Day two of the WTA Finals held this year in Guadalajara saw two mild upsets.

Maria Sakkari continued her mastery over Iga Swiatek topping the former French Open champion for a third straight time with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

“I think it was a very solid match from my side,” said Sakkari who is now 6-0 in sets against Swiatek. “Obviously my serve really helped my game. I felt quite good with the altitude. I could control my shots pretty well. I think every day I’ll feel even better.

“I actually have a good game to play against. All three times I played her, I played one of the best matches of the season. Like even today, I think I was very solid in these conditions

The Greek dropped just one point on her first serve while Swiatek was plagued by double faults.

Paula Badosa won her 7th straight match stunning the tournament favorite Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-0.

Badosa, who just won Indian Wells last month, took the last ten games of the match incredible fashion from 4-2 down in the first set.

“I said to myself, ‘OK, now you have to be as her level, aggressive, because she was being very aggressive.’ I wanted to play against her,” Badosa said of her comeback. “Let’s see how it goes. Even though maybe it could go well, it could go bad. That’s what I did. I said, Now you have to change, stop waiting for her miss and go for it. That’s what I did.”

Badosa will now meet Sakkari on Saturday while Swiatek and Sabalenka meet in a virtual elimination match.

Today, the red-hot Anett Kontaveit goes up against Karolina Pliskova in the Teotihuacan group. The Estonian is 27-2 in her last 29 matches but 0-3 against Pliskova.

Wednesday losers and former French winners Barbora Krejcikova and Garbine Muguruza also meet in an evening match.
