Haas Hammers Not Hot Roddick; FSN Tries to Cover Tennis

I didn’t know it but apparently what happens in Dubai, stays in Dubai. Evidence, Andy Roddick, who looked like, no, who was a world beater just a week ago in desert in the Middle East, but found no such form in the desert of California Sunday after getting dismantled by nemesis Tommy Haas 64, 64.

American tennis is on display next week at the mouthful ‘Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and Cellular South Cup’ in Memphis, where Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Sam Querrey are among the seeded players, with land mines galore within the draw.

Well the upcoming US-Russia Davis cup final in December just got a whole lot more interesting.

US Open Previews: It’s Showtime

Whenever the US Open rolls around, my mind starts to reflect on the season that has been, and I think to myself, ‘wow, is it September already?’ Of course there are still three months of tennis to be played after the Open, but in a way, the season comes to a close after the champions […]

Nadal retires, Djokovic flat, but players support back-to-back Masters Series

The ATP Masters Series inducted a new rule in 2007, where the Top 8 seeds received byes for their first round matches. This to make sure that they can get enough rest in between events, to compete in back-to-back Masters Series tournaments. It was a good move by the ATP, but Cincinnati is still suffering […]

Thursday Fish Wrap: 100%

Is anyone still paying attention that there’s a tournament going on in California this week? Some interesting stuff actually transpired in the past few seemingly lackluster days including a thinned out draw; Lindsay Davenport’s official, albeit weird, retirement announcement; and the announcement of an Andre Agassi-Marcelo Rios exo in a few weeks, where Agassi made […]

Suck it up Tommy!

I had to do a double-take Tuesday when scrolling through the Hamburg scores. According to official ATP results, Tommy Haas lost in the first round of Hamburg to Robin Soderling after he retired in the second set due to a pollen allergy. That’s right, a freaking pollen allergy. That is, a runny nose, watery eyes, etc.

Think of all the great heroic efforts in sports: Terrell Owens playing the Super Bowl with a cracked leg, Curt Schilling pitching in the MLB playoffs with a stitched-up, still-bleeding ankle and Willis Reed hobbling in the NBA with a broken leg. Those guys sucked it for themselves, their teams and their fans. That’s sports. The competition. Testing the limits. Going against the odds, but not quitting due to something like an allergy, which affects many of us especially this time of year but we get thru it.
