The chase for 24 will wait longer. Tennis great Serena Williams officially removed her name from the Australian Open entry list.

“Following the advice of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from this year’s Australian Open. While this is not an easy decision to make I am not where I need to be physically to compete. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit and I look forward to playing at the AO every year. I will miss seeing the fans but I am excited to return and compete at my highest level.”

The 40-year-old who has been stuck at 23 Grand Slam titles — just one shy of Margaret Court’s all-time record — hasn’t played since injuring her leg during Wimbledon last summer.

The 6-time Australian Open champion lost in the Melbourne semifinals last year to Naomi Osaka.

Among the Top 100, also withdrawing was former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.
