Novak Djokovic opened his bid for a fourth Shanghai Masters title with a 6-3, 7-5 victory Tuesday over Jeremy Chardy.

The US Open champion has now won all 12 matches against the Frenchman, and has taken his last 14 matches and 23 of his last 24.

“I think I’m completely different player than I was in first, five, six months of the year,” Djokovic said of his 6-6 start to the year. “Hopefully the outcome can be different, as well.

“I’m very grateful to play on a high level. I think that I’m very close to my best, you know, and ‘best’ changes day to day. I can always strive to be the best I can be on that given day. Today’s performance was pretty close to that.”

Djokovic, who is also trying to chase down Rafael Nadal this fall for the No. 1 ranking, will next meet either Marco Cecchinato or Hyeon Chung, two players who beat the Serb this year in Grand Slam play.

While Djokovic was a winner, 2017 semifinalist and No. 5 seed Marin Cilic fell upset to Chilean Nicolas Jarry 2-6, 7-6(6), 7-5. The Croatian served for the match in the second and had a total of two match points in the second. He also served for the match in the third at 5-4.

No. 6 seed Dominic Thiem also crashed out falling to Matt Ebden 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-6(4) who saved two match points. The Austrian falls to just 2-4 at the Shanghai event.

After his win over Stan Wawrinka, Borna Coric rolled into the third round beating American qualifier Bradley Klahn.

Weekend winners Nikolaz Basilishvili and Daniil Medvedev stayed hot. Tokyo champ Basilishvili ousted Denis Shapovalov and Medvedev, who won Beijing, needed a final set breaker to beat home wildcard Zhang Ze.

Medvedev now will face Roger Federer on Wednesday while Basilashvili battles Alexander Zverev. Also tomorrow, Juan Martin del Potro faces Richard Gasquet and Kei Nishikori is also on court.

“I like this part of the season,” said the defending champion Federer. “It’s always been a good [swing] for me. Maybe conditions get faster, I’m not sure… It’s helpful I have a home tournament and the ATP Finals. I have been very successful, so clearly I hope for something similar again this year.”

FedExpress Says:

Fed broken back after being 40-15 up. Never change Federer.

How many times did this happen already this year?

FedExpress Says:

Fed breaks with the help of Medvedev. Will serve for the set.

Fed’s FH has lost so much pop. Not that speed and accuracy anymore. More of an approach shot nowadays.

FedExpress Says:

First set Fed.

FedExpress Says:

Fed plays the ball back at the to net to the opponent more often than not.

FedExpress Says:

WHAT A POINT. WHAT A VOLLEY BY MED.

Daniel Says:

Fed started good than a bit uneven. Maybe first match back, but he needs to up his game to not go out 2nd round. He needs match practice at this point.

FedExpress Says:

Third set. 80 mins played. Fed already tired.

FedExpress Says:

How can you drop the form of 2017 so drastically?

FedExpress Says:

Open court. But Roger says “No sir” I will play it back to Med

FedExpress Says:

Clutch volley to avoid BP

FedExpress Says:

Federer just loves self inflicted pain.

FedExpress Says:

Age is catching up it seems.

Daniel Says:

Yeah, Fed break for 5-4 lead and will serve for the match. Hope he puts 1st serves in, because last game he missed a lot and went to deuce.

FedExpress Says:

Daniel, dont count a rebreak out. Federer serving for something isnt the safest thing in the world.
Cilic only tops that.

FedExpress Says:

A victory in the end but far from convincing

FedExpress Says:

If the draw pends out as it is

Agut first, Nishi in the quarters, Delpo in the semis and Nole in the finals.

chofer Says:

Delpo has a cold virus since last week, He played the final of Beijing fighting fever. I don’t understand why people who manages sites like these are so poorly informed about the players conditions. I don’t know why he has not retired yet, also. I supossed he’sm planning to rest before Basel and that he wouldn’t like to concede the points he has to defend here. But it’s a double-edge sword. That surely changes the luck the draw isn’t it?

FedExpress Says:

As long as Delpo is in the draw he is dangerous.

Given the above, Andy M. is already involved in his “retirement” plans i.e. helping young sports men and women…good for him, but hope to see him successfully return to competitive tennis for a couple of years before his retirement….due to play end Dec. 2018.
