from 1st to 4th at least…

Willow Says:

Rafa will do as he always does, and thats take it one step at a time, and as a fan im doing exactly the same, and trying to stay positive, with no expectations ….

gonzalowski Says:

yes Angel AM and Willow, agree with you

AndyMira Says:

Willow….Definitely!…

Gonza…Yeaahh!!…Btw..I wish u all the luck when Spain were to meet with Russia tomorrow!

Also wanna congratulate Willow & other England supporters for reaching last 16…England is my personal fav..and hope they will go far this campaign!

Willow Says:

Thanks AndiMira XX ;-)

AndyMira Says:

Oh!..Thanks JK!

gonzalowski Says:

thanks AndyMira! they not playing so great, but…

gonzalowski Says:

live on Hurlinghamtennis the end of Rafa’s match against Pouille; he lost 7-6- the 1st set

gonzalowski Says:

so 7-6, 7-5 uf it seemed to me that Fed or Cilic would win easy this Rafa, but well …
I didn’t know that Pouille was so young, 24 years old.

Giles Says:

Gonza. Lol. Steady on. It’s only an exo!!

j-kath Says:

This is Rafa’s 1st grass practise – as Giles indicates – useful only to re-introduce Rafa to grass…..

jalep Says:

Ladies and Gentlemen for your pure enjoyment I give you Wimbledon Tournytopia WTA bracket to join and everyone gets to submit up to 4 entries. So if you are not sure Petra Kvitova or Serena Williams will win you and pick up to 4 brackets and have 4 different winners! 🤗

https://www.tourneytopia.com/RacquetBracketWimbledonWTA/jalep2018/default.aspx

Sorry I missed a couple tournytopia brackets this year.

AndyMira Says:

Thank u for setting up WTA bracket jalep…Really appreciate it…

jalep Says:

Well, you are very welcome Andy Mira. I hope you will put 4 brackets in there!!

But I did my TDC ones first –just one WTA and ATP for TDC brackets

Tourneytopia…..I’m so insecure about picking ATP right now — I need to do a bracket for Rafa, Fed, Delpo, Novak, maybe even Murray going deep…..shoot! It’s confusing.

jalep Says:

Hey AM, are you going to be bracket picking for WTA this morning —evening my time. I’m using tonight to pick WTA. If you want to chat WTA picks come over to WTA page on TG, Okay? Please, if possible?

AndyMira Says:

Errr….No..Not 4 Bracket j…Just 2…I’m sucks atm!…My ATP Eastbourne is worse in the history of the Bracket!…I won’t allow anyone laugh at me for the 2nd time j!…

And my cow also confirmed her participation…So,that’s good…

I just done WTA/ATP for TDC…And i can feel my a@# will get kick pretty hard once again by everyone!…Urgh!..

AndyMira Says:

j 9:44pm…Oh!..Sure thing j!…Anytime!!

AndyMira Says:

Hey j!…Once again my post can’t get through to WTA page on TG…Don’t know why??I guess we have to discuss our picks here…If u want that is….

jalep Says:

Hey there, okay! I’ll go post my first round picks there – WTA page.

Willow Says:

Both brackets done, thanks RZ and Jalep for setting this all up ….
