Germany’s Julia Goerges leads the field but former No. 1 Garbine Muguruza is right behind her this coming week in Luxembourg, where unseeded Carina Witthoeft will be challenged to defend her title from 2017.

BGL BNP PARIBAS LUXEMBOURG OPEN
LUXEMBOURG; surface: hard

Seeds: Julia Goerges, Garbine Muguruza, Carla Suarez Navarro, Camila Giorgi, Katerina Siniakova, Donna Vekic, Maria Sakkari, Pauline Parmentier

Floaters: Margarita Gasparyan

Notes:

Not a lot of talent in the field outside the seeds, but watch for (7) Sakkari starting against the red-hot comeback player Gasparyan…

Wildcards went to Muguruza, France’s Fiona Ferro and Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella…

Gasparyan got into the main draw with a protected ranking, and this past weekend’s teen Hong Kong winner Dayana Yastremska got in with a special exempt…

The slew of talent withdrawing from the tournament was former No. 1s Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams, Sorana Cirstea, Polona Hercog, Rebecca Peterson, Monica Puig and Tamara Zidansek…

German Carina Witthoeft defeated Monica Puig in last year’s final…

Former champs in the field are Witthoeft (2017) and Monica Niculescu (2016).
